Waghorn and Györkeres look like an upgrade on last season, certainly what we had before Xmas.
Sheaf and Hamer will do well in the middle I think despite peoples (understandable) love affair with Kelly.
The back really worries me. We needed an upgrade at CB and GK last season to allow us to play a bit more open and a bit more attacking to utilise our forwards and midfield (particularly the wingbacks). I don’t think as it stands we’ve got it and we’ve lost Østigård.
It’s that important that I’d be very tempted to cash in on one of O’Hare and Hamer to fund it if we’re out of cash. A decent CM/AM is much easier to find in a Prem loan than a CB. And I think we need two minimum to get the back three up to scratch.
Our PPG without Kelly was below Wycombe’s so we definitely need a strong CM option there in his absence. I like Sheaf and Hamer individually but think they both need a good leader lining up next to them.
I’m liking our attacking options, the one area we’ve definitely improved on. Walker and Godden will get goals. Gyo look v good toward the end of the season and Waghorn adds experience and consistently scores 10 goals a season. All of them could realistically get 10 goals as consistent starters in a season.
It’s pretty clear we’re relying on loans to boost our defensive options, which is something we need to address next summer. We can’t afford to get it wrong with Maatsen (assuming it’s all but done) and this loanee CB we’re after.
As for Bright, a lot of people including myself have expressed my reservations at signing him. He’s a wild card who’ll either give us a bit of X-factor or bombed out the squad ASAP.
Robins has said this is ‘strangest transfer window I’ve known’ and I don’t think he will be the only manager to share that opinion.
The silver lining is that there are a good chunk of teams that are in a worse position than ourselves.
