Stretchered off after 5 min last night in the Sunderland game with a suspected ruptured patella ligament injury in his knee. Expected to be out for the rest of the season now having only just returned from several months out with another knee injury.

dont think his injury record was great with us either but was sorry to see him go and think he would have made the step up to the championship in time but given his history of injuries it looks like Robins has again made the right decision in letting him go

Robins offered him a new contract. Willis was stalling in the hope of a better contract (using an offer from a Championshipnclub as bait) which Robins refused. Pretty much said if you can get a championship club/wage then good luck. Look how it ended up
He was an ok player whos speed saved him from time to time, but really don't see where he would get in to our current team. On the bench ahead of Pask is all he could make i'd say.

He'd get in the current side, I'd have him over Hyam tbh

Decent defender but he doesn't get into the current team as his distribution is nowhere near good enough for the way we play

Scored more headed goals than Biamou so get him up front

Based on what though? The last season they played together which was at L1, Hyam was player of the season. He has struggled of late but that imo is the massive gulf between Championship and L1 and nothing to suggest Willis would have stepped up any better. The issue is the quality of the forwards that we now come up against. Not much in most of the teams but all those doing well have a top clinical striker that is beyond our budget and most of them have scored against us too.

Spot on.
Willis was frequently dominated by big, strong centre forwards - the likes of Smith, Moore, Deeney etc would have a field day with him. His use of the ball is poor too. Yes, Hyam's has been a bit erratic this season but levels above Willis.

Based on the fact that his athleticism is more beneficial to us against the current level of opposition than Hyam

Granted, he's not great on the ball

Willis' pace would be an asset at championship level. His use of the ball surely would have developed playing in a team that train and play that way.

I wish him well too, if he was getting more money at Sunderland then he made the right move. If he had stayed here then he would more than likely had the same injury and been on lower money with reduced future prospects. Loyalty from players is rarely repaid financially in the modern game, from a players point of view it's every man for himself.

If he's available on a free in the summer maybe we might resign him?

Yeah nice lovely shame about the injury etc etc...

We’ve got bigger things going on let’s focus on staying up...he wanted to move south closer to London and his mrs ended up making the wrong move up north and will probably never play higher than league 1,followed the money decent servent while he was here, the ship has sailed

There are, and that's what all the other threads are for. This one's to highlight the sad news about one of our former players.

Also, it's amazing the insight you have into the machinations of Willis's transfer. Being so 'ITK', I'm surprised you talk so much shite on here...

Hopefully he gets fit again as he's a decent player. I hope there are no calls for us to sign him again in the summer as we're looking to establish ourselves in this division not the one below.

Now that they've dodged a bullet with the salary cap he'll probably get a new deal at Sunderland anyway.

By all acounts he was one of the few players they were happy with and saying how good he was. The same cant be said of Burge unfortunately
