It’s not a like for like comparison, Walsh was creative in league 1 but unproven in the Championship and by all accounts Sheaf was decent for Doncaster but the step up is proving tough for Sheaf and I don’t think Kelly’s injuries have helped him.
Both goals last night just needed a boot out of play, easier said than done but was possible.

Agree a lot with this but somewhat understandably, errors leading to goals will stick out more than doing the quiet stuff well

You said he "looks to" pass to the CBs as in that's his aim. It's simply not true. He passes backwards 18% of the time & forward 30% of the time.

Hamer passes backwards only very marginally less.

Sheaf should be better in the air given his night, that is one part of his game there is obvious improvement IMO.

I think there's quite a bit he can improve on physically as well as cutting out the mistakes.
As you rightly say though he's 22 years old, playing in a new team in a new league.

He is an excellent deep lying playmaker imo & will have a very successful career but others just can't see it.

He plays like under 23 players do like they have all the tine in the world, personally players like Hyam and the other centre backs shouldn’t have the ball in dangerous places they need to move it on to players further forward, mistakes around the half way line can be defended its much more difficult on the edge of your own box.

He is a good player. IMO one of about five in the squad capable of lasting at this level. All his mistakes are also made by Hamer, Dabo, all the other fans favourites but forgotten immediately because they aren’t the boo boy.

You’ve pinpointed something there and that’s the type of player he is, a deep lying playmaker. People are comparing him to Kelly who is a traditional defensive midfielder, they sit in the same part of the pitch but have a very different role.

Those Sheaf/Hamer stats are interesting. Can I sit in the middle (a bit like Sheaf )? They do maybe show that Sheaf is underappreciated, but I do agree that Stats aren't the be-all and end-all - I'm reminded of when Hughes was always high up in the passing stats, but it did seem a lot were sideways. That being said, compared to what came after, the Hughes / Doyle axis was a high point...

So I'm on the fence with Sheaf. He does seem to take a long time to make his passing decisions, which can mean he gets caught in possession / his passes end up less imaginative than they maybe could be. I hadn't appreciated he was younger than Shipley however. I'm quite happy to accept he needs more competitive match experience to improve. I do also take the point about Walsh, who has attained demi-God status, but hasn't been tested yet at this level, so we're not comparing like with like, anyway.

So, Sheaf - all a bit whatever for me atm. Don't think he deserves singling out but, then, I'm not sure anybody does really. What else was going to happen, but we'd end up with a side who needed time to adapt and improve to this level? Some will, some won't, but they all need that time to find out.

Everything you send is great but it proves that Hamer does more productive things in the right areas it is closer than people would think, Hamer looks busier and is the only one of the midfielders that looks likely to get a goal.

They are all making mistakes but Sheafs seem to stand out more, Hamer seemed to misplace quite a few last night. O’Hare is a worry very busy but producing very little

All of the midfielders need to get more productive in the opposing half, Godden isn’t getting anything at the moment (to me he looks like the injury is playing him up).

Sheaf is a good player, I think his problem is he wants an extra touch on the ball, like he would have got in League One. The step up is huge. Once he realises he’s got one touch max in this league he will be an asset.

does he make mistakes? Yes - but so does Godden, Hamer,Dabo, O’Hare, McCallum. The only difference is - and arguably is a key issue - he plays deep, likelyhood is his mistakes are going to be fatal
