KEOGH NOW EXPECTED TO EXIT

ANDY Thorn is pressing ahead with his plans to strengthen his Coven try City side as star defender Richard Keogh looks set to leave the Ricoh Arena.
The Sky Blues boss admits he's resigned to losing last year's player of the season after he was left out of City's 8-0 thrashing of Hinckley United on Saturday and not expected to travel on tour to Scotland today.

New signing Kevin Malaga * a ready made right-sided replacement * impressed alongside triallist and fellow Frenchman William Edjenguele, a left-footed centre-half who Thorn has hinted could be offered a contract as he looks to fill the void left by Martin Cranie.

“I think there's an air of inevitability about Richard,“ conceded the City manager, who will now switch his attention to drafting in two new strikers.

“That's how it is. He's a great lad and if he stays he stays, and if he goes that's business. All good clubs lose their better players at some stage and we'll just move on.

“I think everyone is resigned to it. If we are honest with ourselves, if a player goes into his last year of his contract and hasn't or won't sign an extension then from a business point of view that can't happen.

“But we've planned for that and we'll pick ourselves up. If it happens we wish Richard all the best and we move on and make sure we bring someone in as good as him.“

Keogh is understood to be at the centre of a three-way battle for his services by Cardiff * who have already made a formal approach * Leeds and Derby.

Cardiff would appear to suit the defender's personal circumstances given that it is close to Bristol, the home town of his new wife, while his best friend on and off the pitch last season, Cranie, is currently training with Leeds where he is trying to earn a contract at Elland Road.

Derby are also looking for a centreback after selling Jason Shackell to Burnley for £1.1million and Keogh is understood to be a target at Pride Park.

Meanwhile Thorn revealed he is looking to make more signings, saying: “We're desperate to bring in a couple of strikers. “That's a priority which we're working hard on and I am sure that will come because we all know we need players to stick the ball in the back of the net.

“It's important to get a spine first and strikers tend to take longer because they are hot property.

“But when we come back from Scotland there's a chance we could get a couple in. It is something we have planned and thought through all summer.

“I think getting the boys we have got in on free transfers so far shows that we have done some good business, so we'll continue to do that.“

As for Edjenguele's immediate future * the 25-year-old being available after leaving Greek club Panetolikos * he added: “That will stay in house until it is actually done but he's enjoying being with us and we're enjoying having him.

“We have kept it low key because things tend to get out and you can end up losing players. He's out of contract and he's a good lad who had done well in training with us.

“He's strong, got a lovely left foot and a bit of experience, and he's the right age as well. And I was pleased with him and Kevin Malaga at Hinckley. So hopefully he's one of two or three over the next couple of weeks.“

City headed up to Scotland today without striker Cody McDonald, who is staying to catch up on five days of fitness work he missed last week with a minor injury; Nathan Cameron, who is playing catch up from a knee operation, and Gary Deegan, who begins his pre-season fitness work after completing a two week suspension.

Triallist midfielder Steve Jennings will also not be travelling after suffering an injury in training but goalkeeper Joe Murphy will make the gruelling road trip after recovering from an Achilles problem. “Joe had a little jab in his Achilles because it was sore and he only started back running a few days ago but he'll play up in Scotland, no problem,“ said Thorn, who is not unduly concerned by centre-forward Stephen Elliott's shoulder injury at Hinckley.

“The boys who have missed the first couple of weeks of fitness work won't be coming with us to Scotland because they need to catch that up and then they'll be ready to join in when we get back.“

As for Saturday's eight-goal demolition at the Greene King Stadium, he said: “It all went according to plan. The score is not important, it's about what we get out of the game and we feel we got a lot out of it.“

City play Highland League club Brora Rangers tomorrow night in the first of three games north of the border.

Ah yes, nothing is said and he is at fault. Something is said and he is at fault. Rumours about that he has said something and he is at fault. Players get into the last year of their contract so get sold to bring money into the club before they go for free....AT's fault. Players leave at the end of their contract for free.....yes you got it......all the fault of AT

My contribution was not serious. It was merely making a double post, a triple.

Internet points and that.

I agree with this. Some of the criticism of AT is sub-humanly rationalized. It's poor. I personally like the guy, he has the un-enviable task of polishing shit.

Do you remember Thorn saying "Injuries are not a problem, we have Turner coming back"....Knowing that he had been sold to Cardiff a week earlier. A point that was backed up by Turner himself when saying "I've known that I was going to Cardiff 5-6 days ago".
Thorn had better not play poker anytime soon.
Apologies for repeating some posts..they show up as not being sent.

I can't help bug sympathise with him. And I have full trust that he wouldn't lie to us for no reason., what would he have to gain from that, of which you quoted? Sorry, but I think its a bit more than "he said this, then this happened".

It's not a case of "He said this, then that happened"
Turner was sold to Cardiff a week BEFORE Thorn said "Injuries are not a problem, we have Turner coming back."
Don't tell me Thorn wasn't told by SISU that he had already gone!!! Thorn knew all about it but decided to keep his mouth shut....Not unlike the Keogh situation. What did Thorn say a couple of days ago?......"As far as I'm concerned Keogh isn't going anywhere."
These are quoted facts, in the CET.

what is your problem? He has said it is inevitable thatKeogh will go! He is planning for that, what more can he do. Can you not justbe happy that we scored 8 goals and the lads are looking sharp, the new boysseem okay and if the youth can be used less than last year they will do well inLeague 1. why you are dragging up the Turner transfer just to have a pop is beyond me
In truth we all knew Keogh would go, we hoped he wouldn’tbut it is no surprise AT is no different

Hahahaha !

This ! Although some fans need to wake up and realise we're in League One and essentially were shit, I'm sure Harry Redknapp isn't holding out until we come knocking. Thorn is about our level, and after the positive things that ALL of our new signings have said about him I'm willing to give him a chance next season

I just wish a decision will be made sooner rather than later, if he's staying then brilliant, if not then lets get signing someone else.

Correct everyone knew he would be leaving it is no surprise and I can't believe anyone really expected him to stay.

Yes Thorn did say that about Keogh but it wasn't a couple of days ago !!!!!
It was more like whilst we were in the embargo.
Also before it has been anounced we got in on trial a replacement and signed job done !!!
Whats your problem ?

The local paper in Derby suggest they may be signing him.

In 12 months our CB position has lost Keogh, Cranie, McPake and Turner and we've been relegated.

Yes we still have an inconsistent Cameron, an injury prone Wood and some unknown Frenchie who has barely ever played but "looks awesome" on the basis of a pre-season friendly against a non-league side.

Excuse me for being a bit untrusting on this one, but I would say that an experienced centre half is an absolute must. Preferably a leader and preferably a british player who has played in this league before and knows what it's all about.

Rob,

Great post and spot on.

Is it not time to get behind the whole team. If we get off to a good start then confidence in the team will grow. Was not long ago we would of been happy just to have a team to follow for the coming season. Thorn must have been in complete turmoil not knowing if he had a team or not. I think he has done well under the circumstances.

I reckon they have set a price (probably 1 million)
and there is so much interest that they are anticipating somebody will come up with it....

Someone a bit like keogh rob? He was never going so stay, shitsu can't wait to cash in on yet another asset.

What if Keogh doesn't want to sign a new contract? We keep him for a season and then let him go for free like we have done with so many players before. At least we'll get some money for him and £1 million is a good fee for a player on the last year of his contract.

So the other option was to let his contract run down and leave on a free. I'm more then happy for him to leave this summer as long as a replacement is brought in.

there are two elements to the costs of players to a club
  1. wages
  2. tansfer fee - amortised over the length of the contract

Since Keogh was only 88k 2 years ago he will be a pretty cheap player to keep on the books...

If he gets to the end of his contract, as did, Craine he can just walk out of the door and we get back nothing...
Since his performances have been noteable he appears to have generated a good deal of interest from other clubs.
AT appears to have been able to find a few good prospects to replace him and a valued as his performances were for us last term, no one is irreplaceable!

Kay serra, serra.....
