How long can we keep Hamer? (8 Viewers)

There’s no way we will sell Hamer in January, as he’s central to us staying in this league. That’s worth over £7m.
Added to that Kelly could be out for 3-6 weeks and our games during February look tough.
It’ll be false economy to sell up in January. Additionally, what message does that give to the rest of the squad ? It could undermine the spirit in the team

Why wouldn’t he get a PL move? He’s the best player on the pitch most games, and his technical ability and set piece delivery is absolute top level.
He won’t go for £5m because we won’t sell him for that, you’re looking around £10m if he continues this kind of form through the entire season.

I’d say around 7-8 million for him tops. If that means we could use some of that money to get Leo on a permanent deal and then 3-4 players with more championship quality/experience to solidify our place in the league next season, then sell him to the highest bidder in the summer.

That’s how our business model works isn’t it? And who ever manage to scout him and actually get him to join us probably deserves a pay rise aswell 😂

Off the top of my head Cantwell, Lerma, Hughes, Cook, Da Silva, Ejaria, Dack, Elise, Gibbs-White.

Cantwell - Different type of player. Worth £20m plus.
Lerma - Cost about £25 million.
Hughes - Cost £8m a few years back. Probably worth over £10m.
Cook - Signed for £6m 4 years ago. Probably worth over £10m.
Da Silva - Probably closest comparable player. Doubt Brentford would let him go cheap.
Ejaria - Reading paid £3.5m for him in the summer having spent a couple of years on loan (meaning they've likely put over £5m into him so far). Similar level to Hamer.
Dack - Different type of player. More attacking. Doubt Blackburn would let him go for much under £10m.
Olise - Again plays a different position. Will likely go for £10m plus when Reading sell.
Gibbs-White - More advanced player who is on loan from Premier League. Has played 4 times this season.

He asked me which players I’d swap Hamer for. These were all off the top of my head. I’m sure there’s many more in the league. Hamer has had a good 20 games but to put him alongside some of these is ludicrous.

you cannot seriously think he’s worth at least £10m.

January is when you need to replace him, the summers when you sell him. It’s a mistake we’ve made a number of times over the years, with us we need a centre back, central midfielder, and two strikers in January because that’s what we’ll be selling next summer.

You’ve got to replace, before you sell, if you don’t have the budget to buy Championship experienced players, (which I’m assuming you don’t) because it’s such a hard league for players to find their feet in. As we found last season with a full squad of players inexperienced at this level, and as yourselves will find this season.

You need next seasons replacement leaning from him in training, and replacing him towards the end of games, and for suspensions and resting processes, to give him a fighting chance. If you look at our last 5or6 games Alex Mowatt our captain, who’s contract is up in the summer, as gone from a 90minutes every game, for the past 3 years player, to getting subbed off in the 75th minute most weeks to give Romal Palmer some experience, because we’re obviously cashing in on him during January if possible, this is what you need to be doing with young players at this level we’ve learnt the hard way.

I love that Barnsley is an active member of this forum. We should make some changes to ensure that he continues to feel welcome. Maybe a splash of red in the banner at the top or a picture of Ronnie Glavin holding up a cup or something? And can posters start using some phrases such as 'there's many a mickle makes a muckle' so he feels more at home?

He will play for his country one day I reckon. Wheather it's Brazil or Holland once he gets into the top flight after a few seasons he'll get the call up.

Think he will have 2 seasons here, this season adapting to the English game and improving... Next season we will see him really step up a level... By the end of next season teams will come sniffing

Probably could get around £2-3m in Jan. Have to see how his performances go until the end of the season to assess that.

I see your point though he is on a 3 year contract, it’s not a complete given he goes if we stay in this league.

Barnsley still chasing Whiteman from Donny? I'd love him here tbh.

You’d hope at least until the end of the season but we’ve heard from Boddy and co that no fans in the stadium is hurting us.

We know that there are clubs in the division who are financially far better off than us. Might be a case of offloading hamer in Jan to balance the books (I really really really hope not tho)

No chance we'll be offloading in Jan, that would be suicide.

Blimey. That would put him in the company of regular champions league players. At 23 I would suggest unlikely.

Doubt he'd go in Jan nor end of season either. We're still Covid locked and most clubs are screaming they're short of funds. And with no/limited fans in stadiums, that's not changing any time soon. So it's unlikely we'll get a bid that satisfies the club or Joy. The ONLY thing that may prompt a move is if Hamer himself decides he wants to move on. But isn't he pally with DaCosta, who could influence a stay ?

not sure pal, I think he’s too expensive for us now. we’ve been linked with a central defender from Forest Green, a Striker from Plymouth, and a left back from Exeter. We also tend to sign players for under23s then introduce them steadily over a season or two rather then just ready made first team players.

Another consideration in January is that buying in players from Europe will be far more difficult. Added to which we can expect the fees for UK developed players to be inflated.
The benefits of trading Hamer seem diminished

Why do we have to try and find the negative in everything. The bloke has only been here 5 months and played just 13 games but it seems some people are willing the club to sell him in January so they can have something to moan about.

We all know our best players are likely to leave at some point. Lets just enjoy it while he's here and hope we're in the Championship next season so we have a chance of keeping hold of him.

If douglas luiz from the Villa can play for Brazil than why can't Hamer in a few years?

He's played nearly 50 times in the Premier league at 22 years old and is attracting interest from Man City and Juventus.

I love Hamer, but they are different categories of players right now.
