Got that one, too! Actually bottom outfield player of my Average Ratings, but still did a decent job as cover. Has ideas above his station, though...

What kind of nutter played with Attackers on the left and right?

442 or bust...

Nah man, in the 94 sesaon version (you can tell its that one cos Hurst and Sheridan are at Cov), you want THIS!:

Formation.png

I've tried a lot of other stuff, used to be 4312 or 2512 as a kid and did well, but a mate at Uni introduced me to the "widemanless wonder" formation and I've never not won a league I'm playing in since! It's a bit of a pisser cos full backs can only be used in the Anchor positon (my No.5 there) and wingers only in the Support position (my No.8).

Wegerle was always frustrating as hell when I used to play it, but then we worked out that FRLC's do better in the No.9 in the middle of the game-breaking 3 strikers: stops em wandering around too much!

More to come...

Nice...

I'd say I'd give it a go, but my Commodore 64 got lost in a house move 10-12 years ago :(

which game is this and what can i play it on?! :)
First off you need to get Dosbox, instructions all here: Basic Setup and Installation of DosBox - DOSBoxWiki

Thats got a link to the download I used, there may be newer ones now. There's other guides out there to installing it and getting it working including vids if that helps. I found it a bit fiddly, but I managed to work it out just by doing exactly what it says!

Dosbox basically is an emulator so that you can run crappy old PC games (although I played it on the Amiga at first, this game is entirely identical).

There's 3 versions of the game (not counting Italia and the weird...Norwegian? one!). They're all freeware now, so can be distrubuted to anyone. The original is 93 and the game engine is a bit different; it's great, but the gameplay feels slightly stodgier, I'm not 100% on the best formation and the City squad isn't as good! Then there's the 94 Season Update, which is the one I'm playing (Newcastle in the Prem now; young Robbie Fowler in the DB!). And then there's the mental End of Season Update, which has all the foreigners that got snapped up after the 94 World Cup, Dublin at City and Klinsmann at Spurs.

I've got them all, but if anyone can be bothered to get Dosbox working, I've attached my most recent save as City on day 1, without anything being done. That should include the whole game there, so just drop it into your dosgames folder then follow the instructions online to running it! The way it works, wot with modern PC's being a bit bigger than a Dos era PC or Amiga, you can have literally dozens of backup copies-whereas as a kid it was agony having to start again! So if you want to do a different league with fresh player ratings, just copy and rename the folder in the dosgames folder and Bob's your uncle.

That save starts with nobody at a club, so you can have multiple copies with different teams. The reason that save is so invaluable to a City fan is that I spent literally hours re-starting it until the random skills and, most importantly, Character of players, was decent for those City players that are totally random, which is about half the squad. That has all those randoms with City with the good Character ratings of Confident, Unselfish (loads of them), Responsible, Thoughtful etc: what you don't want in that game is too many Arrogant, Rash, Withdrawn or Selfish players. The likes of Flynn and Boland have some random skills that don't seem right (Boland's even Scottish!) but you just roll with it cos its awesome fun! Flynn's a bit shit but has high hidden Goalscoring too, I think (bagged 15 for me!).

On that City save, I set the rule that I wasn't allowed to sign anyone who didn't actually play for us at any point unless I absolutely had to, and would try to stay as true as possible to the City players of the 92-96 era. My one other signing was Richard Hall from Southampton as we really had no CB's in that DB, just Morgan (DLC and fucking awesome after a season, gets in the England side!), Busst (not much potential but solid enough) and Rennie (see above). You're really screwed over by Atherton being a D/MR and Babb a D/ML, but they're both decent enough in the Anchor position (and Support at a push) and have huge potential-again, pushing for England recognition second season.

It broke my heart, but last time I played the game (despite having the invaluable hidden stat of Goalscoring high), Quinn couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo, and being set as Selfish in character (not great for his team-mates), this time I flogged him this season to Sheff Utd for a tasty 1.6m. Then he did great for them!

I cheated and took Liverpool as a second team, not for nicking the money, but for two key reasons: 1) to move along other players in my squad: when other teams are interested, you bid with your second team to make them bid too. You can over-inflate what you get out of them by bidding more than they're worth (but not unreasonably) and then dropping out in the final round when other teams match it! It takes a bit of getting the hang of but is awesome when it works. "YES, Tranmere want John Gayle, WHOOOOOP!" Yeah its cheating, but given there's no free transfers (IE releasing people you don't want) and a paltry max squad size of 26, sod it!
2) I wanted Nii Lamptey, the best player in the game after a season! There was no chance of getting him as City, but he happily moved to Liverpool, then I shunted him off to Highfield Road at a discount. He took a backwards seat first season as I let Roy and co run riot, but he's gonna destroy teams next year in Europe...

Doing this and with other bids, I sold Gayle, Quinn, Booty, Lee HIrst (awful), Jenkinson (although he might be alright if you gave him a crack!), Detsi Kruszynski, Brian Borrows (sadly too old and can't play central) and Mick Harford (although he's decent enough backup, you just don't need him. Did me a solid in my Stockport save).

With a bit of wheeler dealing (IE changing my formation when signing em to have lots of players in the team in their positon, cos thats how it works! You can tell if a player is interested in signing cos their name is yellow on the search screen or shortlist), I managed to bring in Paul Cook for 400k from Wolves (brilliant playmaker), the aforementioned Hall (420k) and Lamptey, a precocious 18 year old Noel Whelan for 180k (has high hidden Goalscoring stat: 24 in 18 games for me so far!!!) and Mike Marsh for a cool million (on the fringes this year, but huge potential).

This is my squad at the end of Season 1:

Won the league with just 2 defeats, away to Man U and Spurs, so I'll take that!

Am desperate to sign Dion next season, maybe look into Filan or Kiely as Oggy replacements year after (although Gould is decent!). Dion won't move though so looks like Froggat from Villa will be the big signing, brilliant AML who isn't playing atm, perfect for the Support position in my formation. I could go after Don Hutchinson, but he's too damn good and it's too long after that we had him...Carlton Palmer would be great as a D/MC but is getting on and won't move to me. Shaw's a LB so doesn't suit the formation. Paul Williams is a MC and has crap skills this time, so don't really want him. Edworthy's Withdrawn in character (yeah, I can see that...) and a decent MRLC starring at lowly Plymouth, so might have a look at him. Adebola will be one to bring in once Wegerle's over the hill maybe.

My awesome Stockport save with Robins, 12m Tony Sheridan and Dele smashing the league up is taken from the same "save" there at the end of the first season-I just simmed it through to the end of Season 1 with no manager, then took over Stockport once they were relegated (listing all their 30+ players at max value and insured so I got that much in money back when they retired to build a new side next season with! A classic cheat).

This page has the Results you have to put in to get past the copywrite protection of the era as it loads: Championship Manager 93/Codes — StrategyWiki, the video game walkthrough and strategy guide wiki

Or you can just put 2-1 until it's right as you would when you had no idea where the manual was-it was right half the time!

Nope, one of the few ancient sports games out there that I haven't worked out how to edit. I think someone had a crack at it "updating" it around the Pressley era, I presume with some kind of hex editing, but it was buggy and they had done sod all research on Ll/L2 teams so I gave up. Plus for me the main attraction is the old players anyway.

Suppose it’s too late now but was more thinking about the time you spent getting the random stats right.

Aha! Yeah would have been lovely, but that's old gaming. I've spent 1,000's of hours editing CM97-98 to perfect realism, but that's still a long-term project. But it's more just the Character in this one, its a huge part of the game. When you get a Rash David Busst he is infamous for the number of OG's he scores! I just got used to the random skills-Steve Morgan with Passing 20? Sean Flynn with Pace 20? OK!
