Thorn already making excuses for hinckley clash. (22 Viewers)

Nope. It was a terrible Americansim; the use of double instead of single quote marks. Convention differs. I would normally overlook such orkish behaviour; but when someone is trying to be smart and is I'll-equipped to pull it off I feel duty bound to remind them of their frailties. God wants me to...

Before correcting grammar of others i would suggest mastering your spelling mungo - *I'll = ill

Fair comment. His health is a worry - however I personally love the passing style we play. I also think he is a good guy doing a difficult job - and what I don't want to see is people getting vocal about ousting him. There are idiots (and yes i'm confident that's the right label) who have a go at him for being fat and sweaty. These are the people I detest and the reason that I leap to Thorn's defence each time the subject comes up.

The notion that every critic only refers to physique is nonsense. Personally I found his style of play in the first half of the season shockingly predictable and boring. It was only when we resorted in a more direct approach at home that we started picking up any points. I do refer to his lack of communication ability as I consider this to be a disadvantage as a manager. Other than that my main point of reference is to his talent as a manager - or lack of it. What is the "good guy" thing anyway? Are Wenger, Ferguson or The Special One good guys or good managers?

Oh and I know if all three of them managed us together they could not have mustered a single point more that the "good guy". I know.:thinking about:

Where did he say that EVERY critic only refers to physique?

I can happily accept that some people are unhappy with AT, but I do find that more and more posts are refuting arguments that have not been put.

On one of the many recent threads (may be this one - can't be arsed to check), there were disparaging comments about those who saw AT as "the Messiah". Now I confess that I don't read every thread, but in what I have read, I've yet to see that.

A number of posters (myself included) have stated that he was put in a virtually impossible position last season (squad slashed, managerial inexperience, chaos in the Boardroom) and that consequently he didn't have a reasonable chance to show what he could (or couldn't) do.

You and a number of others disagree - and that's fair enough - but unless the intention is a bit of friendly WUMing, it'd be helpful to debate what people actually said.

Bloody hell is this debate tiresome. Nobody hates Thorn, nobody worships Thorn. Nobody entirely blames him for last season, nobody totally absolves him of it. Nobody's opinion ever changes and we end up with pages of the same waffle-sick of it.

He leaps fervently to his defence every time whatever arguments are put and with equal zeal regardless of the argument. There are very few (less than 5%) of his detractors who make such statements.

The post creates the impression this is a majority view - it is not.

I;ve noticed this too - also the hurling of needless insults on some sort of attempt to quell the growing unrest.

Personally - I agree with one of the earlier posters on another thread - AT has some of his family/friends on here trying to ensure fans don't call for his head - although the inevitable will eventually occur - my money is on this season.

Let's see who frequently these posters stand by thorn when we are bottom of league one - that will tell us something

Fair enough - but would you then accept the comment about the silly "Messiah" comments?

If it encourages cyclic debates like this to stop then I will make the attempt-especially when such debates begin to fill the forum.

This is one thread - hardly filling the forum - I also doubt the lack of your presence will encourage the debates to stop.

If your commenting on the thread why not honour the original post and simply state where you are on Thorn's reign - over the moon with being relagated perhaps - well personally, I am still very disappointed.

I've made my views on Thorn clear plenty of times. We had arguments like this all last season and it ends up pissing everyone off. It's a very tired and repeated debate.

I think it's only Thorn's apologists that get bothered to be honest. If your not on this thread to make a view in respect to the OP then why are you on this thread?

Take a bit of time to read my Thorn related posts if you like, you'll see I'm not much of a 'Thorn apologist'. I just think we're capable of a bit more than going over the same argument we have done for the last 6 months.

Correcting others' grammar, syntax and spelling really is a minefield.

Up until 1908 we used exactly the same technique as the Americans when using direct quotes. H.W. Fowler's The King's English is generally believed to have been the catalyst for change. "The prevailing [method] is to use double marks for most purposes, and single ones for quotations within quotations." (i.e. the American usage) He then went on to advocate changing this style to single quotation marks on grounds of logic, which he never actually explains.

The point of language is to communicate. If you understand what is being communicated, language has served its purpose. Pedantry is unnecessary.

Yes to an extent but there is a frustration from those of us who view as a liability that some of the posts supporting him are well over the top. Comments such as;

- He deserves a medal (no he is doing a job of his choice we reserve medals for war hero's)
- Sir Alex Ferguson could not have done a better job (disrespectful as it suggests being a hugely successful manager and all the skills and attributes that requires can be learnt in a few weeks)
- He has the most difficult job in football (really when a lot of people still support him post relegation - I think not)
- Boothroyd would have not won a single game with that squad (so ridiculous not even worthy of comment)
- The best manager in a decade (as above)

These have all been said in various guises over time and are to me so lacking in factual accuracy I feel compelled to respond. I accept we are lumbered with him but I think results will suffer as a consequence.

I think we should congratulate Clarrie, I have just taken the time to read through this entire thread and Clarrie is clearly the catalyst for keeping a tiresome argument going.

In recent weeks ive enjoyed coming on here to read threads linking us with players, people on trial, generaly possitive stuff...only to be bought back to the same old shit bya new poster who clearly wants to cause a 100 page regurgitation of a topic that has already been done to death!

Im not a Thorn supporter, I am a Coventry supporter. He is what we have as a manager now so I will support him for now and judge him based on what I see this season. Its all new, new league, new team, new backroom staff. If he fails instantly then of course my acceptance of him will dwindle.

In other words....bore off! ;)

A new concept! A coventry supporter you say?! How refreshing! And I couldn't agree more with your sentiments on the whole situation!

Well I am judging based on what I saw last season - why resort to personal insults with terms like 'bore off'. Just don't come on the thread.

So this is where the sad people hang out! You must live quite a vindictive existence to be carrying such a line of thinking this early-before pre-season!

I salute your "stick-to-itiveness". Aint no passion like hatred! Even when it is massively misdirected.

Can folk not just draw a line under the disaster that was 2011-2012. A combination of owners cutting costs too quickly, a manager still learning his trade and a poor and inexperienced squad got us relegated.
Hopefully this season we are now at a level where we have a semblance of a chance to compete financially, our young players have gained some valuable experience as should our manager and the new additions may actually prove to be good acquisitions in this new environment. I think its time for many City fans to put up or shut up and get behind what we have left with their money and their voices !!

Vindictive? Hatred? Your not talking about me with those words - I love everyone - doesn't mean I rate them though

Exactly. It should really be a clean slate now that AT has got some players in and we do have a decent squad compared to others in the league.

Exactly what I'm going....what's that then?

You mentioned if people aren't on the thread to reply to the OP then why bother being on the thread. Admittedly it's not just you but your last few posts have been nothing to do with the OP.

The reason BSB is tired of this subject is because it's been discussed, on here, dozens and dozens of times. Every time it results in the same conclusions and insults being thrown. It's tiring to discuss it now, or at least it's tiring to see a new thread with exactly the same subject appear on here again. The easiest thing would be to group all these threads together.

Sometimes it's better to just let sleeping dogs lie. If you'd been on this forum at any point last season you'd understand why threads like this irritate a good number of posters.

What a ludicrous statement. Yeah I'm Andy Thorn's Auntie...
