Abolishing the electoral college is nonsense. Firstly, it requires constitutional change - around 66% in favour in Congress and/or the Senate. Secondly, and most importantly, it puts the power firmly into the hands of the largest states, California, Texas, NY and Florida.

In a UK context, we would let the city of London decide the outcome of national elections.

We don't elect an individual to be President or Prime Minister.

I've said before our elections need constituencies to ensure every area is heard. But at the same time we need a method which is more representational of the populace overall hence why I think FPTP is fine to elect the commons and a second chamber should be elected via PR as a balance to reflect that.

So in the US the executive can be chosen via PR, the legislative is chosen using a winner takes all method. That representation is still there but in another branch of government.

Also regarding the largest states having the power, is it right that a handful of farmers in the mid-west who make up a fraction of the economy have more of a say proportionally than millions of people who make up huge amounts more of the economy? California has openly talked about seceding from the States and if it became independent it would just by itself be a major global power. Whereas you could take the 'red' central belt of the US and it would largely be an irrelevance on the world stage economically.

It's not a foolproof solution but it's a better one than currently exists.

Can we have some common sense, please? You clearly haven't read my posts properly at all. The way you are talking clearly shows that.

I have repeatedly said I do not care who wins, it really doesn't bother me. If someone held a gun to my head I would probably say Biden, but I wouldn't be rushing to get my cock out for either one of them. I am not pushing any agenda, nor do I care about the result.

You are so one sided it is quite remarkable, especially compared to some posters on here. How on earth can you try and say the postal ballots are totally fool proof? If it was the other way round and Biden was behind, with Trump looking likely to win, you would probably be on here saying some shit about how Trump had fiddled it in his favour. As the interaction with Dreamer shows, even if there hasn't been any interference and it is clean (which I am sure is very likely), the whole process is fucked and there are definitely reasons to be suspicious. That goes for BOTH the Democrats and Republicans.

As I said, if Trump does lose, he should step aside. This stuff about 'no more votes' is a joke. Think you are getting worked up about not a lot and directing it in the completely wrong direction.

There are definitely some common sense fixes that could make the American system better - some of them already mentioned above. But this isn’t a partisan thing - the only reason it appears that way to you is because only one side is suggesting there are ANY problems with mail-in ballots. I’m very comfortable with saying they’re fool proof because there’s no evidence to say otherwise. Americans have been using them for years and it’s never been a problem (it still isn’t). We wouldn’t even be talking about them in the first place were it not for Trump, who is once again setting his own agenda and playing certain people for a fiddle. You don’t have to be one of them unless you want to.

Remember Bush and the 'hanging chads'? That was ongoing for months.

it did, and I don't have a problem with Trump raising issues of fraud if he believes that's the case and has evidence and does it in the correct way but he's just stirring up trouble. He doesn't give a fuck if people get hurt because of his rhetoric.

That's crazy. Why do it in a state the Dem's are likely to win reasonably comfortably anyway. If you were going to do this you'd do it in swing stats like Penn and Wisconsin.

Be like us saying we're going to cheat for a penalty in a game we're 3-0 up in but not do so in a game that's 1-1.

Even if we cheated we’d lose

Best guesses all

PA -
GA -
SC -
NV -
AZ -

I'm going for

PA - Trump
GA - Biden
SC - Trump
NV - Biden
AZ - Biden

Same but if the votes in PA keep breaking the way it is in PA it could well be Bidens. They are currently have a lot of big city postal votes to count.

PA - Biden
GA - Biden, but it'll be VERY close
SC - this has already been called for Trump, but assuming you mean NC, also Trump
NV - Biden
AZ - Biden

That Jake Tapper link is hilarious (and also about three years old)

Some reports that votes are starting to favour Trump in Arizona. Not enough to turn it over yet but if the trend keeps in that direction it could tip in Trumps favour. Not that ultimately it will change the big picture, especially if the opposite happens in Pennsylvania.

The more you think about it the more outrageous it is. So because democrats are more likely to follow covid secure guidelines and not vote in person trumps team want votes on the day to be the only ones counted. Unbelievable!!!

Looks like Pennsylvania and Georgia will be Biden too and maybe Nevada and Arizona will go to trump and North Carolina and it won’t matter. Really pleased trump won’t be in for democracy but it’s a shit show

Most of the votes left in Arizona are in Maricopa County (Phoenix) which is still breaking democrat. At the moment this is why the US news networks still give it to Biden.

For anyone who is interested here is the fox nmews (just so I can't be accused of post liberal propaganda by some of tyeh more head the ball posters here).

Maricopa County is the light blue one. It may seem a small place in a sea of red but you have to remember over half the population on the state of Arizona live there.

send the folk from Sunderland over
they manage to get it done in about 20 minutes. Nevada take 3 weeks to do it. Just open local counting centres and send the total to a head office. It's a shambles and is a pretty decent reflection of many things in that country.

Particularly as most of Nevada live in a handful of places

That’s because most residents of Sunderland have extra digits on their hands so only natural that they can count quicker than most:)

Ultimately everybody wants people in power who align with their own beliefs... Which is effectively what you're saying here... And that's fine tbh

Do you not think established political norms like leaving office gracefully and encouraging respectful support and opposition are worth something?

I don’t care what platform you want to run on, even outright fascism or communism, as long as you respect the democratic process.

We’ve known forever there’s a cheat button in democratic societies around populism and appealing to people’s base fears and interests. But it’s a dangerous genie to let out the bottle so generally we don’t do it.

What’s shocked most people about the Brexit or Trump wins weren’t the policies themselves so much as the loss of those norms. Once they’ve gone it’s hard to get back.

He has governed as a classical neocon, granting huge tax cuts to the rich that make Dubya look like FDR. He took millions of people off healthcare, refused to raise the minimum wage, indulged in rampant corruption and signed up to a sneaky back door NAFTA 2.0. Oh and he didn't get Mexico to pay for a wall either.

By any measure he broke nearly every promise he made so for him to bag nearly half the vote still is frightening and shows just how bad a candidate Biden is

Pennsylvania expecting to finish counting today (USA/Pennsylvania time) so fingers crossed by the time we wake up in the morning it will all be over.

About 100,000 votes remaining in Georgia, Trump's lead is just 13,000. If Biden can bag 60% or more of those he takes it
