So i just rewatched the league 2 promotion season (3 Viewers)

Watched YouTube highlights from every game that season in order. Hey hey call me sad whatever I loved it lol

Just some things I noticed

1) Jodi Jones was so good! I knew he had a good season till injury bit I forgot how reliant we were on him to make things happen. Thrtr is a dangerous player in there and I hope we can find a way to see it this season within our box formation somehow. Even if it means one attack mid and 1 winger asymmetrical perhaps

2) the duck! We should remmeber him as a great loan signing. He was also involved in so much of our attack and score goals and few assists in his time here. I think we had near 40pts when he left so he played his part in our promotion for sure. Think that gets forgotten

3) dropped pts. We never bulldozed this league and u til February and that point with q0 men vs Mansfield we dropped many pts and evsn after we had a 3 game winless streak in march april time too. A lesson for this season that it's a marathon not a sprint

4) coping with adversity. After lost Jones and naz on Mcnulty bayliss and Shipley stepped up. I can't stress enough how proud we should be of this season and the team!

5)Kyle Reid. Not a big or conpared to rest but he played quite a bit down the stretch. Coupled with checkatrade assist he can go down as a good signing lol

Anyway was a fun hour and a half. Looking forward to next season more than ever now and also tommrow friebdly to watch Jodi Jones continue his comeback!

We need to get him in the right position on pitch. It's going to be tough tactically but robins must have a plan as he has retained him

Like you say though, huge credit to Shipley and Bayliss for stepping up that season when needed. Was a huge amount of responsibility on such young shoulders and both dealt with it brilliantly.

Can't remember who we played, but Reid had one game where it felt like he was taking on the opposition by himself and battering them in the process. If we had that player more often he'd have been amazing

I think the 6-2 defeat to Yeovil at home Had a big effect.... I.e play like that again and we’re not going anywhere. Although fair to say could have been a freak result maybe... an off day.

For me it was the 4-2 loss to Lincoln where it became do you want this or not?

I think even Robins may struggle predicting how Jones will perform this season. But given the talent he showed during the League Two campaign, the club would've been incredibly naive to not give him a chance this season and offer him a new deal.

Whilst I thought he certainly showed flashes during his brief return from his first ACL injury, I have to admit I personally thought he looked a shadow of his former self and almost seemed frightened to be on the pitch - probably out of fear that his knee wasn't up to the task. (Which turned out to be the case).

But I do think part of the issue last time was he hadn't quite gotten over the psychological damage caused by the first ACL injury. This is why I suspect Robins may continue Jones' stint in the U23s initially to get him completely used to a match scenario and ensure that his confidence is back to where it was before his injury woes. Championship football is hugely intense and throwing Jones into the deep end when he's not match ready may actually do more harm than good, not just physically but for his own personal self-esteem as well. So continuing his work in the U23s for a few months to get his sharpness back will be at least a good start in hopefully getting him back into the first team, getting his mojo back and allowing him to showcase the talent he previously showed in League Two.

Funny you say that, I was also on holiday and in a bar where they were showing sky sports news. It was genuinely glitching, JUST as it went to the ground for Yeovil’s 2nd goal. It kept showing the report and goal over and over, must’ve been 50 times, just rubbing that salt in. When it got back to normal it was 4-1... that’s when I decided to get on the shots.

I was away for the Lincoln game mentioned earlier where Rhead just bullied is. Spent all day trying to get the internet working at my cousin in law’s (is that a thing?) new villa in the south of France only to later find out it wasn’t working because she hadn’t paid the bills and had been cut off. I ended up watching using my phone on the roof which was the only place we had signal.

I remember the 6-1 win at Cheltenham. Sounds like a glorious memory right? Except my overriding emotion was annoyance - that we could do that to teams in the division and yet hadn’t walked away with the league. It all turned out brilliantly of course but the fact that we missed out on the automatics was an underachievement.

Like Accrington with Kelly Evans at RB, Rhead sat on Ryan Haynes, which was a complete mismatch... After that match, MR went with Stokes til the end.

A big match that you would not have seen was when Hiram Boateng destroyed Lincoln the night before Meadow Lane. Was vital to play a footballing team at Wembley rather than the long ball thugs.

Yeah I do remember thinking at the time he was brought back far too soon. Not that my medical opinion counts for anything! But from memory it certainly seemed that he wasn't right both mentally and physically just from watching him play.

You're right Jones, for the first time since his very first ACL injury, will probably be at the same level fitness-wise to the rest of the team which gives him a solid grounding for the season - also great that's he's getting his first full pre-season under his belt since the League Two campaign. But my point isn't necessarily about him getting in condition, but rather getting match sharp, polishing his touch, and getting his in-game alertness and decision making to where it needs for him to be considered effective enough to be included in a first team match setting. Something that can only be achieved by getting minutes. He's obviously not as behind as he would've been in normal circumstances as the whole team hasn't played since March. But he's only featured in two first-team games and a couple of months worth of U23 games (not sure on the exact figure) in around 20 months. That's a hell of amount of time being out of the picture and still probably leaves him a bit of a way off in comparison to his teammates - so although I hate the saying, it really does remain to be seen whether the elongated break will benefit him or not. Like I said, Robins' comments suggested it was far from ideal for him. I think what is certain though is that Robins won't want a repeat of last time, hence why I wouldn't be all that surprised if he continued taking a gradual approach Jones with regards to getting him into the first team picture beyond pre-season. Either way I'm looking forward to seeing him back playing!

I agree about Jones probably being used more in a central role. I know it was only in the U23s, but from watching him play in that position a couple of times last season he certainly looked a threat.

Me and my dad hadn’t bought tickets for some reason, but at about 12pm we decided to try our luck on the home gate, and it worked! Was stood on the terrace behind the dugout. There was a few of us scattered, the fools blew their cover on the first goal, but we resisted celebrating because we wanted to watch the game. I almost blew it for Biamou’s bicycle kick. They were very complimentary of McNulty’s last goal. There were a few comments behind us about not owning our ground when the SBA were singing.

Other than that, Notts away in P/o’s. Was gutted because my dad was in Cornwall so he missed out on going. He managed to see it on TV in a pub with no volume. For me that game was better than the final.

Ended up in a pub with a load of travellers in who genuinely did have their dags in there with them.

I had to leave that Lincoln game early.... Rhead and his antics in front of the huge away support pissed me off big time

I rate Jody, but IMO we are better and more balanced without him. In the league 2 promotion season, McNulty didn't get going until Jody was injured. His decision making is poor (Stands back and waits for abuse)

Tend to agree that in that season he tried to do too much on his own. The injury allowed others the grow into their role.

However at championship level I think he’ll be like a new signing. He’s got the ability to be an asset but won’t be trying to take the whole opposition on knowing they’ll be much better that league 2 players!
