Do we think Hyam could be the long term Fadz replacement in the middle? Then we’d just need a LWB 🤔

That was my thinking. Fadz can't go on forever and if we could get Rose and Hyam to play together it would help smooth that transition.

For me the big thing will be for at least one of them to become more of a leader - that's the thing we'd find hardest to replace in Fadz.

Not sure why you'd be happy to have someone who you think 'can't defend' and 'positional sense is awful' and that he's had 'some shockers in the limited games he's played'. The speed of U-Turn usually saved for CC84.
It's all relative. It was as a comparison of relative merits of both. Rate both highly.

My guess is that we'd have signed one of Souare or Cranie had Mason not got injured and completed his move.

The new contract for Mason was a baffling move wasn't it. Really strange.

Not really as in that short period he let the league alight and looked a real player. Then his form just fell off a cliff.
His form had fallen of the cliff by the time he was handed a contract if I'm not mistaken.

He signed a new deal in September 2019. Pretty sure he was very much on form then. Seem to remember it was around November time that he dropped out of the side.

He bombed him out the week after the contract was signed didn't he?

Don't think they said did they? Although given it was a hamstring surgery I'd expect he won't be back to full fitness until December at the earliest.

Just in time to be shipped out in the Jan window then. Shame, the lad gets no luck, if it has only been a few weeks he could’ve found himself as backup to Maatsen short term.

He was bombed out after the Rotherham and Tranmere defeats in October. He played a couple in November as I think McCallum was injured. It was very odd to be rated then relegated to second choice a month later and banished the following month

I think it was around a month between his new contract and the appalling Rotherham game which was the beginning of the end for him but he played fairly regularly up until November time.

Then he was bombed out.

He played 4 times after September and two of them I assume was down to injuries

Mason puzzled me last season was excellent up to the Watford leage cup-tie didn’t have a very good first half went off injured and was never the same again.

He suffered a torn hamstring against Watford I believe and then was out until mid-September but came straight back into the side after his recovery.

Most had him as their player of the season in that short spell up until the Rotherham game then the wheels just fell off.

It was two games of the wheels falling off - can't see how he was player of the season he'd played 5 games up to that point

Look back through the treads during the start of the 2019-20 season. Granted it was probably only 6-7 games at the very much but the majority were delighted he'd signed an extension.

Not really sure what point you're getting at.

My point is I do not see how someone can be given a new contract have two poor games - really it was Rotherham - and then be bombed out.

I suspect - I do not know - that the club decided McCallum could step up earlier than expected and that he was a saleable prospect and so quickly Mason became surplus to requirements

Pretty sure he was linked with celtic a while back? he would definitely cost a pretty penny but i think since we have a history with Zwolle we can get some wiggle room. Good shout.

They turned down £650k from Barnsley in the summer. Though he’s in his last year of his contract and has stated he wants to play in the Championship.

He wasn't in poor form at the time he was given a contract though which is my point. He was quite clearly in form up until then. Whether in hindsight it was premature to offer the contract after such few games is an entirely different arguement though.

But how he was bombed out was very strange. I don't think it helped that we switched formations.

It was originally much more about McCallum's progress than Mason not being good enough. Mason had started the season really well, and was probably our best player up to the Watford match when he got injured.

I remember I thought he was excellent in the first half of that match, then he went off injured at half time. McCallum came on, and actually looked even better. When Mason was fit he couldn't displace McCallum and only played a couple of matches by which time he was rusty. I am not convinced that he was bombed out because Robins didn't believe he was good enough. It was just McCallum was better.

In my view he could still potentially be a good Championship player, but that is unlikely to happen here.

McCallum was of course the better player but personally I think the reason why he was bombed out so suddenly was also driven by the formation change, which made McCallum the better option. I don't think it took Robins long to realise that as obviously McCallum was performing well in that role.

i watch eredivise sometimes as my countryman Jahanbakhsh played (now again plays there). from what i’ve seen he’s a very decent passer and ball distributer, mainly pushing up the field, good dribbler, not a bad defender by any means. looks like he averages a 7 match rating which is not bad at all.
So basically you’ve watched his highlights on youtube
