Too many players being carried at this level.
Godden is the only striker good enough in the whole squad.
while I agree with this, (and to be honest the jury's out on Godden for me as well), this is all down to budget.
It's not these players fault they're in a league which seems to be beyond their capabilities .
We simply don't have the budget to sign a quality striker at this level. I've said it many times, if we let Baka go (if we can get rid of him in the first place), we will not be freeing up much money so will be taking another punt on a player.
Now I'm sure most of us would still try it given his performances but most would still be melting down when the bargain basement replacement turned out to be as out of his depths as his predecessor (which in all likelihood he would).
Here are the current top scorers in the Championship, look at the fees, imagine what the wages are:
Ivan Toney 16 goals - fee
5 mil rising to 10 mil with add ons
Adam Armstrong 1 goals -
1.75 mil
Lucas Joao 11 goals -
4.8 mil
Teemu Pukki 10 goals -
free transfer
Domink Solanke - 8 goals -
19 million
Kieffer Moore 8 goals -
2 mil
Causley Woodrow 8 goals -
765k
Andre Ayew 7 goals -
20 mil
the list goes on and further down you've got big money signings like Pedro on 5 goals who cost 10 mil. That's what we're up against.
Under the current restraints this is going to take time but a lot of our support can't see that. Barnsley were rock bottom for most of last season but rallied at the end and now appear to be kicking on, that's what we have to try and emulate.
But getting wound up because players who aren't good enough for the Championship aren't performing in the Championship in a season we all knew would be a struggle is illogical.
The mad thing is if you go back to last season and read the match threads of any game we underperformed it's the same shit from some of the same posters over and over again, the only difference is the players they target. Last season one of them (pre Christmas) was Godden who is now the saviour whose return everyone is crying out for,
