How many games has he missed this season due to injury ?
Barnsley have been a little bit of a surprise team to me this season With respect I expected them to be about where we are but they have had some really good results so fair play to them, Barnsley fans seem to rate Matty James so if it happens looks like a good acquisition to me.

Gonna be a shitter if he doesn't sign now.

Sources look liegit but can't see how we can pull this off. So much doesn't add up:

He's 29 so I doubt environment/play style/coaching features in Leicesters thoughts

Makes me edgy, what's in it for them? Couldn't be a first dibs on Hamer or secure a youth player to swing it could it?

Suppose he could want a move back to the Midlands.
If there’s any player here Leicester fancy they will just come and get him. No need to dangle anyone as bait.

He’s not had any injuries this season, but he’s been looked after. I know most will be surprised by our form, but our fans that watch us week in week out were expecting a comfortable season like this.

Completely irrelevant to the transfer but a relevant anecdote. A friend of a friend went on a double date with his girlfriend while at uni (nearly a decade ago, God I’m old). They go for a meal and they’ve been sat down a few minutes, and the other couple order a ridiculously expensive bottle of champagne. My mates mate is too embarrassed to say he can’t afford it and just goes along with it. A second, and third get ordered and he cant enjoy himself, all he’s thinking about is “how the hell can I pay for this meal?!?” The waiter passes them the bill, the other guy on the double date says “oh no, don’t worry. I’ve got this” and pays for the entire meal. The guys been panicking all evening and not been able to enjoy himself at all, and it turns out he wasn’t even going to have to pay for it. The other guy was Matty James.

I have absolutely no idea how good he is, although he sounds great, but have always remembered who he was just because of this story

Fair play, you do seem to have punched above your weight a bit - I suspect you would probably be at the top of one of those 'handicapped leagues' that bookies run. Usually it is the depth of the squad that sometimes hampers 'smaller' clubs. Still think Wednesday will go down!

depth of our squads unreal for our budget. We’ve got 40+ players that are all in the mix for the first team squad.

Strange Barnsley aren't keeping him? Safe but little chance of play offs so a cash saver?

They entered negotiations to keep him on loan for the rest of the season but it didn’t happen. I do wonder if we have an agreement in place for a loan then summer perm move for him based on us staying in the Champ.

Again, off at a tangent, but this reminds me of a woman I worked with in Warwick. Her son went out on a double date with his girlfriend, and his best mate Jim Threapleton - whose date was Kate Winslet (they subsequently married)

Edit: he didn't know who his mate was bringing on the date; think it was fairly early on in her career.

LeftKnee what have you done! Orders champagne? I can hear it already: 'Big time fucking Charlie. Bin the fucker off.'

Instant new hate figure for some on here following a long series of SBT crimes - including smiling in training, being friendly to fans and the ultimate sin of course of agreeing to selfies. Matty's doomed now! :D

I don’t think even PL sides are in that position?

we sign players that are under 23 for the first team and under 23s, and the majority play in both sides so they’re getting game time all the time so they’re always ready. They’re pretty much all pushing for first team.

I see, how do you keep them all motivated?

we’re constantly improving and selling players, they see the lad that’s two years in front of them playing regularly and then moving to clubs that pay bigger wages, and it’s all the motivation they need. It’s why they come here, we’ve a very good record of developing players to a standard we can no longer afford.

That’s got to put a ceiling on you though. I’m assuming we’re going that way, but I’d like to think if the chance was there even SISU would have a crack at the premier league. (Possibly being optimistic of our owners there)

Fair enough. The lad from FGR looks pretty tidy by another recent example.

Yeah, about that...

Injury after injury after injury. He’s been here eight and a half years and has played 101 league games. 86 of those were in his first three seasons. That’s an average of three a year in the last five seasons. He didn’t play a single minute during the title winning season, and has played 18 times in all competitions since 2016.

Some bright spark at the club decided to give him a new contract after he made one FA Cup appearance in the embarrassment at Newport 2019, and he almost immediately broke down again, so he’s been touring the treatment tables for the last two years. Regardless, he was given a squad place ahead of fully fit Andy King last season. Thing is, in the considerable time that has elapsed since he was capable of playing more than a couple of hours a year for us, we’ve signed Ndidi who is one of the best in the world, and Mendy who is a high quality backup. Hamza Choudhury has somehow found a space on the fringe of the first team as well, despite having a scrambled egg brain and flailing feet. Matty James? Such a talented player, love him to death, but a talent wasted by the sheer misfortune of being one of the most frequently crocked players in the history of the game.

That’ll be why we’re loaning out a 29 year old. His next permanent contract, wherever it is, is likely to be pay as you play.

Perhaps if we have two crocks in James & Kelly we might just get a complete half season out of them.

What do you mean, Max's popularity has partly been built on stuff nothing to do with football itself

Ismael was a cornerstone loan signing of my LMA Manager 2003-5 saves on the PS2. Legendary defender with a set piece bonus
Off at a tangent but on the subject of set pieces,

Those stats on Hamer posted as part of a comparison of who were the most effective players in the Championship highlighted their importance. A very high part of Hamers 'effectiveness' as they measured it was his contribution from set pieces.

This appeals to us, because we have lacked that for years, but as a desirable asset for a higher club it is of lesser value. They have lots of players who are good at set pieces. The Norwich player they assessed was by far the most effective in open play. It is concievable that the very stats minded clubs higher up the League will notice that as well.

Although I'm not normally averse to selling on players at a good profit, it is central to the club's survival, I would like to hang on to Gustavo the Great for a while given the physical fragility and/or lack of experience in the midfield.

Barnsley have developed a high energy style of play, and seem to have a decent recruitment / sustainabilty model in terms of developing players. Fair play to them, when you compare them to someone like Blues, who seem to buy players with next to no sell on value (and have only been 'saved' short term by Bellingham's sale. We have done fantastically so far this season (I honestly thought we may struggle to finish above Rotherham, who have had more recent experience of The Championship) but in terms of a model, we desperately need to get our ground situation sorted asap.
