I don't think it's as a makeweight. It's just CM would have a lot of competition if we sign Walsh as well. I think the consensus would more be to not sign Sheaf in favour of Walsh. There would be the option to switch to Walsh instead of James as a target but I think the experience the latter has and the influence he was beginning to have towards the end of the season that probably wouldn't be great. Given James' wages etc he'll probably get a few offers and possibly a better offer elsewhere and he may not join anyway, in which case Walsh would be a good alternative.

The Hamer thing is more to do with potential fees from it. Let's say we got £5m for him which we could put towards a ST, CB, AM, GK and/or LWB. It might give us the funds to pursue three of those, maybe more. Given we could get someone to potentially replace Hamer for free would that be better for overall squad balance?

Got to get the balance right though. I don't think a Hamer/Walsh pairing would get the best out of both of them, similar to when it's Kelly/James imo.
Assuming we play with 2 pivots you'd want James/Sheaf/Kelly alongside Walsh/Hamer.
The 5 of them gives you tremendous balance and if you want to play 3 across there you're well stacked too.

Interesting I’ve just seen a Bristol City fan post that he has heard from a reliable source that one of their released players is joining Cov, and it isn’t Walsh. Surely Patterson?

Thought he was going to get £20k a week. Not here he won’t

They are gutted he’s not staying. Apparently offered a new deal and rejected so there will be a compo arrangement.

We will definitely try to get Walsh
Whether we succeed will depend on who else is in for him and what they can offer
This is a season like no other though so money is likely to be tighter than in the past especially for players coming back from long term injury
Surely we’re in the drivers seat though. He loved his time here, already knows his way around, knows the manager trusts and playing style suits him, fans adore him.

Could maybe suggest he's got something lined up. Its a bit of an unknown what the market will be like this summer with the impact of covid on finances so to turn down a contract he must be confident there's other options.

People saying sell Hamer is absolutely ludicrous it’s so frustrating. We always moan about selling our best players and we’ve got a player who could be a top player for us next season and people are calling for him to be sold.

I’d love to sign Walsh but definitely not at the expense of losing Hamer!!
Quite right mate.

If we bring in Walsh to replace Hamer or James we are clearly weakening the midfield in my view. It seems we are obliged to keep Sheaf (which in my view is not a bad thing) and we also have Kelly. That being the case I don't see where Walsh would fit in this team.

Hamer showed in the first half of last season that he is definitely a top Championship player in ability and potentially a Premier league player. So far we don't know whether Walsh can be effective in the Championship and he has been injured virtually the whole time since last March.

The only scenario where it works to bring him in is we we decide to weaken the midfield to strengthen elsewhere.

Would be very surprised if Robins hasn’t had a word with him at some point about returning.

Paterson can go somewhere else, I’ll have Walsh. 👍🏻

Would love to get Walsh back. Perhaps only for a season initially given the concerns around his fitness, but for me he was our best player in the L1 promotion season.

He's had a season where he's been unlucky with injuries. It's not persistent injury problems.

I suspect Hamer will go because he wants to and not because we want him to, but if he didn’t we’d still need someone who can play his role when he’s unfit/out of form and Walsh is perfect.

If they’re both fit and in form then a diamond (🤢) or a three man midfield would fit them in nicely.

Both very different players to Kelly/Sheaf/James IMO.

If Walsh comes, we'd want to make sure we had cover anyway, given his past year of fitness.

That being said, Eccles could be the cover for next year, with a view to stepping up to be regular first choice the season after?

Eccles doesn’t have the drive for me. Walsh and Hamer both bring the ball forward and are a goal threat, I’ve not seen that from Eccles yet.

I think recently in u23 he has brought the ball forward more often and more effectively

What about fans' and players' player of the season, Callum O'Hare? Keep or sell ?;)

What i find odd here is people questioning his fitness whilst applauding giving Jones a new contract
🤷‍♂️
Because we have already invested in Jones and another year on the contract he will be on is peanuts.

Walsh will have been on much higher wages at Bristol.

Would be absolutely buzzing with Walsh coming back. He was head and shoulders above in L1 and I have no doubt he would be a class player in the Champ too. He's young, knows MR, the system and would be a smart investment.

And others saying they are concerned about the amount of midfielders we have or could have, we need better quality and strength in depth and those who fall down the pecking order (Allen) I'm sure will be moved on.

An unnamed Championship club bid for him in January and it was rumoured to be us.

If it was then it's hard to imagine we won't be in for him again on a free.

Been reading the Brizzle forum. They're disappointed to see Walsh leave. There was a rumour of a player bragging he'd got £20k per week to someone recently and so they're assuming it's him. If it is, I doubt he's coming here. Many of them also believe he'll end up at Ipswich. Surely we're more attractive than them just now.
