He had to take a break from football for a while as he was struggling mentally and physically

'For my mental and physical health I needed to take a break' - Thomas explains absence

Good for him. I’m sure some people will treat this kind of admission like he’s been committed and write him off for good, but it shouldn’t be much different to how we see a player coping with a physical injury. Sounds like the Barnsley manager hasn’t exactly been considerate in dealing with him, and while I doubt he’d fit into our current style, there might be a good player in there one day.

I liked Thomas too. I was surprised he didn't make more of an impact at Barnsley. I thought he was great for us and a cut above League One. With the right club and in the right circumstances, that might still be the case.
We’ve got 5or6 players that are good enough for the championship but not quite good enough to be first team regulars in our team. They’d piss it into some championship sides, but because they’re not good enough for a starting place in our team, other championship clubs won’t touch them so they’ll probably end up a level below. Thomas is one of them .

People really forget that Thomas carried us for the first half of that first season back in L1. He was literally our only attacking threat for a large number of games. Having him in the Champ as a backup for COH wouldn't be bad at all.

It also helps not to rely on one player going the whole season without injury, which somehow he managed this time even though everyone else was dropping like flies. We need a squad, not necessarily just 11 good players

Luke Thomas, Patrick Schmidt, and Marcel Ritzmaier all went out on loan last season they would’ve kept Rotherham up. I’m convinced of it.

Any idea what issues Thomas has had at Barnsley/Ipswich ?

I remember his name got dragged through the mud by an angry female re: cheating, whilst he was with us on loan.

It’s not all it’s cracked up to be, heartbreaking being beat in playoffs pal.
We wouldn’t know. The only time we have been in the playoffs we won them

It's not all doom and gloom. If you think we have Kelly who has proven he can do a job for us, sheaf pretty much signed who may or may not be quality or shite (must admit I'm not sure which) plus Eccles coming in now who did really well and will be a squad player, plus hamer assuming he doesn't go who should have benefited from his first season in England and a rest.

Add in another cm and we are okay there. James, Walsh maybe not but time and time again MR has replaced quality with quality

Would be pretty worrying if we miss out on James, especially given that it sounded like a permanent deal was basically agreed when he signed on loan. Add in potentially missing out on Walsh too and it gets a bit concerning. We need to sign 7/8 players this window, would be nice to hear something a bit more concrete soon.

Agree, but at the same time I'm sure the club are working hard on it. We have reinvented the side each summer under Robins and if he has to do it again this time there's not many better suited to the task

…It’s hardly concerning: Walsh hasn’t played for a year and we’ve done ok without him.

Please face facts Cardiff or Swansea want a free agent they get him. Players like Ohare are almost unique. James will accept the best deal for himself and he’s a very good player,

We will move on to other targets

I assumed that James was just using us as a place to get back to fitness to then have his pick of offers in the summer. No harm with that for both parties.

Absolutely. Pretty sure robins hoped james would sign but I personally think the most impressive part of his character is his realism and working with what he has.

Of course it would be good if he did but we know that if a club offers a free agent £20k a week we cannot and should not try to compete with it. The truth is we do not have the financial muscle to compete in this league so need to consistently produce greater than the sum of our parts which there's always a decent chance we might not manage to do.
