I can’t see how the stats back that up unless there was a huge turn down in jabs from older people. How many have been vaccinated twice now - is it up to 20% yet?

Yeah it’s now over 20% - in most cases the gap between booking a vaccine and actually having it administered is around 4 or 5 weeks for those under 40 but then a 4 week gap between the vaccines.

The truth is though is it not that 12 million people have been fully vaccinated but there are actually 13 million in Italy who are over 65

As said before, I think there are larger numbers of older people not getting it, which is bizarre.
Keep in mind most over 65s are having AZ - most over 65s/under 75 I know are coming up to their 2nd jabs now.
I think first dosage is around 40% - by the end of July it’ll be looking much better.

Mentioned it before on this thread but there’s also a precedent for vaccinating those most likely to spread as a priority. It’s how the world eradicated smallpox. The WHO started targeting the groups most likely to be be spreading it than the groups most vulnerable. The most vulnerable in the U.K. have now been vaccinated or at least offered the opportunity. Let’s change tact and start vaccinating those most likely to spread. The younger age groups.

It's a bit after the horse has bolted at this point but I think only the Philippines went deliberately for this strategy. Haven't looked to see how it turned out for them.

I think I read the other week that they’re missing their targets but that’s an issue with take up rather than availability of the vaccine. Think they’re considering making it mandatory.

Seems like a range of factors but to be honest as we now know that vaccination is better at preventing serious illness than outright infection, the strategy most countries have gone for seems right. If my fully vaccinated CEV friend still somehow transmits the virus to me, I may well not even notice-if I'm fully vaccinated and transmit to him when he's not, it would probably end up worse

One positive of this latest travel situation is that flights have dropped quite a bit. My despatch to Amsterdam is delayed by a couple of weeks, so I'm going to work from Spain for a fortnight or so on my way out.

Think I'm going to shut myself off from the world for a while.

I need to go to The Hague as part of my work visa stuff, and due to various delays I've been pushed back a few weeks.

All this sunshine has made me decide to take a working holiday with the time. Spain have no quarantine and as I won't be coming back to the UK I kind of circumvent it.

Yep likewise.

A few serendipitous consequences have come out of taking the chosen route .
Had the young been dosed first take up might have been affected via hesitancy over clots .
The young are getting the superior vaccine.
6000 more lives saved they say.
Older folks became the Guinea pigs rather than young healthy folk .

That isn't the be all and end all though is it? Pressure on the NHS is the point I think, but if the jabs are preventing serious illness hopefully that won't be an issue.

Out of interest does that apply to crowds at football stadia - Italy are still quoting 25% capacity for the Euro games

I’m referring to Veneto rather than the whole of Italy - I think there will be around a third of regions with the same level.
Those remaining will be with minimal restrictions still (I think the equivalent of what England currently is).

Cases lead deaths by two/three weeks. How do you not know this yet it’s been the same since the start? If two/three weeks post cases rising deaths aren’t then we’re good. Cases are an early warning that’s why the concern.

It does look good so far, but throughout the pandemic we’ve been too optimistic generally and got bit on the arse. Makes no odds anyway, the entire point of the five week gap between restrictions lifting was so we had all the data in to make a judgement.
