I don’t use this word often but what counts !!!
celebrating this is awful, but please, please, someone tell me why do these people not stay in France, or the first country that they arrive in ? What's so awful about France, Germany etc ?
I liken it to offering someone sleeping rough on the streets of Coventry a one bed flat and they say no, I want a 3 bed detached in Stivichale (I can't spell it ). I think that's where the resentment arises.

If they speak the language why shouldn’t they? I’d rather emigrate to America or Canada for the same reasons.

Are you honestly telling me if the geography were reversed you’d be on here begging them to stay in the U.K. and not cross to France?

Tell you what, I wouldn't fancy living in a country which the desperate and disposessed want to avoid when trying to escape abuse and repression...

Because they're told it's great over here by smugglers. Can't make any money out of people if you tell them "Do you know what? It's better here actually"

The government are remotely bothered about solving this problem. They’ve had 10 years so far and have made no progress at all. It’s much more beneficial to them to allow intolerance and hatred to grow, so they can wheel it out as a distraction technique everytime something else they are responsible for goes to shit.

Farage only gives a shit because it makes him money somewhere along the line.

When they’re being so brazen about it publicly you don’t exactly have to go looking for it.

I didn't have to look far to see people gloating about the death of trumps brother... Moral of the story is... There are bellends everywhere from every side of every argument

Of course there is, never said anything different. The implication of the OP is I went looking for it. I didn’t. That was the only point I was making.

neither did I and the same happened. I started a thread on the other forum about the young lad who won Everton supporter of the year, that popped up on my timeline again last night so I started reading the comments, 1 bellend on there make shitebag remarks and trying to be edgy, wankers everywhere unfortunately.

This is how I see it ....
" Hello . You shouldn't sleep out on the streets it's dangerous and it's very bad for your health. I'm from an organisation......blah blah. We can give you a roof over your head , hot food etc. "
" I don't want that, I want a 4 bed detached with a swimming pool"

" Really ? You can fuck off then ".

Do you think Britain has a more generous welfare system than France? If not I’m not sure how this analogy works.

Had a quick look and from what I can make out in the UK asylum seekers get £37.75 a week, accommodation and access to the NHS. The accommodation seems to generally be of a pretty low standard.

If they're successful and become a refugee I can't find anything to suggest they get more than anyone else in the country so that's £409.89 a month if you're over 25.

in France asylum seekers get €47.60 (about £40) a week, accommodation, health insurance and subsidised public transport.

If they become a refugee they are on the same system as someone French. Their system seems a lot more complex than ours but from what I can make out the minimum is €559.74 (about £500) a month.

If you are fleeing a war torn country why isn't France good enough ?
If you were homeless would you say no to being offered accomodation in the hope of something better.....bearing in mind you are absolutely destitute ?
Its not rocket science.

So should only neighbouring countries take refugees? Can you not see how that might be a problem?

Let’s flip it around: given we are an island nation surrounded by first world countries, what do you think our role in the current migrant crisis should be?

You make it sound like all asylum seekers are heading to the UK when the reality is its a very small percentage.
That's a fair point Dave but I still can't understand the need for travelling across most of Europe.
If my house is on fire and my neighbour offers me a room I don't say no thanks I want a mansion with double garage and half an acre....if you catch my drift.

What if it was the bloke with the mansion who set fire to your house?

“Britain! Greatest country in the world!”

“Can’t see why people want to come here, France is much better”

🤔
I'm not at all sure what that means really. If you're fleeing a war torn country, should you really be getting your European tourist book out to find the best places to stay , or where the fastest broadband is ?

I've often wondered how they'd react if they interviewed a refugee in France and asked hem if they intended to come to England and they replied "no. France is better". I imagine a load of them would be apoplectic this person didn't think Britain was better than France.

Definitely worth sponging off by travelling on lethally disntegrating rafts and the like.

I'll never understand why some aren't proud that we're a country seen as helping the dispossessed, the desperate, and those subjected to violence and torture.

And why some don't recognise how lucky they are not to be in that position.

I imagine "they" would hope he'd say he was just grateful to be somewhere safe and that he didn't mind which country he found himself in .
..but then he'd want the best wouldn't he, particularly after being bombed or tortured or witnessed disease, starvation and death.

Imagine how different things would be if we never invaded Iraq, afghanistan and the US kept their beaks out of the middle East...

We probably wouldn't be having this chat

following on from the thread you started on Christopher Hitchens I'm listening to his debate on the Iraq with Mark Danner from 2003.
I'd love to hear his thoughts on the world today.
