We shouldn’t have made such concrete plans before everyone was vaccinated really.
I'm not one to defend the government but June 21st was never set in stone and they aren't the ones who labelled it freedom day.
You can still see the roadmap published on February 22nd on the government website and it clearly states "Step 4 which will take place no earlier than 21 June".
There are 4 conditions that have to be met to go to step 4.
The vaccine deployment programme continues successfully
Evidence shows vaccines are sufficiently effective in reducing hospitalisations and deaths in those vaccinated
Infection rates do not risk a surge in hospitalisations which would put unsustainable pressure on the NHS
The assessment of the risks is not fundamentally changed by new variants of concern.
You'd struggle to argue that those 4 conditions have been met.
I totally get BSB's argument that an event where everyone is vaccinated or tested is safe to proceed but aren't we then into 'vaccination passport' territory which many people on this thread have stated should not even be considered as an option and wouldn't be accepted by the public? Although there doesn't seem to have been too many complaints about it being used at test events.
If we go down that road the other issue is how it is implemented. The likes of Wembley and Edgbaston will be working hand in hand with local health authorities and will be closely monitored. Not sure you can say the same would be the case at someone's wedding for example so are you just working on trust and hoping nobody will break the rules?
