I don't dislike Robins and he has done a good job for us to the end of last season. But I do think Robins needs to be more cautious in his approach in the Champ. If he thinks we are going to out football teams in this league we are heading back down to League One and he and Adi V might as well go now. We let Birmingham back into the game last night when we changed formation and but for a fine save by Marosi we would have lost. Why could we not have just settled for a point against and an established championship side? We are just far too open with wing backs and two up front, probably because we lack midfield players with Championship level physicality. Teams will just run through a three man midfield made up of the likes of Allen, O'Hare, Shipley, Kelly, Hamer and Sheaf.
We were lucky to have not conceded much earlier with the different formation. We were hardly running the show before the change and while they definitely took the upperhand after it if we'd spent two weeks working on that starting formation and then switched it undoubtedly there's going to be a bit of confusion and people positioning wrong. I firmly believe that had we trained and started with that latter formation we'd have been more comfortable in it and caused Brum a lot of problems.
We looked a bit more solid but still quite porous and were still making a lot of unforced errors and giving the ball away in dangerous areas. In return we looked like we had almost no threat in attack.
It's a balacing act and that tipped the scales way too much in one direction. If we approach games like that for the rest of the season IMO we're more likely to go through the trapdoor.
I agree we do look susceptible behind with wingbacks, although Dabo seems to play much better in that position that RB. But at the same time we actually look capable of causing problems going forward which we didn't do on Fri.
The reason we can't just settle for a point against established Championship sides is cos many of them ARE established Championship sides, so if we do that, accepting the stronger Champ and ex-Prem sides will likely beat us and looking to win against other recently promoted teams chances are we don't get enough points to stay up. Teams like Brum, Forest, Derby, Wed are all established Championship sides, but we have to be looking to win those games to get anywhere. You're suggesting going into them happy with a point at the end. It wouldn't be enough.
