This signing makes no sense at all. We already have Rose, Hyam, McFadzean, Pask, Drysdale and Williams so central defence is unlikely to be a priority for strengthening. He is not a ball playing defender so doesn't fit into the mould of our team, and hasn't exactly shone in games against us in the last few years. In fact in the 5-4 game he was atrocious. Although admittedly not a 100% reliable guide, Sunderland fans don't rate him either. I think and I hope that there is no more to this story than his agent trying to drum up interest, or negotiate better contract terms at Sunderland.

Yes - we need at least 2 first team ready players at each position. The championship is not the place to have development players as next up on the rank

We've got 4 first team ready CB and two up and coming ones who could fill in from time to time.

Meanwhile we've got 1 LB (when we play WB) and 1 RB. Last season our back-up LB was a 19yo we'd bought from Herne Bay - he went on to have a cracking season and get sold to a PL team. Had we brought in another experienced LB as cover he probably wouldn't have got that opportunity. Really no point bring in a 5th choice experienced CB as cover. If we sign people like that they should be with the intention they will be a starter with the current incumbent fighting for that place.

EDIT: I also forgot Thompson, who has fallen away since his academy days but is still here so that's another CB on the books next year.

After the stick Sunderland fans gave their own players throughout last season, I hope we're not signing ANYONE from the stadium of lol.
Imagine the therapy they'd need.

Flanagan's confidence especially looked shot to bits on STID. Maybe not the best footballer out there but I think his lack of form whilst at Sunderland has more to do with confidence issues than him actually being a poor player.

Agree & also agree with SBD.

He's not a bad player but not better than the 4 first team CBs we already have. Coming in as 5th choice would only stand in the way of developing Williams & Drysdale.
If we bring in another CB he has to be to challenge the current established 3.

I'd say we need another CB to perhaps replace or at least challange McFadz for a starting spot. Great player at L1 level and overall a great leader but whether he'll have the legs for the Championship I'm not too sure.

Flanagan certainly isn't the answer though as I'd suggest L1 is about his level.

Robins has said he has sorted a number of his first choice new recruits, bet there’s none that’s been rumoured on here just like last season (apart from Walsh or O’Hare that is.

Indeed - someone suggested Rob Dickie a couple of weeks ago and whilst I’m sure he will end up at another Championship club, he’s the type of player we should be after at CB.

Should we be adding people in at that kind of level or pushing the development of Williams and Drysdale?

We also still have Jordon Thompson on the books, which I'm quite surprised about to be honest, as I thought he would have been released.

Think it makes more sense to loan those two out to L1 or 2, ideally to a team that’ll use them in a similar way to ourselves. Agree with you that any new CB needs to be pushing the first teamers for a spot.

Being able to loan out to L1 is a nice thing to have I must say

Realised that after and edited. I did think he'd fallen away a lot, which was a shame as he seemed a good prospect in the academy - tall, athletic and quite vocal. I thought his contract was up this season but he's not been released so guess he must have one more year left.

Probably not as I think a fair few will be coming from abroad. Realistically it's the only way we'll be able to afford 'Championship quality' players as even in the current economic climate the market in England still remains horribly inflated.

I'd be surprised if we are going for Flanagan. Seems against the mould of centre back we'd typically go for unless we're changing style. I'd assume the higher we go even more emphasis will be made to find players like McFadzean, Rose and Hyam who are comfortable with the ball at their feet.

I agree which is why I'd be very surprised if there's any truth in the Tom Clarke link too. More likely agents touting imo.

I only count 3 First Team Centre Backs in Rose, McFadz and Hyam who have played any kind of consistency this season? Whose the 4th? Pask?

If so, then we need competition, as Pask is unproven in the "1st team" so I'd back Robins to buy a new CB (Not neccesarily Flanagan).

he is good from the games I saw him in
Bristol Rovers he looked like he had been apart of the defense and played with them all season also against Brum he did pretty good and I think we are fine with defenders all we need is to sign Ohare and Hamer then try for a striker who will score goals for us

And when we signed Rose and Hyam (esp) they were largely untried (certainly at a decent level) and were brought in largely for development. We've not seen much of Pask due to injury but he would've featured a lot more were it not the case. From what we have seen he looks more than capable of challenging for one of those spaces.

Of course we could strt the season and get to injuries in quick succession, which would be unfortunate. But then we've got the loan market for that eventuality. Like we did with Watson at RB last year.

We should either be looking to spend decent money and wages on almost nailed on first teamers or bringing in up-and-coming young people on lower wages to develop. Signing a L1 CB who doesn't look that great but likely on half decent wages to be a back-up would be a total waste.

The Loan market closes at the same time the transfer window does, pask did look good but he’s played what 12 senior games.

at least Flanagan has played championship level has over 150 appearances and also has 5 international appearance - that’s not bad for a 4th choice defender

As I said, we have 3 first team CB's that have played, Pask has not, I'd prefer to sign another CB as competition, fighting with other 1st teamers, Pask may get his chance due to an injury.

Hyam was indeed signed as a development player as Rod Mcdonald and Tom Davies were 1st team, Hyam got and took his chance very well.

Rose was bought to play as he'd been an Ayr regular.

I have no interest in Tom Flanagan, but I trust MR to make the right call.

And the only reason Pask wasn't involved much last season is due to injury. Had he not been injured he'd have featured regularly on the bench and in the cups. MR brought him in as that 1st team competition (admittedly for Dabo but his versatility was also a factor and he's predominantly played CB at WHU), not solely as a development player which he has Williams, Drysdale and Thompson for.
