Changing my career to become a self defence expert. After Marty’s comment interest in my classes is going to skyrocket.

I know you were, implying it was a stupid idea, it's the most logic step for people to take.

It’s a good idea though. Probably wouldn’t say it to someone after they’ve been attacked or anything, but of course it’s a good idea. Shouldn’t be needed in an ideal world, but it’s where we are.

It is a good idea. But so is a civil society having a frank discussion about what they can do to stop it happening after a quite steep increase.

I know this is a proper out there concept in today's world, but shouldn't you take care of your own safety? if you're scared to leave the house after dark then take self defense lessons.

Do you get how much training the average woman would need to take on the average untrained man?

You think people should dedicate years of their life to becoming martial arts experts so they can go to the shops?

Dedicate? It's like 2 one hour sessions a week, 6 months will get you to a good place. Ideally you want more but until we live in utopia you need to be able to look after yourself.

I'm 5ft 1in, weigh 9 stone and am retired. I don't think self defence skills would protect me very much.
Though it may help me take out the old geezer who lets his dog foul outside my gate, so might be worth a go.

You sound like an easy target, you probably need it more then anyone.

No Grendel. And you know they aren’t because you aren’t as stupid as you make out. If she was part of the community or we sent it to her repeatedly then yes.

Here, from the CPS, the definition of harassment. Feel free to waste your time trying to back up your ridiculous assertion

What sort of training to you reckon Oakey would need to batter an average bloke in his 20s? What martial arts would you recommend?

Here’s a report from a young healthy woman looking to learn self defence. “ While Krav Maga was a terrific workout—my calves were on fire the day after my first class—I discovered that it takes years to learn how to knock a gun from a mugger’s hand or fight off multiple assailants.”

Maybe not harassment but definitely offensive and demeaning.

It's not to batter anyone, you're trying to cause as much damage in a fraction of a second to be able to get away. Try getting out and actually trying something instead off scouring the internet, and talk from your own life experience instead of someone else's.

You have no idea what my experiences are. The idea that all women should learn martial arts or it’s their own fault for not wanting to get attacked going about their day is some hot bullshit. It’s some pathetic fantasy land born out of some ridiculous world view and not the real world at all.

I know lots of men and women who have had six months or more martial arts training and couldn’t defend themselves to the level of “do as much damage as you can and run off”. For a start most men are significantly faster than women, so where exactly will they get off to? You’ve been watching too much TV if you think after 20 odd sessions a retired woman could fight off a 20 year old man.

It is a real world view that there's bad people in the world and you need to be able to protect yourself, 99.9% will never need to use it but if it makes someone more confident to walk the streets, then do it.

It's more like 50 sessions, you will get to a good place after 6 months. But you will need more like I said. It's something I think should be taught in schools anyway.

I've never done boxing but I can imagine even after 6 months of training you'd be able to throw a powerful punch.

Do men honestly think women don't have discussions about who they would do as well? It's OK saying such and such is demeaning but ever worked in an office full of women? The "banter" seems to work both ways alike, we probably see more of it as we are the majority blokes.

Christ, it's been over the radio that Cbeebies are getting a "hunk" to read a story on Mother's Day.

The whole "every woman should learn martial arts" is bullshit as well.

No way a middle aged woman.can get anywhere near the level required to fend off a large percentage of men

Most men would have trouble with someone like Levi Bellfield.
You'll be trying to justify trans women.in women's sport next!

That's one for the wokies, I'm a firm believer that men are bigger faster stronger and women can't compete with men.

That is true, most would be in serious trouble if he cornered you. Nice use of the extremes though.

I used to do a bit of martial arts
Sometimes men.would spar women.
I can only think of one woman who could hold her own.
I sent my youngest daughter to MMA. She couldn't d3fend herself against most boys/men.
I still think it's worth doing but a bit of martial arts training is far from a guarantee of safety for anyone.

They had Tom Hardy and now it's the chap from Bridgerton. My Cbeebies rule is my daughter's not allowed to watch Bing Bunny, and my wife's now not allowed to watch the stories.

Yes locker room banter is what it is - nice

It's distasteful certainly, and childish. A criminal offence though? Not a chance. Talk like that goes on everywhere from both sexes.

I'll spank myself. The comment about 'eating an apple through a tennis racket' threw me off, until I googled her name and almost spat out my dinner.
