I think extending Kelly’s and McFadzean sends out the right message to, say, 29 year olds (and I’m looking at you M James) who might be looking to sign with us.

A 29 year old player has lots to offer but might want to stay in one place for more than one season (may have kids for example) and knowing that they may get 2,3,4 years is more reassuring than signing for a Champ or even lower prem club who may just bin you after a year meaning that you are 30 and then looking for a club.

Continuity is an over rated virtue. One of the features of the last four years has been the almost total lack of it. Each year Robins has in effect built a brand new team - last season with 4 new loans plus Hamer & Walker it was bound to be, So that's 6/10 regular outfield players. Not one acquisition from the first season in L 1, is in the match day squad (Baka was the last).

All three are not good enough for the top half of the championship. You might as well keep them because we can't afford a complete team upgrade, but this announcement is not a cause of celebration, more a statement of our financial weakness.

Kelly should be 'squad' this year, and ideally (although I suspect not) so should Hyam. The case for MacF I get, let's hope his legs can do one more year. I do worry about the state of the back 3 with Osti gone.

You’ve missed the point. The bulk of that squad were still under contract. In fact, I think of that list only Baka’s contract was technically up last summer but we had a year in our favour. That is why there was continuity between the two seasons - very little opportunity to manoeuvre.

This season is different. We had some reasonably high-profile deals expiring but the manager has chosen to renew most of them. Not sure I agree with the decisions but he’s better placed to judge than me.

The starting lineups year-to-year have tended to look quite significantly vary, though.

Not sure you can build a squad of genuine Championship quality players on frees even before you consider how it would impact the wage bill.

I take your point on the whole ‘rip it up and start again’ but if I said I wasn’t disappointed at the relative lack of ambition I’d be lying. Said consistently, trim the squad numbers, slight increase on wage bill overall, and focus more on quality over quantity. If Kelly is staying (which he obviously is) then he should really be 4th choice at best.

Think MR has done what he can in releasing players topping up the budget and re signing the key players whilst maintaining the core of a happy squad.Its still going to upset some fans because they want more changes .but now it's about who comes in and I'm sure that most of us as will MR will be more than happy the squad will be happy to help us finish higher in the championship next season .pusb

Baby steps. Still think establishing ourselves is the more realistic goal, and a second season struggle is more probable than a surge up the table. If we finish in a similar position next season (hopefully a tad higher) it will still have been a great season. Improve the squad each window.

The three of them are solid, dependable and I imagine good for the dressing room/squad. They'll have an important part to play off the field as well as on it.

The best model I see is how Mourinho used to start and that's two players for each of his 11 spots and a few on the fringe from youth/development. Players know where they are then and I imagine with suspensions, injuries and form there will be many times when that 4th choice is expected to step up and perform as happened this season. Some capable experience is a good thing and continuity or not, they need to have the right quality and blend.

I trust the management team to get it right. The key will again be in the quality of loan signings and if we can get Osti back (or similar) with a decent keeper and a top drawer centre forward then we'll be more than fine. Big If of course, but the key spine positions will make all the difference.

I think it's unrealistic to expect us to overhaul the entire team in one summer transfer window. Players like Hyam, Kelly and McFadzean, while perhaps not the best players we could get at this level, have proven themselves useful to the team and renewing all of them is the right call imo.

Given our injury situation this year I think trimming the squad isn't necessarily a great thing. Sure, I want quality over quantity but we also need to have the numbers to allow for eventualities. We had a few players this season who I think looked they could do with a rest and we couldn't give them one.

There are examples such as if we can bring in one better player in exchange for Biamou and Baka then great. Same wih Jobello/Hillsner/Kasta who if we could offload to bring in one better quality then fine. Similarly with Shipley and Allen. They're largely going to be bit part players.

But I'd be more reluctant to do the same with Godden and Walker for example. Not to say I think they're irreplaceable - Godden's injury record is a worry and Walker is a good finisher but can seem a bit of a passenger in most other aspects. But to get rid of both for one is a big risk because we'd be relying solely on that signings for goals and injuries or a loss of form would be a problem because we'd have no replacement.
