Thorn: Players believe they will bounce back (4 Viewers)

ANDY Thorn wants his Coventry City players to enter League One with a quiet confidence to get the job done.
The Sky Blues are among the bookies' favourites to gain promotion next season and the City boss is determined that his players have the belief that they can achieve the club's goal.

“They will go in knowing that there's only one thing we're looking for and that's to come straight back out,“ said the City boss who, like the fans, will be running the rule over the new fixtures which were released today.

“They know that and are aware of that, so there will be a new belief in the camp to go with everything else that will be new around Ryton.

“They will believe in themselves and their ability but they'll also know it will be hard work. They are good lads who are prepared to work their socks off.“

One player who knows the third tier of English football well is Carl Baker, who had a season and a half at Stockport County before switching to the Ricoh Arena in January 2010, having scored an impressive 13 goals from midfield in the division in the first five months of the 2009/10 campaign.

Thorn said: “Bakes knows his way round that league and he was unlucky with his injuries last season, so he's desperate to get going again and we need players like him to be right on top of his game.

“The young boys as well, they've had their taste of the Championship and they know what it's about and what's required. They have all seen the celebrations at Southampton and norwich before and that's what we want.

“It would be nice to have our own party and that's what we'll aim for.

“They have all got to be bang at it when we come back and give 210 per cent, like we always do.

“I think we've got quality in the side and will have more quality in the side, especially if we can add who we want to add, and I think we'll have a really good chance. and we need to hit the ground running because pre-season is going to be really tough.

“It's important that we're pro-active and on the front foot, and who knows what the pre-season is going to throw up because the last two seasons we saw nathan Cameron and Cyrus Christie come through pre-season and all of a sudden started. So it's an important time and we can't carry passengers.“

Fook me, 210%? What the fook next!

It used to be the good old rational and reasoned 100% It, then went up inexplicably to 100%, even though that made no sense at all, like 25/7 and 8 days a week. Then people started talking about 150% and now 210%.

This isn't just Thorn mind, there's fooking thousands of people coming out with this inane tosh. Really pisses me off. Why not just be done as say we are going to give it eleventy billion percent!! :censored:

Now excuse me while I go and put my 3 slippers on, shave both my heads and scratch all four of my bollocks before preparing myself for my 25 hour shift at work!

Grrrr .....

Really starting to get fed up hearing about how well were going to do. Thorn & the players need to shut up and let their actions do the talking in august.

What a bullshit lie of a story, I bet Thorny never said any of theses words, I bet when the interview took place that Thorny just said "look CET my jobs shit, SISU are d1ckheads and you need a story, so make one up cause I just don't give a shit anymore, I'm only here cause its a fucking job at least...."

Yeah, probably right.

Andy Thorn - Sisu are not backing me and my job is all but impossible!

Interviewer: So what you are saying there Andy is that you are really looking forwards to the new season!

Andy Thorn: Unless we bring in at least 6 players we are going to be down at the wrong end of the table.

Interviewer: So, in saying that I take it you're saying you're aiming for the play-offs then!

Andy Thorn: This embargo is really doing my swede in and I am really, really pissed off big time.

Interviewer: So, raring to go for the new season and all calm and relaxed?

Interviewer: So, you believe your players and squad are big enough and strong enough to give things a real go this season?

Andy Thorn: Fook off! We've got no chance, the players aren't good enough and we are too short of numbers! You can fook right off there!

Interviewer: I take that as a yes then!

Whether you like or dislike Thorn, I am sorry but it is so obvious that he actually said the things quoted in the story.

I mean as a typical Thornism, who else would say the boys are going to give 210%

I don't really know what he is supposed to do.

He is a manager, part of his job is to motivate the team. He also has to come across as positive to the press.

He may get some respect from some of us, however I think he would be severely criticised by most fans if he came out and said

"To be honest we will be battling relegation, the squad is too weak. The owner will not replace the good players that are leaving. We have to depend on the kids. You should gradually introduce the odd kid and not force 6-7 of them on the scene and end up depending on the poor buggers, instead of developing them at the correct pace. This may ruin their careers before they even start."

My gut instinct if he said this he would get sacked. I know some of you want that. Personally I don't.

We have seen that when people leave this club they don't get replaced, hence I think we will end up with Carsley.

Thorn has a season and 10 games under his belt now. Specialising in dealing with the crap that is thrown at him by these owners.

This would be a nightmare start to a career for Carsley and I dont think he would be ready for that yet

Dongo, all it does is heap expectations onto a wafer thin team already lacking in sufficient quality to come right back up. Perhaps a more measured cliche like 'It's going to be a long hard slog but we'll be giving it all we've got' would be better.

Nothing wrong with this. he is praising a few of his players trying to be positive in dark dark times. I am not going to start slatting a guy for trying to motivate a few players and try get a winning menatilaty together. have we signed anyone no. Our players we have good enough for this division yeah. Think they need to be reminded that they can actually win some football games. He is not going to come out and say its usless team have a load of underperformers, cant sign anyone, division is really strong and we will struggle. No manager would come out and be negative in pre season. Lets be fair. Wheter or not we deliver it would certainly not be helped by a negative down beat interview.

The problems at CCFC are not andy thorns making. He is what we have running our sinking ship and with no alternative for a replacment i would rather Thorn dealing with this as he has done for past season than someone new being fed lies beliving he will have money, players wont be sold, he can sign players on decent wages. To then come out 6 months later say it is not working and have him resign or board sack him.

Shut up, buy players and THEN, when we have a team and a decent squad AT can start giving it the the big one. This is really pissing me off all this talk of Bang, bang, bang BS!

210%? Like we always do????? Have I missed something. Shut up now!!!!

I know what you are saying, but having a read of this thread as a dip sample, do you think it has heaped expectation?

These bunch of jokers have nothing about them. Why does Thorn insist on talking crap?? They need to do all the talking behind closed doors and show us on the pitch.

So who thinks he should say we could be in for another relegation battle? That would be good for morale

We do have players good enough to do well in Div3. We just have a shortage of players. We are weak in a few positions. This don't mean we are going to struggle. If we are lucky with injuries then we will do well. If not then the gloomy predictions could be right if we don't bring players in.

Just remember most teams in Div3 are shite. We are not shite YET :)

Absolutely right, we wouldn't go to work and drive a Forklift for example if we had no arms to steer it with, it's another weak story that we do not need to hear right now imo.

Astute, how the hell are we going to score enough goals with only one decent striker on the books?

Cody and Sheffers are both strikers that can score goals. If we can keep the remainder of our defence together we will do at least OK.

Sheffers hasn't played as an out and out striker in a long time, and is approaching the wrong side of 30. Even if both were to be available for all 46 games, could you see them scoring 25-30 each?

I'd prefer it if he said nothing at all. I don't want to hear about how fantastic the players are, I want them to prove it on the pitch. That's the only place it matters.

I don't think managers really have the option of saying nothing.

I doubt he rang up the paper last night and demanded to have his insightful comments published - I'm guessing that they contacted him.

Lots of media outlets with lots of space to fill leads to lots of inane comments!!

Of course he could have. Something along the lines of. We are eager to make new signings to complement the current squad, the players aren't back from their summer break but once they are back and assessed we'll be making a statement.

Not the drivel he comes out with. We'll give it 210%, baker got 13 goals in half a season so put him down for 40 next year and when we win the league we'll have a huge party.
