Valletta hit eight past Lusitans
VALLETTA-8, FC LUSITANS-0

Valletta set a new record for the highest victory ever achieved by a Maltese team in European competitions as they trounced Andorra’s FC Lusitans 8-0 in the first leg of their Champions League first qualifying round match the Hibs Stadium this evening.

The scoreline says all about Valletta’s dominance as the Maltese champions blew their dismal opponents apart, racing into a five-goal lead inside the opening 22 minutes.
Michael Mifsud scored four goals as Valletta effectively booked a second qualifying round match against Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade.

Valletta showed their attacking intentions from the start as they took the lead after just three minutes. Jonathan Caruana, deployed in front of defence in Valletta’s 4-1-2-3 formation, headed home from Jhonnattann’s cross.
The Whites should have doubled their lead two minutes but Jhonnattan’s goalbound effort was cleared by a defender after Mifsud had dispossessed FC Lusitans goalkeeper Andres Benitez.
The Citizens soon made it 2-0 thanks to Mifsud who scored with a downward header from Jhonnattann’s excellent cross.
The floodgates were now open as Valletta continued to attack their woeful opponents who couldn’t get to grips with the fast breaks of the City midfielders and forward.
The score became 3-0 on 16 minutes when William Barbosa released Denni whose diagonal shot was pushed away by Benitez but Jhonnattann was on hand to slot the ball home from the rebound. Two minutes later, Mifsud, running on to another through-ball from Barbosa, sped into the box, rounded Benitez and drove home to give Valletta a 4-0 advantage.
It was not before the 22nd minute that Lusitans registered their first attempt at goal, Dutch goalkeeper Andre Krul easily saving Lionel Maciel’s central effort.
But the superior Citizens continued to run the show, scoring their fifth goal on 22 minutes. Benitez rushed out of goal to try and clear a cross but Caruana’s pressure unsettled the overweight Lusitans goalkeeper whose half-clearance fell in the path of Jhonnattann. The Brazilian took a touch before curling the ball into the empty net.
Valletta stayed on the attack. On 25 minutes, Mifsud advanced on the right before passing to Roderick Briffa whose first-time grounder ended wide of the far post.
Two minutes past the half-hour, Krul saved a harmless free-kick from Luis Reis.
On the stroke of half-time, Valletta went 6-0 up, Mifsud completed his hat-trick with a low striker after getting on the end of Briffa’s assist.
Three minutes into the second half, Krul did well to puncg away Raposo’s piledriver. In a fast City counter-attack, Denni moved clwar on the left before passing to Mifsud who in turn served Jhonnattann but the latter’s drive was off target.
The woodwork saved Lusitans as Denni’s drive came off the upright after the Brazilian had been released by Mifsud.
Mifsud scored his fourth and Valletta’s seventh on 70 minutes, finishing off a solo run with a simple finish after he rounded Benitez.
Two minutes later, Edmond Agius, who had replaced Jhonnattann, beat Benitez with a curling drive after being set up by Briffa.
With 11 minutes remaining, FC Lusitans’ Luis Reis went close to a consolation goal with a free-kick that sailed just wide of the near post.
Mifsud went close with a long-range lob before a delicate chip by the advancing Denni came off the crossbar.

i would love him back, im sure he could do a job. he was one of those players that got u on the edge of ur seat whenever he got the ball, pity it went sour at the end

I liked Mifsud but not sure if we need another small striker. Also, he thought he was better than CCFC the first time he was here, surely wouldn't come to league 1.

He'd be a decent League 2 striker.. maybe. Most overated piece of shite to wear a Cov top in years.

Don't think anybody scored as many goals as him in a season since we went down except maybe McSheff the season before he was sold.

17 goals in 40 starts and 7 sub appearances one season.

Would be interesting to see how many chances he had. I seem to remember his favourite tactic being smack it as hard as you can from within 8 yards of the goal and hope.

I would have him back in a heart beat if his attitude had changed, which it might have done considering it was that not his lack of ability that left him back playing in malta. Him and King I think were the last players we had that looked fucking dangerous every time they touched the ball, the last players that when you read the team sheet they stuck out and he was the last player to have bags of pace, something we still have a distinct lack of.

Take a look on the Wikipedia page on Mifsud, he has fucked up at nearly every club he has played for (or nearly played for) with his inflated ego making demands which he wasn't really worthy of.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Mifsud

He is a greedy little twat who has ended up back where he started from.

Badly advised, believed his own press, a precocious talent yes, but he always seems to have left all of his clubs under a cloud.

There is a reason he's playing for Valetta. No where near good enough.

And people say Cody isn't good enough but they think mifsud is ffs.

Look at his international record.
For a team like spain that would be seen as prolific... BUT FOR MALTA!
I'd have him back anytime.

I think that Cody is good enough he showed glimpses of class in an injury plagued first season but I also believe the reason he is playing for Valetta is not a lack of quality but his stinking attitude, In the same way Kevin Thornton had the skill but not the attitude.

Memories of Mifsud tend to be rose-tinted thanks to that short but very sweet goalscoring run he had. Other sides of that (and sometimes during) he came across as a tiny sprinter who'd somehow found his way into a football team, and he seems like he messes around with contracts and stuff. Thanks for the memories and all that.

were Mifsuds best games not when he played with Adebola? A big, strong target man to hold the ball up and have pacy Mifsud running off him? We don't have a target man so Mifsud would not suit us imo

I think that is a valid point, although surely if we gave him a free role to roam around would he not be able to create chances for himself and play on the last man for the ball over the top? or perhaps have him running at defenders because I think his pace would have scared defenders.
All said and done though its all hear say because there is no way we will get him back.

True to a point, but his best games were probably BC(Before Coleman), attacking play against his principles.

Still, we were well rid, we've gone from strength to strength ever since.

Now Dele: there is a player I'd welcome back now! Would be perfect foil for Cody and as a squad player. Was great on loan to someone in L1 at the end of last season, can't recall who though?

Is everyone forgetting that Mifsud wanted away? Agree about Dele, always liked him, but the best striker we let go was Jon Stead.

Wiki says Notts County

Also he is 37 now, maybe a few years ago but not anymore for me

1 year deal, perfect (and superior) replacement for Platt. Like Sheringham, "He had no pace to lose in the first place!" :)

Still remember that goal at Blackburn where he basically powered through their defence like Jonah Lomu in his pomp. Remarkable.

Makes my Top 10 City Goals, along with an incredible chip from the halfway line by a player who is still in our squad...
