Ireland held by the galacticos of Qatar, still no win for the Father Ted tribute act

My bad Portugal must have literally equalised on halftime

They won 3-1 in the end, but imagine if that was England. We just need to relax a bit. Team could be quite different come the Euro's, we have a chance but think we are too weak defensively personally.

Not that I disagree with you point. Based on the last few tournaments and competitive games I’d put us behind France, Portugal, Holland and Belgium. It might also be that 3 of them are in the same group, so one is likely going out.

Germany aren’t what they were and Italy are rarely backed by the bookies these days.
Italy have gone through a transition period but i'd say they have as much chance as England as winning the Euros.

People seemingly happy with a limp and toothless performance against the mighty Albania.

We are miles away from winning the Euros, defence and midfield nowhere near the level needed.

I wouldn’t say miles away but there are better teams on paper. I’d consider us dark horses though purely because our whole campaign is near enough all in England

I can't remember England ever having such a poor defence as they have over the last few years .
And midfield centrally is a problem too..
Every person quoted to play central midfield is more an attacking midfielder so we lack genuine central midfielders too .

Can't see us winning anything

Added to that we've got Gareth at the helm who has a dreadful record against good sides

It's better to have a weak defence rather than a weak attack.

We have the hight attaching quality options I can ever remember yet we still seem to set up glad half empty.

We can win games and tournaments with a poor defence, we just need to go a bit Kevin Keegan and outscore the opposition.

We can win the Euros, we just need to set up correctly, but struggling to see that happen

Nonsense, we were firstly stronger in the 2000s and also defence wins cups. Other teams will work on ways of shutting us down and we can't do the same to them.

I can't name many sides that have won much with a shite defence tbh

I don't understand why Stephen Kenny is getting so much stick. A 3-2 loss to Serbia, 0-1 loss to Luxembourg and 1-1 draw with Qatar are better results than the level of that side. He's got them punching if anything.

The Republic is in a really dire place right now footballing wise

They haven't won a match since September 2019

He scored 43 goals in 68 games in the two seasons prior to the '98 World Cup. The
squad also had Djorkaef & Zidane regularly starting and Henry, Pires & Trezeguet on the bench.

Hardly shite.

What about a shite attack?

Greece when they won the Euros offered virtually nothing going forward......They scored 7 goals in 6 games & won the tournament....

I remember their progress well as I'd drawn them in the pub raffle.....was gutted at the time.....and then, slowly but surely watched them park the bus & win 1-0 on 5 occasions.

Masterclass of tactical nous playing to their squad strengths.

We saw him play in the premier league, he was really shite.

Henry was misfiring left winger and Trezeguet was a 21 year old with single figure caps.

...and on the flip side of that, the Brazil side of the 1982 WC were simply awesome in attack......with a shambolic sunday league attitude to defence.

Outside of Ronaldo who is a class above every other player bar one, Portugal are bang average. as CJ said, they won 1 game in Euro 2016.

Losing to Luxembourg at home is not punching for anyone. That result in itself should have seen him sacked.

They’re far better now and I’ll probably be putting a few quid on them to win it. Best centre half in the world with Bruno and Bernardo in front of him in midfield.

Who is the world's best centre half ?
Because he's not Portuguese

Anyway this was Portugal in 2016, a pretty solid side to be fair... View attachment 19388
That side is pretty shit to be honest. The centrehalves combined age was over 70. The RB was a LB playing out of position. Joao Mario shite, William Carvalho shite, and Nani playing upfront whilst being over the hill. They had Eder coming off the bench who wasn't getting a game at Swansea.

Dias isn't the best cb in the world but they they have a good number of quality players now

Yea but for example maldini played until he was 180 alone and I would have still have had him over what we had in 2002

And you'd have ramos over Maguire now too

When you look at France in 98 , its easy to see why they were so successful and that's because they didn't let in many ...2 goals all tournament because they had this infront of the keeper Screenshot_20210331-145337_Google.jpg

Lets be honest the difference between Carvalho and Maldini is night and day
Well ofcourse , you'd take ramos over any of our centre halves just for this tournament wouldn't you ?
Age isnt a big deal to an extend over a few matches at a tournament ... if you're good enough you're good enough

Course I would, but I was simply saying that that portugal defence was shite and ours is stronger imo.

I don't think Pepe and carvalho were worse than Maguire and stones is what I'm saying ... they were better players

Carvalho was world class Albeit he was coming to the end of his career , an outstanding career too .

Best premiership defensive record in history with Terry and makelele infront in 2004/5

Stones is better than Carvalho was (at that point in his career), Shaw/Saka/Chillwell all better than Guerreiro and Walker/Trent/James/AWB all better than Vierinha

Are you joking about stones , il give you the right full backs
Carvalho had won the champions league , and had just been part of a Chelsea team that conceded 15 goals all season when he was stones age

He was one of the best defenders in the world at that time

I'm not entirely convinced that guerriero is any worse than Shaw, Chilwell or saka either .
