Don’t see the sense in Grealish tweeting that he wanted to take one. Southgate already took responsibility before. Pointless.

Because he was accused of not wanting to take one.

Saw this on Twitter, interesting and perhaps answers why Sterling didn’t take one and why Sancho did:

I honestly think anyone wanting Southgate gone is off their head. Remember going into the world cup in 2018? Our last showing at an international tournament was losing to iceland, the worst performance i've ever seen from and England team.

Southgate then got the job after big Sam embarrassed us, and expectations were zero. Southgate brought this new young team through and deserves credit for that, and we just went to the final of the Euros for the first time in our history.

People have short memories. Madness

I don’t want him gone, but how long are you allowed to live off past achievements and then fall short

I'm not sure you can attribute the players that become available through club football , as in breaking through acadamies into first team football..as a Southgate masterstroke .

He has more to choose from now compared to Hodgson for starters

The players available 5-10 years ago will offer up different results to the ones available over the last 3 years , same as with any team

Odd to compare 2016 to today

Many managers wouldn’t have risked players before they’d played a number of first team games or once they were a certain age. That’s why someone like Rooney was the exception not the rule.

It's because we're so used to winning major tournaments, a final appearance is a massive let-down.

I’d go with confidence every time.

Lineker v Cameroon is the best example I can offer- under that type of pressure, unless you have nerves of steel you should pick a spot and hit it hard. That way if the keeper guesses right it still goes in- like Kane’s last night. if you’re going to try and roll it in or place it with less power then you’re lessening your chances straight away as if the keeper does guess right he’s probably going to keep it out.

It is what it is- Saka looked terrified and should never, ever have been asked to take that last one for me. Rashford and Sancho should not have been thrown to the wolves either- but there you go.

Outside of the younger players , we don't have much choice as the period after the golden generation was shite and overlapped into this generation.

The only player not really being picked is dele alli

Lose lose. Even seen Pickford mentioned, widely reported to be a good finisher. If he takes the fifth pen and misses, people would be up in arms that a keeper was taking it.

I'm not sure why people find it so hard to admit that Southgate fucked up against the Croats in 2018 , fucked up against the Dutch in 2019 and fucked up again last night .

We've beaten one of the worst German side for many years, the only major nation we've beaten in the last 2 tournaments .

My god its frustrating

He's also playing players out of position now too ..like mount last night , just because he can track back well
And trippier 🤷‍♂️

Give him QATAR by all means , I highly doubt these major nations will be as poor next time , yea we've progressed but with the players coming through we always would have

He got us to the final of this tournament and the semi in the last.

Is success for you winning and that’s it? It’s so frustrating

Or…

Are our players just genuinely not good enough.

For me mentality was always the issue.

The only time I’ve watched England impose ourselves on a top nation at a major tournament knockout game was Germany in Euro ‘96. You could argue Germany at Italia ‘90 as well, we didn’t look overrawed that night. Every other time we’ve tended to look terrified.

We don't help ourselves though ,we started a European final with grealish ,sancho ,rashford and Bellingham on the bench to accommodate an out of position Mason mount and 2 holding midfielders.

Do you think mancini would have done the same with those players ?

Pete

We've played every game at home except Ukraine and played 1 top 10 nation all tournament (and lost)

He absolutely had to get to the final once the stars aligned and the run in looked straight forward

We did lose 3 games in the 2018 world cup and were beating Croatia at half time of a semi final. Again, we were winning 1 nil at half time but lost the game last night. In both tournaments the draw was really good to us, not to mention home advantage for most of the Euros. Defiantly two good opportunities for silverware. There does seem to be the same rhetoric at the end of a tournament about learning from the experience which will better prepare us for the next one. On one hand you have expectations before a tournament, but surly they must change as the draw shows your route. Based on the teams we've faced in the last 2 I don't think we've overachieved. I think a place in the final of the world cup was achievable and last night the game was there to win.

Well thankfully the middle east goes to early to mid 20s in November..but then we have to factor in that it's mid season too

Think Qatar can be in the 30s but there's going to be cooling systems in the stadiums.
The conditions are going to be a bit peculiar by the sound of it.
I think they'll be a non European winner.

Not sure that’s giving due credit to the Italian players and manager altering the way they were set up/playing to combat us though.

Its also true though. We were in control and we gave it up. Stay the way we were and we win, we could have been out of sight by half time.

You're all off your head. Got us to the semi finals of a world cup for the first time since when, and then got us to the final of a european championship for the first time ever. And all you lot can do is have a go at him for not winning. Utter madness.

Not at all.

He's the right man but he needs to learn the lessons he's being taught in a very harsh way.

We failed last night. That is a fact. All over them, a goal up, they were backing off, and we completely stopped playing. basically invited them to equalise, were unable to get any momentum back, then made some pretty baffling decisions on the penalties. And we had the better players, be under no illusions about that.

Just because we made some seriously bad calls last night does not mean people want him sacked- I don't anyway, But this is reality- face up to it or keep losing.

And this mentality of "ahh, we tried our hardest" while France & Italy walk away with the trophies- its smalltime.

Are we genuinely serious about being a serious football nation? It doesn't feel like it from all this outpouring of lovely platitudes. We are the Frank Bruno of international football- one world title win at home but failing every other time but loads of fans and "really brave".

Italy didn't care about platitudes or being nice, they cared about winning, its in their DNA, and thats the difference- they're winners and we're losers, and that will never change unless we learn these lessons we've been handed out three times now. We've got the talent, but can we learn? Thats the key. I think we can but its annoying to dress last night up as anything apart from a failure.

With the players we have and the games we had and where they were played that was a failure and there is no way of getting around it- Southgate will know that himself, you do know that, right?

The sun really didn't shine well on a small portion of England fans yesterday. The breaking into the stadium, the fighting, the littering, the racist tweets. We have some of the best fans in the world but arguably some of the worst too.
They’re not fans. They’re scum. Hopefully we won’t be seeing them anywhere near our games again after the proper good hiding they got from the fellas inside. I doubt they’ll care about England anyway until November next year.
