So what do you think was the best way to use the jan budget ? On a holding player or a striker who can get us out of trouble ?

We brought in a striker with international experience in Jan on loan from a Prem team. He just doesn't seem to be very good or at the very least is severly lacking in confidence. Not a budget issue - a recruitment issue.

Also deflected from answering if/when Sheaf is picked over James it'd be clear proof of Sheaf being the better player.

It’s clear who the manager prefers let’s leave it there 😁

What I don’t get on these threads is how the majority of people can’t see that James is a much better player than Kelly and sheaf! Just is athletic ability and strength is on another level to Start with

I've got no problem with the view that James is a good player. Whether he was the *right* player to bring in during January is another question.

As said he had to bring him in as he didn’t fancy sheaf, soon as Kelly got injured everyone was calling for a replacement CDM that’s what robins done it just left not much budget for a striker hence why we got Gyo in,sheaf at £750k in my opinion is a waste of budget we haven’t got the luxury of bringing players in for development at that kind of money,if he doesn’t sort out how much time he wants on the ball & getting caught on the ball he won’t be above league 1 level

You didn't say shit, if Sheaf scores next week you will be banging on about how you rated him.

Just pipe the fuck down for a bit. You know fuck all and you don't need to show that in every single thread.

It was more to do with Kelly's experience and organising, as well as getting in the ref's ear, that people felt we'd miss and it was those we wanted replaced more than just 'a CDM'. Those are mainly why James was brought in.

Sheaf needs to improve but this year will have given him valuable lessons regarding the amount of time he'll get on the ball and with a pre-season under his belt as well as familiarity with the surroundings he may well kick on next season. Meanwhile James' wage demands would likely be far in excess of Sheaf's and negate that transfer fee, with his age working against the likelihood of getting a decent return in terms of a transfer fee.

He hasn't been brought in as a 'development player' but a first team squad member we hope will develop further, which is the same for pretty much all our signings. He's played in 28 games this season so it's not like he's barely featured. Do I think he's worth the rumoured £750k? At this stage probably not but teams like Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U etc also seem to get inflated prices for their youngsters just because of their name.

People were(are) more than willing for the club to spend more than that (plus a decent wedge on wages if rumours are true) on Walsh, who wasn't featuring for a club at this level, has only shown us what he can do at L1 level (and even then it took him a fair few games to find his feet and cost us a few goals losing the ball cos he wanted too much time) and has since been injured for the best part of a year.

I’m not the one who thinks sheaf offers more than Matty James you clown, even robins clearly doesn’t think sheaf offers more hence why he’s behind James 😁🤣

Would sheaf get in the Barnsley side ?

This year will give him valuable lessons on wanting too long on the ball you say ?

If you read the Doncaster fans forum when we signed him they all said he wanted Far too much time on the ball and for caught all the time he’s 22 still young he can improve but to think he offers more than Matty James is comical, robins thinks James offers more that’s why he is playing ahead of him...enough said

What a pleb, post after post questioning Robins decisions with an undercurrent of wanting him gone then when it suits he cites the very same man backing his judgement
Couldn't make it up

On this one he’s right 😆 James offers more than sheaf and I have a suspicion robins doesn’t fancy sheaf hence why we all wanted a replacement for Kelly when he got injured...some people think Sheaf will be a bargain at £750k I think we need out of that deal to use it better next season

“pleb” you’ve got a profile picture from the Goonies you mongol 🤡🥴🤣

Yes he would @Barnsley I’m sure will have something to say,

you know damn well sheaf wouldn’t get near that Barnsley side the one Matty James was labelled as their best player in years across their forum to say sheaf offers more is laughable Nick you know it too sheaf can’t get into our side he’s 4th choice

Their results and league position without him say otherwise. He clearly isn't their best player in years.

Fuck off to the Barnsley forum then, you obviously know more about them. Go and copy and paste people's views on there.

We played a central defender in midfield for the second half yesterday, because the lad who has replaced James, had a job done on him by the Millwall midfielders, that wouldn’t have happened to Matty with his experience, So yeah he’d walk into our side still, but only for 60 minutes per game.

During his time there he played 15 matches out of 23, so missed a third of their fixtures.

At the time Barnsley were 9th with 34pts from 23 games (1.47ppg). They'd won 10, lost 9 and drawn 4, scoring 27 and conceding 29.

Since he left they're now 7th, having played 9 and got 17pts (1.88 ppg) winning 5 drawing 2 and losing 2. They're 7 unbeaten and won 5 in a row.

So it seems they're not missing him at all. Plus if their manager thought that highly of him and felt he was having such an impact he'd have made sure he got him back for the remainder of the season. Not like we're going to be offering a massive amount more towards his wages. Fact they were willing to lose him and their form since suggests no, he wouldn't be getting back into that Barnsley line-up.

Cov fans are mental. Some heap praise on a useless centre forward like Biamou yet slate an actual quality footballer like James

@Barnsley just said he would walk into their side 🥴

Bottom line he’s better than sheaf and offers more sheaf would struggle to make their bench facts are robins clearly thinks James offers more as he’s ahead of sheaf

Given the opportunity in front of goal yesterday that 1. James had the nous to get into that position and not ball watch and 2. Had the class to dispatch what was a very difficult finish I am sure everyone would agree that they’d rather have had James pounce on that chance than Sheaf.

What we need is a little more experience and composure.
Case in point yesterday Osti got stamped on but rather than writhe around on the ground like he had actually been shot, his lack of experience told because he reacted and got himself a yellow card.

We need more players with the kind of football nous and cleverness that will make us secure in this division.

I know we footballing purists hate the gamesmanship but it’s that Kind of cleverness that is the main difference between Div 1/2 and the Championship/Prem.

Yes players are better, technically and physically the higher the league but the amount of times City’s naivety has cost us points this year is all down to a lack of this in out squad.

Yes Sheaf is a prospect but in this division and in his position we just don’t have the space to let him learn from his mistakes.

It's apples and oranges. You're talking about 3 different players, 2 in the latter stages of their careers whereas Sheaf is still learning the game and his confidence is a factor. James is the more creative of the 3 whereas Sheaf and Kelly are more effective in breaking up play. Kelly is a leader where James and Sheaf can be invisible for times. Think the only thing people can judge on them fairly is that they all have hair (though Kelly's is starting to fade ;) ), can kick a ball and all play in Sky Blue.

It's becoming increasingly clear that we have a appearance based obligation on sheaf... I also have a feeling that Robins is unwilling to play him as if we go down there's a decent sized fee to pay... If the unexpected happened and we are safe with 3 or 4 games left... You will see what Robins intentions truly are with sheaf

As it stands, it feels like he won't sign him

I don't understand this conspiracy theory, there's literally zero logic to it. He's made 7th most appearances of anyone in the squad & if there was a concern about hitting an appearance milestone why would you bring him on for 11mins v Reading when the game's already over & you have Jamie Allen as an unused sub?

Allen seems to have fallen out of favour, mind, and only seems to be being used when essential.

A reply to someone asking why Coventry haven't climbed the table since he joined:

" it could be that his qualities require other players of similar ability around him "

Confident lot but they don't rate us. Most of the posts in this Barnsley thread seem to be about different styles of clogs and how nice it is to not have to get up at 3am to go to the mill during lockdown.

Don’t understand this negativity towards Sheaf he’s okay and played a lot of games in a team being constantly altered for injuries. Let’s see how he fares playing with a full squad.
