I’m no expert at all but virus’ are like any life form they like to continue to exist so it serves no useful purpose to kill it’s host

So I’m hoping.

My personal opinion is that we will be locked down again as hospitals are overwhelmed, probably some time between October and February

The don't really control the mutations though

This is an interesting article, from both the perspective of the headline, and other content within.

Accurate article and what I heard to be honest, many others in media etc looking for someone to blame will hear and see what they want to. By all accounts Whitty was supportive of the end of restrictions whatever people might have seen last night.

These aren’t black and white decisions, there is nuance, risks, pros and cons to every one of them. I’d imagine with hindsight they may even wish the virus has spread more widely, gradually last summer but again that’s easy to say now.

This paragraph hits the nail on the head for me. Let’s not make excuses for people that ‘don’t understand’ or are struggling with ‘mixed messages’ etc. The advice is clear, the only difference is that rather than certain things being illegal there is a higher degree of personal responsibility

“If we’ve come through 18 months of Covid and people are still not persuaded to change their behaviour, they are probably a group that are in denial for their own reasons and it may be very hard to modify their behaviour. It’ll be for the silent and sensible majority to take the lead,” he said.

I would personally have kept face coverings on the tube as mandatory but If the mask wearing is still at 70% like that polls posted suggest, then I doubt the additional 30% (many of whom might take regular tests, some of which wouldn’t wear masks at all or properly, many might be exempt or double jabbed and likely to reduce transmission etc) would make a huge difference anyway

I’ll continue to wear mine in crowded places, more for others than for myself, but if I saw someone not wearing one, that’s their call. I can either leave them to it or move away.

ps I wouldn't be surprised if face coverings become mandatory again in certain social settings during late autumn/winter months.

Javid says we’re looking at 100,000 cases per day this summer. If you’re under the age of 40, it appears there’s a good chance you’ll be getting immunity from COVID itself rather than the vaccine.

And possibly long Covid symptoms which wouldn’t be great

I see we like Imperials modelling when it says things we agree with :p

😂That did make me smile to be fair. I’ve said before hospitalisations have been amended down once, possibly twice recently, which is good. I accept models are always based on imperfect data but ultimately saying they were wrong due to incorrect assumptions isn’t too bad is it ?!

I could also flip it the other way with everyone saying we should follow the scientific advice and when the government do, people still complain.

So much of this is calculated guesswork as there’s so many variables (not least guessing people’s behaviours !), hence the range of models

Im just playing.

I get the distinct impression we don’t really know, but weirdly have become a lot more relaxed since having my second dose.

Also have a horrible feeling that it’ll be vaccine hesitancy that’s the issue now and like fuck and I sitting around waiting for Darren and Karen to log off Facebook long enough to get a clue.

Funny, that!

Ultimately, I'm prepared to go with the Chief Medical Officer's view, as he knows more than I do, and has more access to information than I do. If he decides opening up now is the right thing to do then... it's the right thing to do. Time will tell if he's right or not.

I do find the mask fudging bonkers however, but I'll end up a stuck record if I don't shut up now, so I will :p Anyway, let's see what weak willed policy my workplace implements (and more to the point, Mrs Wisdom's!). Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised...

The public health messaging has been an absolute clusterfuck. But I’ve said before Johnson is a shit supply teacher who just wants to be liked so was never going to manage it.

Beginning to wonder if Javid has been appointed in an attempt to make Hancock seem competent. There was also this, "Health Secretary Sajid Javid says it will be up to shops and transport operators to have their own policy on masks.", who is he expecting to enforce that? If Tesco say masks only and people don't comply I highly doubt the police are going to assist.

I see delta is starting to spread in France now. France doesn't have the vaccine coverage that we do, (31.4% fully vax vs 50.4% here).

Yeah, it’s even worse in Portugal. Its a race between the variant and vaccine programmes around the world. The Delta variant was always going to become the most prominent strain (until the next more transmissible one !), red list or no red list for India

Don't know if I'm the first to mention this so apologies if this is old news

Our new variant... the 'Lamda' from Peru, aka C.37- this one is resistant to vaccines apparently

Death rate from this one twice as high as any other variant

Isn't that how it starts? Think back to last March. Nobody really sure, rumour & counter rumour, some people denying it, some people warning of the dangers, people appealing for calm as nothing is certain. Then...
There have been other ones they've investigated, and found have been OK (well... as OK as it gets!). Best to be aware, but let them do their studying. We can panic if the answer is bad!

The suspicious side of me wonders why we see comparatively little coverage of this variant domestically (I don't think anyway), whereas elsewhere its everywhere.

Perhaps not the type of thing certain people think should be discussed with the backdrop of restrictions being dropped?

In the same way as while the restrictions being dropped was being lauded/ slated, the right to peaceful protest was quietly being removed via the Policing Bill.

Think it was evading the already less effective Cinovac (the Chinese vaccine), no evidence that it can evade the Pfizer, Moderna or AZ ones afaia

It isn't a conspiracy anymore than variants popping up to give an excuse to lock us down is. It won't be the only variant along until this ends - hopefully the weak and pitiful one rocks up before the evil uber-killer one!

If we were suddenly confronted with the "Satan variant" directly imported from hell with a 90% death rate, there would still be people calling for an end to all restrictions.

I saw that Richard Ashcroft has now joined Ian Brown and Right Said Fred (!) in the denier camp

If there is a 90% death rate I don't think wearing a crumpled face mask in Tesco will save you

There would, and they'd be mental.

But the best way is to keep to the facts. So far, this Peru variant is a 'might' and a 'maybe'. Consistency says we have to trust our medical advisors as, well, they're the medical experts. It doesn't mean they'll automatically be right, but they've got a damned site better chance of being right than the rest of us!

The last thing we need is a mask war to be honest.

If people want to wear one then that is absolutely fine, equally if others don't then that is also fine.

Cannot see it playing out like that though.
