Walsh had a habit of giving the ball away a lot early on in his spell with us by trying to do too much going forward or in dangerous areas. If Sheaf is similar and we manage to train it out of him in the same way but he's also over 6ft and strong in the tackle he'll be a hell of a footballer.

A few of the decent non shit talking Doncaster fans have said that he didn’t start the season well but developed a lot as it went on and I think that’s down to experience anyway.

We 200% need someone with his physique and challenging ability to win back the ball.

As much as I love Kelly, I would prefer him fall back into a squad player role and he was replaced in the middle in the starting 11... There's no sentiment in football and for me it's a position we need to improve on... A 6ft 1 2 footed ball playing midfielder that can tackle fits that mould, I expect if he signs... Kelly will not be 1st choice much longer

I meant in general but you raise a valid point. I do think given the fee, age and pedigree of the player this one screams first team starter to me though.

I'm also thinking we'll probably have a similar situation to Doyle in that first year back in L1 (which someone referenced earlier). I guess Kelly might be used initially as we acclimatise to the level, keeping a young squad in check, but will ultimately be replaced by a bigger and better machine. Ruthless but necessary.

I just hope he gets off to a good start I can see him being brought in to be a first team starter but also as an alternative as we do have options now that are at a decent quality.

I 200% wouldn’t over O’hare but we’ve not really gave him a chance yet to flourish he could be as good as Allen, his first game was rather all over the place as to be expected. I do think all of the new signings par Hilsner have settled in quite well from what we can see. Every training video I’ve seen Hilsner still seems rather out of place or sort of slow, that beings said I’m not knocking him I’ve just seen Hamer has settled in really well and from the offset has started chemistry building into the line up. In the rangers game Hamer looked like he’d been with the team for months!

I hope the same applies to Sheaf if we do actually sign him as I feel we will need to hit the ground running to really get that ideology of fighting for survival out of the teams heads.

Kelly has been absolutely integral to us since the second half of our League 2 season. He’s coped with the step up in quality whenever required despite many people thinking that he might struggle. Let’s see.

I'd expect it to be more like the 500-700k range of the fees mentioned for Sheaf, but even that is not extorionate for Championship level and seems about right for a good L1 player, unproven in the Championship with some weaknesses but plenty of potential to improve at the right team (which we certainly are-we'd really suit his game I think).

Walsh blossomed with Kelly alongside him. We need to look it at more as a "2 from 3" rotational situation with Kelly, Hamer and Sheaf (if we do sign him, or someone else if we don't bring him in). There were times when we needed to rest Kelly last season when he was exhausted but there was simply nobody else near his quality in that position: he was too essential. That would get exposed at this higher level, but this would right that. We need to remember that Hamer is young, adapting to a new country and also won't play every minute of every game, either, so we need quality in depth. With these three and one of Eccles (if not on loan)/Pask/Shipley/Allen as the 4th choice option DMC rather than 3rd, I'd be much happier.

There's also an element of succession planning here which is great to see: the management team really know how to build a squad and are adapting to doing it a third time at a third different level!

I agree I feel like Kelly’s going to be pinnacle to helping them all develop and is crucial to our lineup. I don’t think I’ve been this excited in years even when we were in the championship as we played dry footy! I honestly think we’ve got a very creative mix and a lot of playmakers now in midfield and if we bring in Sheaf I feel that’ll just strengthen up the gap that’s missing in terms of the strength and winning the ball back and he seems somewhat creative.

I’m just specilating but I feel like the need for a forward may be put on the backburner as we need someone who’s a prolific goal scorer and that’s far out of our financial reach and Godden I feel with the strengthened positions in midfield and creativity will potentially be just force fed the opportunities moreso. I’d love to be proven wrong but I can’t see anyone that we can financially afford that’d want to join us that we could snap up that’d be a decent investment. We could of course be getting a loan player but I feel like it seems we’re trying to actually develop a solid permenent team and thus giving us a financial asset to develop.

I’m praying we do get a reinforcement upfront not that I don’t think Godden is good enough I just question Baka/Maxis adjustment (not saying they can’t either I just think last season we weren’t known for smashing the goal charts and the championship being a step up I feel we need more consistent firepower).

I’d be interested to see a few people sent out on shorts like Jodi so he can gain consistency and prove his capabilities and rework some confidence into him and the other youngsters.

Sheaf looks like he’ll make a good signing, good at tackling and passing. At 22, and zero Championship experience, he’s likely someone who’ll be developed a bit before starting consistently for the first team.

The more I read about him, the more I like this signing.

That's why I was wondering if he's going to keep a similar formation structure as Sheaf has primarily played as a DMC but all of the statistical analysis websites I've been checking actually have him and Kelly's stats pretty equal obviously though Kelly as you've mentioned brings far more to the table so I'm wondering how he'll fit in! Only time will tell I guess!
