Maybe a unpopular opinion but at times last season especially the last half of the season Kelly gave the ball away a lot, he gets the cov fans sentimental protection like shipley does but i have doubts on kelly being good enough for championship level just like doyle couldn't hack it at L1 level. Would personally like Sheaf and Hamer holding next season but Sheaf could very well slot into the back 3 as we have a few injuries. Let's wait and see how it pans out.
Because he was exhausted as he had to play every minute as we had no other DMC's...hence the need to sign a third! I think he looked refreshed in the Rangers game.

People making the Doyle comparison-Kelly is 30: Doyle was 37 when he lost his place in the side!

Benefit of the doubt; during the Rangers game they did mention about the 1 Scotland cap Kelly has, maybe he just misheard?
Mag fancies using Kelly on the wing now Dabo is at cdm
You can't have a team where nearly everyone's 22 and only 2 players are over 25...not at this level. Kelly's experience and leadership is key, he has stepped up every time we have gone up and if we sign Sheaf it is so we have more than Eccles as DMC cover-and we can rotate Kelly/Hamer Sheaf.
agree with this anyone coming in now I feel will be experienced at the level

If a professional footballer got pissed off by people on an online football forum speculating about whether or not new players we were splashing cash on were bought in to play along side him or ultimately as a replacement for him given he was originally bought in as a league two player, then I’d question his attitude and tenacity as a professional.

I don't read it like that at all, players at our level arent superstars they are just normal people who have to fit a life times earning in to ~10 years, some do seek out what people are saying about them on forums. The guy has just won the league as captain I just think that its a bit harsh to assume a 22 yr old is going to walk into his place in the team. if i read that i'd be pissed off.

I just feel its wrong to write people off. Look at players like Fleck. we had him and he was good player but i dont remember people saying he was particularly stand out. after he left he grew and progressed with every promotion with Sheff U.

Sheaf looks a prospect and yeah could be a long term replacement or upgrade but come on if he wasnt an Arsenal youth player would you be so sure he'd walk into the 1st IX?

Fan emotion needs to stay on the terrace.

Footballers have to be adept at change as it comes with the territory...there is very little stability in the game. Having a contract is no guarantee of not being dropped or sold and yesterday’s hero can be tomorrow’s addition to the bomb squad.

IF we get Sheaf, he, along with Kelly ...and every member of the squad will have to earn their shirt.

It’s as simple as that.

Also 'exhausted'... please, a pro athlete should be able to play 2 games a week. He was one of the poorer players of a good side last season, he's not good enough for the championship im afraid sorry if this offends you :(

As mentioned already he was carrying an injury whilst playing cm every game for us. That takes it's toll on anyone. We don't know if he's good enough yet but what we do know is we are short of options. Sheaf adds to our options, and possibly is seen as long term replacement but doesn't mean Kelly is getting bombed out right now.

All due respect, do you even play remotely competitive sport?

By the end of a season, pretty much all players are struggling with little niggly injuries or are starting to feel a little bit jaded compared to the start of the season. It’s a 50+ game season at a v high intensity, not a kick about in a park.

It’s not just games either, there’s gym work, training, travelling and so on. It takes its toll and athletes. Just like everyone else, they need a break from time to time.

Would be a great signing for the multitude of reasons people have suggested. I think he’s a good player with good potential, and there’s definitely legs in the rumour.

Great to see we haven’t abandoned our strategy of signing younger players to develop, and in fact we’ve enhanced it by signing players who already have a good level of experience.

Re Kelly talk - yes he can look slightly ponderous on the ball, but that’s just his style. No way he should be written off, and should at least get a chance in the Championship. He’s a silent leader and his influence is key.

Genuinely not sure if this guys for real or not 😂 lots of players play 50 plus a season and do the gym work and training too believe it or not and still perform for the season. For example dabo whos a wing back and does more running than kelly who anchors didn't start losing form because he was 'exhausted'. I dont like professional athletes hiding behind that, im all for rotation but Kelly isn't good enough on the ball for the championship, nothing to do with him being tired.

I think the players are all off till midweek. Might be the management as well. Could be the hold up.

It’s not hiding behind it. Some players have to be nursed through game by game due to past injuries so they don’t flare up. I think Kelly may have been playing through injections for the latter part of the season because the team couldn’t afford to lose him

Hate this line of thinking. We don’t take old footballers out the back of Ryton and put them down, they’re capable of earning money just like everyone else. Most new teachers leave within ten years, Police computer forensic staff burn out in even less time, I don’t see anyone claiming they should be paid millions.

The idea that footballers should earn enough to retire at 30 is ridiculous TBH. Nothing stopping them going off and being a brickie or a delivery driver for the next 40 years.

Agree with your overall point, just that phrase triggers me.

At least use a good example. Dabo and Rose were carrying injuries before lockdown and are now out until the end of September.

I didn’t take exception to the comment about him not being good enough or not.

Professional athletes are still human, and they get tired and injured like the rest of us. A season takes its toll on you - no matter how fit you are.

Also, he’s very obviously respected by the group of players we have. Doesn’t mean he’s the best player, he’s just important.

DABO......................................................GILES

...................HAMER.............KELLY...................

Pushing for starts: SHIPLEY, JONES, JOBELLO, HILSNER, BAKAYOKO, BIAMOU, DE.COSTA, PASK, MASON

If we sign SHEAF he may well be a starter and biggest threat to KELLY.
I think the jigsaw will be completed when we get another striker, possibly a loanee from a premier league club.
We have goal threat throughout the side as last year. O'Hare, Allen, Shippley all threats and of course Jones. We have options to change it especially useful to us if we keep the 5 sub rules next season.

Think if he get him or the Wolves lad you’re right we can probably do without another CB, though just having Pask and Drysdale as cover for three and question marks over McFadz ability to step up do worry me.

Definitely need a striker though. Even if I do think Baka is going to rip up some trees this season.

Sheaf would be a great buy for now and the future. But Kelly is still our key player and still has years in him.

Kelly is the main reason we stopped sliding down the leagues and started climbing them again.

Young as our midfield is, I still smile when I see O'Hare and Allen's names - nippy little tricksters, who are going to be so important to our attacking play. Getting excited about next season !

OK mate, I see your point but will agree to disagree. My main point was Kelly not being good enougb which is subjective of course. Will have to see what robins goes with! Sheaf hasn't even signed yet either so who knows

Whether Kelly plays or not he certainly needs to up his goals to shots ratio. At whatever level as it's bloody atrocious! I get that he's a DM but must have about 5 shots a game and still only scored 1 in 100+ games

He had 0.9 shots per game last season in league one...

I've seen that site that quotes shots and found it amazing. I pointed it out to those around me midway through the season and not sure how or who counts them as we regularly counted 4 to 5 shots per game most of which rarely troubled the keeper and were tame when they did.
