Very True we had Paul Cook who certainly redressed the balance i quite like Cookie when he played here gone up more in my estimations now after tonight! Sure he sais "we" st some stages tonight just to wind Matty Mills up further
I liked him too although I thought he was a poor man’s McAllister. One of Big Ron’s first signings iirc. Got sent off at West Brom in the Cup replay much to the Albion’s fans pleasure, him being an ex Wolves man.

He was here before Big Ron, in fact he stopped playing once BR became manager

He was not up to macca but was a very good player for us - remember that West Brom game I was there Nuddy's goal dribbling from inside our own half top win us the game with 10 men that was a great night!
Agreed and I was there too that evening. When their player got sent off the game changed and Dion and Nuddy saw us through.

Was there too, think they were down to ten by then too. Standing in a terrace overflow next to a bunch of Albion knuckle draggers suckered into reacting to Cov fans constantly winding them up by the end of the game almost all had been turfed out in hand cuffs obviously targeted by the old bill and could see them being put into police wagons.

Great game that, giving them "boing boing" after we come back from being a goal down with 10 men.

He couldn’t have been very old when he played for us - seems years ago

He wasn't. Was harsh at that time, Davenport was sold from under the manager, turned out we didn't actually have the cash to sign McKay, so we ended up with Mills and... Leacock? Neither had the experience we needed.

If memory serves we agreed a fee for Mackay then West Ham bid more and...we didn’t have more

Still being a teenager I was quite excited that we signed Stern John. That was about as good as the season got. Florent Laville, anyone?
We didn't have the money for him either! Our esteemed chairman 'got a slapped wrist' from the bank, apparently.

Peter Reid “I’ll take the job if you keep Davenport”

Big nose “you have my word”

A few weeks later in training

Peter “where’s Callum”

Big nose “he’s gone Peter”

We looked set fair for an OK season early on, didn't we. My memory really is shot to confuse the two(!) but it was... Sunderland / West Ham we beat just before he was flogged, wasn't it.

Not saying we'd have pulled up any trees, and it was downright stupid to remove Black given what he'd done, but Reid did have a half-decent managerial record up to that point. Not just losing Davenport, but demotivating further a manager whose heart wasn't really in it anyway was a double whammy.
