Being on the bench doesn't count if they don't get on
One of the factors in increased substitutions is the need to protect players from themselves by soldiering on with head injuries

Different scenario for me. I’m all for allowing a fourth ‘concussion sub’ in certain circumstances, but I’d expect a concussion assessment to be carried out in the moment. Think it’s dangerous that things like this could happen when a team has used all 3 subs and the concussed player is all but forced to carry on.

I have heard about this concussion sub idea but I don't understand it. Why would an extra sub be warranted for a concussion, but not for a broken leg, ACL, or any other serious injury?

Because someone with a broken leg isn’t going to play on, whereas unfortunately players who are concussed are at greater risk of either playing on or being asked to play on.

I agree with the principle (it seems similar to the rules rugby have) but what would happen if the assessment came back they couldn't carry on? Would that replacement player then have to go off and put the team a man down? If so wouldn't the team just make the assessment last ages so the replacement could stay on? If not you've effectively allowed an extra sub and technically you could replace an entire team by faking a clash of heads and claiming the need to assess for concussion.

Or would you put a time limit on how long before the replacement had to go off (say 5 mins) and say no concussion subs in last 10 mins?

And if it's just for concussion wouldn't people argue for other injuries like muscle problems as they could force themselves to continue and make it a lot worse, be out for ages and do long term damage to their career because the damage will leave the muscle more susceptible to re-injury?

My point with a concussion sub is that it would literally be the opportunity of a 4th sub if a player has suspected or confirmed concussion. Would have to have an independent doctor carry out the assessment to avoid it being open to abuse by teams.

Think it’s fair to say concussion injuries are significantly different to muscle injuries. Getting a whack on your leg doesn’t potentially impair your decision making.
