It's a worry that both Rice and Phillips are both carrying a yellow but I definitely wouldn't want to replace both. Probably Hendo for Phillips, if rice is booked then Phillips can do that sweeping role next to Henderson should we make it to the semi.

Definitely a back 4 again though. Attacking wise I'd like us to go:

Kane
Grealish - Mount - Sterling

See if Foden has more impact of the bench.

I’d probably sit Rice for this game - he’s played more minutes this season and is more likely to pick up a yellow in his role than Phillips. And if one of them does miss the semi, I’d rather have Henderson play Phillips’ role than Rice’s.

The yellow card rules are ridiculous in this tournament IMO. I think it’s unlikely they’ll get booked in any case, so it’s likely a worry over nothing, but isn’t it nice to feel able to have these kind of selection dilemmas ahead of a quarter final?

If you were really going for it you'd play Henderson and Mount in the middle to rest them both.

Sir Gareth would never though.

I think he might revert to a back four tomorrow in order to include another attacking player. I would like to see Sterling, Grealish, Foden behind Kane, but I imagine he will bring Mount in.

He might drop one of Rice/Phillips because of the suspension risk, but not sure which and not ideal if Henderson isn't fully fit. And I can't see him starting Bellingham.

Looking forward to it though, by now hopefully expectations are not for us to go gung ho, but I am hoping he lets the brake off a little more tomorrow, at least with the front 4, as we will need creativity to break them down.

The team mostly picks itself, I’d start the following in 4-2-3-1:

Pickford
Walker
Stones
Maguire
Shaw
Henderson
Rice
Sterling
Mount
Foden/Grealish
Kane

Good opportunity to get Henderson to start game and be a bit more direct in that 4-2-3-1 shape. Phillips is a higher yellow card risk than Rice and Maguire (based on Prem stats this season). If we’re ahead comfortably (2 goals), it may be a good idea to replace Rice and Maguire with Bellingham and Mings if they’re not on yellow cards already.

Personally, I would like to see Sancho get some game time too and wouldn’t be against starting him.

Predictions for tonight’s games?

Fancy the Italians to edge out the Belgians by a solitary goal and Spain to ease past the Swiss 3-1.

Big ask for the Swiss to repeat their last heroics , especially without Xhaka who was easily the man of the match in that game
I fancy Italy , my pre tournament pick, their defenders know Lukaku and with KDB being a doubt who's going to unlock the mean Italian defence ?

I feel like Italy will comfortably dispatch of Belgium, not at all convinced by their defense and apart from Lukaku their stars look knackered. I recon a controlled 2-0. shame as if England can get through the other side of the draw i definitely think the Italians style would suit us least.

Swiss missing Xhaka is huge, Spain should have enough. 3-0

have a feeling the Czechs will prove a step too far for the Danes, close game but i see them edging it. 2-1

Not even going to try predict England Ukraine. feels like we should be too strong but then we have been in situations where we are heavy favorites and just failed to create anything and been picked off. not as nervous as Tuesday but still very edgy. big test

Don't know, did he have an "England - The Council - City - In that order" flag?
Can't say I noticed that. However he does have an alter ego of 'Buster the dog'. Which consists of a costume finished with a large head of an English bull terrier. This apparently is how he's trawled Europe for the last few qualifying campaigns, collecting donations for various kids charities. This was his main gripe over the exclusion of travelling English supporters.
If you're Buster/C.J., drop us a line, we'd love to hear from you!

Spain 2 - 1 Switzerland. Spain will have too much, swiss aren't going to not win a knockout game in 70 years then do 2.

Italy 1 - 2 Belgium. Italy haven't been tested at all yet, dire opposition and struggled into extra time against Austria, even a weakened Belgium will win.

Czechia 1 - 1 Denmark. I think this will be really tight and maybe pens, nothing between them.

England 3 - 0 Ukraine. Ukraine struggled past Sweden in extra time, England competent, structured and professional.

Has anybody yet worked out who the hell gains anything from the offside flag only going up when the passage of play has stopped?

I don’t know if I hadn’t paid attention to Spain or what but they look really good so far- fast and fluid

Spain much the better side but potential weakness at set pieces and a fast counter as they play a v high line.
