Not a surprise given how little he's played lately and missing out on the squad last game due to the 5 loanees rule. Think it might have been a mistake by MR not to alternate Sam and Giles more often depending on opposition and attempting to attack some of the teams around more, especially at home.

Watch McCallum get injured early on on Wed now..

We already see how few assists Dabo has, despite a number of excellent crosses every match, because he gets level with the box and has no-one to aim for. So there's no point doubling up and having two wingbacks bombing forward crossing the ball into 1 striker, who isn't especially good at heading the ball anyway.
We have to get a better 2nd AM so that we can play more effectively through the middle if we are going to persist with the box formation. We need to retain possession long enough in the opposition's half so that we can get the AMs into the box and the 2 deeper midfielders to within a 30 yard shooting range.

This is where I think Walsh was different to Hamer, albeit at a lower level. He tended to pick the ball up in advance of Kelly whereas Hamer is usually that bit deeper.

A wing back will never work in our system that plays wing backs? Interesting take.

And yes, most effective. Pushed us forward more, got more crosses in, more successful dribbles. Actually gave the opposition something to think about.

Hes not a wing back. And he never will be! Jeez, a pre requisit of a wing back is the ability to defend (he has zero competency to defend).

He wont ever be deployed as a wing back by any team.

As for being Effective as a wing back i gather not! as he would still be here if the persons who matter most thought so.

No coincident since he was dropped we have not scored from open play. We cant attack teams as it is without losing one of our only decent players who can take a man on and put in a decent cross.

for me this is a big mistake as is not getting rid of a few like Baka to bring in an atm

I liked Giles but imo opinion McCallum is the better all round player.
whether him going opens the door for someone else we’ll see but that takes us over the maximum 5 subs which is annoying as two of them Sheaf and James all being well are possibly signing on regular for next season.

Agree by a distance Sam is better all round player. And he has a goal or two in him. Giles never looked like scoring a goal ever.

He had a shot cleared off the line against Swansea I believe

Zero competency to defend, yet a higher percentage of tackles won than Dabo or McCallum and around the same attempted as Dabo. Fewest fouls committed of all full backs in the division, poor in the air and in blocks and interceptions, but better than Dabo.

If Giles is a terrible wing back, so is Dabo as their stats are virtually identical. Same strengths (dribbling and crossing) same weaknesses (interceptions and aerial duels).

And I bet if he goes to Rotherham he’ll play WB there.

Wow. I seriously recommend a quick drive to Barnard Castle to test your eyesite - you might actually be legally blind on this evidence.

Watch the games statto. Or are you going on record as saying Giles has been as good for us as Dabo has?

He's joining Rotherham to play wing-back.

Eh, maybe. Mostly on both’s early season form though. They’ve been heading in different directions since.

Not been impressed with Dabo short of one or two games. Particularly defensively.
But you put mcallum down for being defensively sound lol

Fancy quoting me on that?

I just think while we’re playing five defensive players centrally and don’t have an AM who is creating anything we should look to the players we have who can create things. And I don’t think Sam “stops, checks, plays it back to Hyam” McCallum is the answer.

Been saying this for weeks we look to work it wide and cross to 1 man, hopefully robins has addressed this going into Wednesdays game...

Enjoy your insight into tactics how would you want to see us set the team out,set up etc ?
Would love to hear where you’d go from here. Both in the short term and assuming we stay up this season how you’d build next year.
Well this season we are now extremely limited by the players we have fit within an already weak squad for the level.

If we're staying with the box we've only really got 4 from 5 to pick from who should be getting anywhere near a start for us in midfield: James, Sheaf, Hamer, O'Hare and Allen. As exciting as Bapaga is, he's still too raw for me and Shipley needs taking out of the firing line.

If Sheaf and James play at the base of the 4, can Hamer play AM? I also have my doubts about how effective he'd be, he just hasn't shown enough composure in his passing in that area of the pitch when he's got into those positions. We may get a few more goals from distance though.

The root of a lot of our attacking problems are, in my opinion, Hyam and Ostigaard :D Not what anyone expected me to say I guess but I'll try and explain:

Hyam and Ostigard get too wide in possession which neuters our midfield. They do that when the wingbacks start to get forward, in order to cover the gaps out wide that they leave behind. (See the dodgy cross field passes vs Reading). The consequence of that is that the two DMs then have very little licence to get forward - they are stuck too deep in order to plug the 2 large channels between the CBs. That then leaves too big a gap between the bottom (DMs) and the top (AMs) of the box midfield. AMs come deep looking for the ball, it all gets very congested in midfield as the opposition midfield step up, and the only easy pass is out wide to Dabo who in turn has very little to aim for.

I would change to a 3-3-3-1.

--------------Marosi--------------
-------Osti McFadz Hyam-------
Dabo------James------McCallum
-------------Hamer----------------
------O'Hare-------Allen---------
--------------Viktor------------------

I'd want the 3 cbs to play a lot more narrow and protect the route to their own goal (that doesn't mean sitting deep). We'd lose some impetus with wingback attacks because they wouldn't have so much freedom but a tighter back 3 will mean one of the DMs can become more of a box to box CM.
I think that will get the best out of Hamer, allow us to play football through the middle without needing Hyam and Osti to be ball carriers so often, push the AMs up with our striker and Dabo still has the energy to get up and down the pitch.

My top 3 priorities for the summer would be: a left footed CB, a better AM option and striker who can bring others into the game better than we currently have.

A shame as he is a threat and good backup at lwb

However hes nowhere near as good as mcallum. But we need to get replacement in now incase of injury

He should have been played more at tip of box. Much better than Shipley

Tip of the box? Where the fuck is that?

We are much better with mcallum at lwb. No debate to be had.
We are. Giles kind of unlucky we got the chance to take McCallum back, mind you but, once that happened, was always going to be the case he was going to go back, really.

Not entirely bothered, although I'm not sure what we will do if Sam gets injured?

Looks like your in know, have inside information?.. selecting their team and formation for their manager are you..lol.

Lets see how he does at WING BACK.

He will likely play as winger (if he gets much game time) and is better suited for a team playing with 2 lunps up front.

What the hell is Robins playing at we have lost our most effective best attacking threat.(according to you and your stats) what a load bolocks. Told you before about stats.

As for his defensive stats. How many attempts at challemgrs does he make? If he makes 2 challenges in 10 games and wins both he has 100% . How many actual defensive challemges has he actually made?

I bet he hasnt won a single aerial challemge....as for defensive challemges won, truly shocked.
