Was really hoping they wouldn't go ahead. The had 4 more positive cases yesterday so I had hoped it would be the final nail but it appears not.
I suppose playing with a significantly weakened team and losing is better fpr them £££s wise than not playing at all. If they don't play the final i think it would be almost curtains for them.

Yeah, thats why I said, theyll be better financially playing kids and losing rather than forfeiting and not playing at all. Lovely that they lost n all, but its also been a nice little pay day for the annoying tossers.

It’s wonderful to see them lose that. With regards to play offs it’s no different to using them to decide EFL promotion really. A team that finishes 3 places below you can take the prize.

I have no real knowledge on the subject, but I'd imagine the main benefit for Wasps is the fact they finished top 4, and I assume therefore gained qualification to the top European competition next season.

I'd expect this would be more significant than whether they won/lost today in the grand scheme of things money-wise.

It's not really the same at all really though is it? You don't have 1st and 2nd places involved in the play offs.

All taken from the US because it's more £££. At least in the US the teams involved don't all play each other due to different leagues/divisions so it has some validity to find the best. When you;re picking them from the same league who've played the same teams you have over the season it kind of makes it hollow IMO and best treated like a separate small competition

Absolutely.
Ex have topped the league in each of the past four seasons, yet, ridiculously, haven't been crowned 'champions' each time. A travesty of money over integrity.
(The previous season they were equal top too, but officially second on a win-count, even though they had a better points-difference. Fucked up, is that).

What do you mean? All of the European football leagues declare the first placed team as the Champions, it's only dreadful American or otherwise displaying those symptoms i.e. designed for TV, use play offs as a way of increasing commercial exposure etc that do it differently.

Not too different to how we have a 3rd promotion spot using the playoffs.

The fairest way to do it would be to have 3rd place, but also a pretty boring way to end it.

I'd understand the rugby play offs if it was to decide a 2nd place finish to play European rugby or something.

As other people have mentioned, the playoff system is quite common for a number of sports. The context for rugby is very different too.

With Rugby Union, international players who are called up play for their country in the middle of the season, do not play for their clubs during their call up. For example, literally half the Saracens starting team were off playing for their various countries over the years. Therefore, there are teams disproportionately affected by the international breaks. You don't have this in football where there are regular breaks for the international fixtures.

Practical example, imagine the fuss if half the Man City or Liverpool teams were off on international duty and a team with few internationals were able to capitalise and finish 1st place.

A playoff system to determine the winner of the Premiership (football) wouldn't make sense. However, it makes perfect sense to have a playoff in Rugby Union.

it’s not great I think it’s around 600,000 for the winners and 300,000. I heard that the premier final was 500,000 and runners up 250,000
