Anyone starting to feel slighty optomistic? (1 Viewer)

Why do some of you see such mediocre signings as a positive, when we have to sell players of quality to get them? This is backward - not forward.

"Sky sports report Barnsley, Derby, etc interested in 'X'..." = WE DON'T GET THE PLAYER.
"Sky sports report that 'X' is training with Coventry city (because it's his only available option) in view of a temporary contract" = we get the player

So, in answer to the question "...starting to feel optimistic?" - NO. Most certainly not. Sell our decent players and replace them with under-achievers?

It's the winning attitude we need. Throughout the club, staff players and fans.

I'm 30 and all I've ever known is relegation fights. This club needs to learn to win and to challenge. It's been what, almost 50 years since a promotion, so you'd have to be about 60 to remember one!!

That's more worrying than players to be honest.

I am feeling rather optimistic.

Last season we replaced players sold and that left out of contract with youth players. These players now have a seasons experience. We have brought another 6 in. If they can be brought in slowly they can come good quicker than last season when they were thrown in at the deep end. We have signed 2 outfield players so far. More than last season already. Kilbane could also be joined to this list today. He may be 35, but was a class player. Could do a very good job for us on the pitch and off. Sounds like we have other targets lined up.

AT said he had been promised players to come in. Looks as though SISU have learned from their mistakes. They are bringing in decent players whilst reducing the wage bill. We will also be playing at a lower level with players that although relegated were not outplayed.

I looked at what is said to be our main rivals for this season. Not many of them had ANY players I would like us to sign. We have a bit of better quality. If we can keep up with them with effort we should have a good season. We will be in the top half. I am expecting top 6. Top 2 should be our aim.

We will know more towards the start of the season. We can only guess who else will leave. Waste of time guessing who will come in. If Kilbane joins that will be 3 players in positions we need, and 3 players of a quality teams around us would love to have.

We are also well overdue a top 6 finish :)

To be fair, 34 of the 50 were spent in the top flight ;)

True, but how many of those years did we finish top half?

Regardless of what division, it's the mentality. The Man U belief that they are never beaten. That a draw at home isn't enough.

We've had about 46 years of accepting a draw, accepting defeat to big teams... That won't win us a promotion now!

Look at the city team that started life in the championship. How strong it was for the division. But they were that used to losing.

My point was half in jest Si :) Southampton were a club that, until recently, was stuck in the same negative rut we have been in (and for a similar timeframe too). What they have done in League 1 and subsequently the Championship gives me belief that, with a modicum of investment, we can use the third tier to develop that winning mentality we all want to see.

BSB makes a good point here ... a winning mentality developed in this league would be just the medicine we all need right now

Oh I totally agree. It could be a trigger for better things..

Let's just hope we don't do a Luton, Plymouth, Bradford etc.

The clubs you mention there were probably not second tier size clubs to begin with-and this would always catch up with them in the end. Are they all 4th/5th tier clubs? Hard to say, but I'd say the 3rd tier is their optimum level. Without tempting fate, I simply don't see us getting down to that level.

so far its een a good pre season, sure we have lost quality but were in league one, wake up people

the guys that have come in look good enough to add to a league 1 title challenge and thats important.

@ covcity4life....We could have 11 x Messi, but sooner or later they will get injured, and if we haven't got decent enough cover, then there will be NO title challenge. When Keogh and Bigi go, as of now it will be 7 out and 2 in. don't forget it's 7 on the bench this season. Have we got enough nappies, blankets and bottles of warm milk for the benchwarmers?
I know that is sarcasm but I'm sorry, some of you need to come into the real world.

@ BSB.....Luton, and Bradford once played in the top flight, and had decent crowds watching, and at the time were good teams in their own right.

@Diehard Si.....Coventrys' first season in the top flight was a top 6 finish, admittedly after that is was nearly always struggle.:)

Yep, Bradford had 2 seasons, and Luton's last spell was over 20 years ago.

John Fleck. Norwich and Charlton wanted him too apparently, so we did get X.

Oh, forgot to add. Fleck certainly isn't mediocre.

its cool,i know i am level headed, dont worry about that no blind optimism here

but heres the squad if kilbane signs and keogh commits:

murphu/dunn
clarke/christie
hussey/kilbane
keogh/cameron
wood/willis
thomas/brigimama/deegan/kilbane
baker/bell/mcsheffrey/fleck
macdonald/elliott/rod/jeffers

that is strength in depth,2 players for every position

i think people ar eunderestimating how past member sof squad will do in league one whilst overestimating the loss of players who didnt even play last year.

And our last spell in the third tier? 50 years ago; maybe it's the sky blue tinted glasses or the solvent fumes in the lab talking, but I don't see us being in this division for more than a couple of years tops.

@ covcity4life.....according to you, Kilbane is doing a lot of covering, and he hasn't signed yet!...and you have got Keogh and Bigi in the squad. Chances are they both will be gone, as will Deegan. 20 players in all.........We need a bare minimum of 25 players. As it is EIGHT(8) are Academy players. Sorry m8, but I fail to see the strength in depth that we need in your picks.:)

@ BSB.........I'll have some of what you're sniffing m8:laugh:....Seriously though, it's going to be a minimum of another 2 years to get back to the top flight, and that's with all the luck in the world. I wish Keegan was our manager....He said 5 years with Fulham.....He did it in 3 years.:)

i have clearly stated the squad depth is based on kilbane signing and keogh commiting,i never said it was cast in stone, your trying to make me out as having sky blue tinted glasses but its not true,im just musing.

kilbane is a utility player, thats why he covers alot of positions, wont always need to play dependent on injuries.

your assuming bigi, deegs and keogh will go your doing no different to me.

Thing is I'm not talking about getting to the PL, I'm talking about getting back to the second tier.

So you are saying the odds are all 3 players will be gone before the start of the season? I will offer you evens now on this not happening.....anything up to 1k?

You know you want to do it :) Will travel down and we can put the cash safe. Will be worth the journey to make 1k :guitar2:

What is it with you and gambling m8? Does it make you feel big to have that sort of cash to throw around?....I haven't gambled in years(Apart from the Grand National £5 EW. once a year) and don't intend starting now!

Honestly though, do you think that if Norwich and Charlton were really after him he would have signed for us?

He was quoted as saying well before he joined us that he was more interested in playing than the money he could earn at this stage of his career. We all know Norwich have been sniffing around their players. His comment don't prove which clubs were after him, but we were not the only club after him and he will be in our 1st team for sure.

I like to have a gamble. I seem to be quite good at it. My Betfair account bought me my car before the one I have now. I put my money where my mouth is when I say something as a fact. I am not a mad gambler. I like to have a go when the odds are on my side though. I have backed us down from 2.56 to 2.14 to finish in the top 6.

Do you like going out on the p!ss? I only do whilst going to games and special occasions. All my money goes on my family, running my car and following City. If I want to risk a few quid on having a little wager then I will. If I make a statement as though it is a fact I am willing to put my money with my mouth is.

I have a few wagers on this season :)

All winnings on my side will be given to charity from people on here. I always give 10% of money withdrawn from my betfair account away. I like to think it is what helps me with my luck.

OK, maybe not fact, but CHANCES ARE to me means you expect them to be gone when you are talking about what our chances next season are going to be and how small our squad is going to be.
