Having mulled over the two matches, some thoughts....

We have a few more 'fringe' players who look as though they mat be able to step up and do a job, which was really encouraging.

With all the 'nice' midfield players, Allen, O'Hare, Shipley types it was good to see that Eccles could bring something a bit different - particularly as back up for Kelly. He seemed to like a tackle, kept it fairly simple and looked to have a good bit of enrgy about him. Thought he was really promising.

Hamer - liked him, but you can see that his natural combativeness is going to lead to yellow cards. If he picks up a yellow early on in a game,he is a red card waiting to happen - unless he has a 'Michael Doyle' type intelligence to control himself. MR/AV are going to have to work with him on that,

Bapaga - really exciting talent, and interesting to see how he develops. You can see that he may become one that big clubs start to sniff around.

Mason - still think he can do a job. If we go 4-4-2, he could play behind Giles?

Thought Posh were poor up front, but our second string centre backs looked comfortable I thought.

Jodi Jones - like a new signing. Happy to have the ball, without looking as though he was scared of taking a whack, and still has the trick to stand up the defender and create a yard for himself. Creative and a goal threat. Really chuffed for him and for us, and can see him getting game time - which seemed a long shot a few months ago.

I thought Liam Kelly looked a bit sluggish (but been out with a niggle, so maybe that explains it) and thought it emphasised why we need to strengthen in that area. With a lot of games coming, you'd expect him to need some extra recovery time this season, so a new CDM is a priority, plus maybe a second (loan?) as if anything happens to Sheaf/whoever, and kelly is struggling we are back to square one.

Sorry old bean, going to have to cancel that shooting party next week. The missus will be at Burleigh and I'm getting roped into playing a polo match. Also the gardener has told me he wants my input on what to do at the bottom of the garden so that a couple of hours just for the travel. We'll rearrange it and have a spiffing time.

Mason had a very good game.
All the young players did well; very encouraging.
O'Hare never stops running!
Wilson had a bad game but the reaction is OTT.
Jones could have a great season.
Played some really good stuff in patches.

Can’t argue with this 👍🏻

Had to have it explained by Samo but was funny once I got it

Agree with all that.

I thought the second team lacked cohesiveness when Kelly went off, which perhaps shows the value of having experienced hands.

Exactly this regarding Kelly. I watched him very closely yesterday, he's an incredibly 'boring' player to watch from a neutral point of view but every team needs someone like him. Sort of player you only really notice we miss when he's not on the pitch, which again speaks to the experienced head point. He plays generally very simple passes and keeps possession well, while also directing some of the other youngsters on positioning, decision making etc.

This is something I’d worry about if we got Sheaf or Garner or similar to replace Kelly. This would be our first XI:

Maroši (26)
Dabo (24)
Rose (24)
Hyam (24)
Østigård (20)
Giles (20)
Hamer (23)
Sheaf (22)
O’Hare (22)
Allen (25)
Walker (23)

Something to be proud of I reckon

Yep all for giving young players opportunities. I like our model of having just a few experienced campaigners (i.e. Kelly, McFadz, Godden) amongst an otherwise young squad with resale potential. I think having at least 1/2 of those 3 on the pitch on most games will be key this season, while we get to grips with the Championship again

Yep - you'll win nothing with youngsters.......

Whereas last year we scored too few, but conceded even fewer, on the basis of the warm ups we are the reverse, scoring goals but conceding too many. Instead of 1-0 it's 3-2. A different, if more high risk, one goal margin. I'd say removing 3 out of your 5 backs (Dabo, Ross And MacC) leaves us potentially wobbly. A lot hangs on Giles and the norwegian guy.

I'm proud we have a good young team.

You cannot break up that leadership duo of McFadz and Kelly right away in this league. Maybe one of them could be dropped, but not both. With the condensed fixture list, injuries and suspensions, there will be opportunities for the next 'generation' on leaders to emerge in this team. In my view, McFadz and Kelly were instrumental in our successes last season because a young team needs experienced players to guide them.

For me, if we don't plan on signing any experienced Champ players, Kelly and McFadzean's importance grows. Incidentally, those two make up half our squad's Championship experienced players, with only Allen and Walker playing in the Championship previously.

I expect both to start the season and see how they get on performance wise but their experience will be vital early on as we step up a level. As the season draws on we may well find that one or the other plays (barring injuries etc)

One of the most exciting teams we have ever seen were the Sexton team, which was full of youngsters. Sealey,Gillespie, Dyson, Whitton. Thompson et al. Can't remember their average age, but it would have been similar to this crop, with possibly a few younger players in it.
In terms of the future of our club, if a few of them start pulling up trees at this level, it will hep us both on the pitch and in terms of financial stability regarding transfer fees. Never want to think of selling players, but a couple of superstars suddenly pay for a chunk of a stadium (dons tin hat!)

Wasn't it Milne's team in reality?

It must be hard for the players like Kelly who have been loyal to us and been instrumental in two promotions, to suddenly, after another promotion, find themselves no longer first choice (if that doesn't happen to Kelly it may do so for Godden or Max). You can understand why those on the up want to move, knowing that even if they are in a successful team they may be punished for it.

I’m amazed how young Milne was he was only 44 when he was sacked!
Did very well after us too.
I remember it as a very positive era .
Not necessarily ultra successful but it was enjoyable watching young players evolve from our own stable .
I hope the current crop can emulate .Different era but the level then was probably between mid table Li and same for Championship
Fitness/Systems and Imported player's being the difference between then and now, technology also.
