There's more awareness now too, places miles away, like Leicester ;) get their news to people faster, and it's more available. People can read now too to read the news, and also are able to watch TV, surf t'internet etc.

Read the old papers, and life has always been proper shit for some.

Actually, to stop yourself from being depressed, don't read 'em!

Violent crime as a whole has actually dramatically reduced since its modern peak in the early 1990s.

That said, specific Knife (or sharp instrument) crime appears to have bucked the trend in recent years.

Deprivation is still clearly the single major driver, but in an honest debate, you'd also have to look at culture & ethnicity, especially within communities that have a larger proportion that have fled from war-torn lawless failed states.

Dont get me wrong, things aren't great at the moment and there are issues that need tackling but to try and paint it as though the country is worse now than its ever been isn't true and it's not helpful. Murder rates were far higher at the start of the century.

Personally I would start by following the Scottish model of making knife crime a public health issue (that's a long term project),.but it had great success, as well as giving mandatory sentences for carrying a knife, none of this two strikes. Caught in possesion, jail.

Agree, everything should be on the table, though agenda driven bullshit should immediately be called out and shot down.

Just for the LOLs I think the Royal Mail should shuffle about all the postcodes in these areas. Confuse the fuck out of them.

My idea for a reality TV show:
Take gangs out of their area & swap them with gangs from another city.
So, for example, a bunch of skinny white hood rats from norris green, liverpool get dropped into Handsworth, Brum.
The handsworth gang get dropped into L11 and so on. Moss side vs. Bethnal Green. Easterhouse vs. Bell Green etc.
The gangs of equal numbers get issued with £100 cash total plus 1 phone. They have 2 weeks in which to survive & prosper. After 2 weeks, those that have made the most dough (less fines for any arrests incurred) win.
All winning & losing teams are then rounded up & put in a rollerball-esque decider. All survivors are then arrested, charged & sentenced by Timmy Mallet.

I actually had a similar idea. The usual fuck wits from the apprentice take on a group (Not neccessarily gang members) from an estate in the usual tasks.

I know who my money would be on.
Your idea could be a spin off, even throw some of the usual apprentice crowd in and drop them in somewhere like Braunstone or Cheetam Hill.

“Well Alan, this week I bought some old chairs from a charity shop and upcycled them making a total profit of £67”

Excellent work from the Inspire Team, and now, P1 Crew how did you get on?

“We stole 15 cars and bought half a key of coke, total profit £12,342”

Im not sure it was the same though was it although 70s and 80s was before my time.

Although I am a bit younger, I do know a fair amount of horrible bastards and I know it won't make sense but they did still have some sort of morals. Yes they might kick fuck out of you but generally there was a reason behind it rather than just postcode bruv.

There is no respect at all now for anybody, if you go in a nightclub and you saw the scrawny little pricks giving the bouncers loads because they know the bouncer won't do anything. When I was younger going out it was probably towards the end of the bouncers who would drag you round the back and give you a slap.

I still think a lot of it is down to parents too, far too eager to defend their "angels" who are out running drugs or carrying knives. The ones you see shouting at the police or teachers. The parents have no respect so the kids have no respect, the kids know the parents will back them regardless of what they do so they rinse it. If I got a bad report at parents evening I'd hide for a week, nowadays the parents blame the teachers rather than the kids.

Have also had a run in personally with people like it on a night out, absolute pussies but about 10 of them willing to jump on your head and use it like a football. No fucks given at all, send them to jail and they don't care. They will just deal drugs and stuff from the inside and come out richer than they went in.

There was no moral code back then it's absolute bollocks. There weren't as many stabbings admittedly though there were some.
The pubs had big thick pint glasses and heavy glass ashtrays which were regularly used as weapons. I remember someone breaking the mirror in Busters and attacking someone with a shard of the glass.

The pubs round by me were constantly kicking off and there was often serious assaults.
My kids went to the same school I went to and it had improved beyond recognition compared to when I was there at the end of the 70s start of the 80s. The place was fucking feral back then.
And we all know that the football was mental.

I think the city really improved in the 90s and has regressed a bit now and the gang and knife crime issue needs addressing but let's not make out it used to be utopia and now it's South Central L.A

Also I remember a kid getting shot in a drive by when I was at Uni 20 years ago so not sure this holds up particularly.

The live in Wood End had bullet holes in the wall and someone got dropped off the Riley Square tower block.

Like I said I was just going off the people that I would know and although have done some pretty bad things they wouldn't stab somebody for living in a different postcode. Owing them money, more than likely.

Even when I was at school in the 90's, I can only remember fist fights and I can't ever remember the 10 on 1 approach like you seem to get now.

Got to disagree here. I got chased out of places as a young teen for “being out my area” and vividly remember three of us aged about 15 finding ourselves up against around 30 lads of varying ages armed with sticks with nails in down prior deram field. Never ran so fast in my life. Also had a car full of lads pull up outside a mates house and chase three of us despite none of us having anything to do with any of them.

And I’m hardly some veteran of the underworld and Canley was hardly a particularly rough place compared to some.

It definitely happened, but you’d only hear of it if it happened to a mate. Now you’d have already read the FB post from someone’s Mum about it.

Yeah I guess so. Good point about social media though.

Im sure you were a bit of a c**t though so deserved it. ;) 😂

Did anything actually happen to you though or just chased? Yeah random chases happened a lot but never really got stabbed.

People had bases to protect and second hand porn mags they had found. Sticks with nails in are a bit different to what they are carrying in their man bags nowadays.

Same experiences around Hillfields, Holbrooks and Radford. Saw someone’s eye pop out of their head getting hit with a mallet when I was about 10 for example. Not in the news. That would be all over social media now. Saw a couple of people get stabbed.

As for the 80s some of the stories my dads got are mental. I never had an ounce of trouble going on the sesh the last 20 years in town.

You can argue either way really, but I sway more towards the news is instantly available.

I can remember people getting stabbed to death because of the colour of their skin.
I particularly remember Dr. Dharry getting stabbed outside our chippy.

I'm not saying no one had a moral code back then but to think everyone did is naive. Same as not everyone today is an out of control scum bag but there's always been out and out wankers.

I saw loads of 10 on one action years ago as well, it's not new.

Yeah I agree now thinking about it. Then add in the bandwagon of being on the internet and how rumours can spread instantly rather than just coming back from the pub with gossip.

Also can we not ban grime please. I like it when I’m in the car. Current favourite is one by D Double E about street fighter and its full of puns about the characters. Might sonic boom someone later.

it's like the programme we're discussing, the whole country gets to deep dive into the intricacies of crimes that happen at other ends of the country.
It's probably a good thing because it brings home the horror of it but it also whips up a bit of hysteria which is only natural when faced with the reality of crime of that nature.

This is the first time in my life I’ve been tempted to listen to grime.

Point being loads of Grime is a bit of a giggle.

He probably means Drill, which a lot of the time is essentially gangs calling each other out and generally being dickheads.

It's not new around there.
When I hit my teens and was let off the leash so to speak (I lived behind the Green Man, Hal Green Rd, so close to the Manor House, and therefore a short step to Wood End) me and a mate were chased off the estate by a group of older lads (15yo or so), one of whom was swinging a hatchet.
This was around '67.
Whether they'd have used it if they caught us is moot of course, but it was f scary, trust me.
There were some horrible scrotes around there by then.

My mum and stepfather used to go up to Riley Sq for bits and pieces until relatively recently. I always tried to warn her off, but she seemed to think it was still like it was when first built, when it was fairly calm.
Thankfully she can't walk that far now!

Certain areas were blighted by crime both petty and serious in the 1980s and 90s as a result of industrial decline and economic recession leading to a sense of hopelessness among the young.
We are back there again now as a result primarily of the 2008 banking crisis, though the devastating consequences have been compounded by the ridiculously harsh and damaging Austerity measures introduced in 2010 by Camerons coalition and then ramped up even further by the Tory government.
