Was OK but not really about the Prem League, was just about Man Utd winning the league. Seems criticism isn't allowed, apparently everything about laughing the PL was an overwhelming success and went perfectly. Sadly they didn't seem to have time for anyone who might say anything negative.

Every chance of the Premier League becoming the super league that was proposed in the summer it is now almost, great comments by Simon Jordan a week or so ago on Talksport about how even this season the super league is taking shape with Man City, Man United & Chelsea raising the transfer fees and wages away from the rest of the division City & Chelsea don’t get much higher gates than a few clubs but pay £100 mill fees as if they are going out of fashion like confetti obviously Arab and Russian money in fairness to United they have 20000+ a match more but still pay millions more than what comes through the turnstiles.
And any club below them who have a superstar develop such as a Grealish or Harry Kane they buy them or try to and their clubs can’t stop it even if they are well up the table.

Watched 1st episode .. pretty good .

It did change football for the good at the time when you watch it .

Attendances were lowest since the 60s , known as a thugs sport because of the fans.. it was slowly dying

That isn't true though, attendances dropped in the early to mid 80s but had started to recover by the PL era.

That's the thing with the PL, it creates so many myths to justify itself. The sole purpose of it (and CCFC were very much part of it) was to protect wealth for a set of elite clubs. The consequences for the long term state of the game are disastrous.

Yeah, the reason *for* the formation of the Premier League was that attendances were starting to bounce, so it was an attempt to take advantage of that.

And yes, cut the trickle down that sustained our league system. Ironic really as the league depth we have is very much England's USP on a world stage, but we seem determined to put that at risk, when it's the very thing that made the game appealing.

I thought it was a pretty good watch whichever your view of the PL
Could have done without the ugly mug of that dog with fleas Vinnie Jones though

Italia 90 was actually the turning point for football in England, not the PL. Gazza's tears and England's relative success attracted many more women into actively going to games, while the male support base changed from a mostly working class base to a middle class one (particularly at the big clubs). As pointed out the PL was simply a vehicle to make money out of the upturn in interest, and that change in demographics.

Watched it, was OK. Bit fawning over the sky execs. Made me feel a bit ill when they went on about Americanisng football. That said It was nice seeing Cov 7th in the table after something like 21 games. Not much else Cov related tho. Forgot how United panic brought Dion Dublin because Shearer turned them down. Dion then did his knee a few games in which prompted them to go after Cantona. Proper sliding door moment that injury.

Last 20 mins was the Man U show. Found the stuff on Blackburn Rovers far more interesting....because it was.

I think we can all pick the bits that saved the sport but ruined the game (as we knew it) It's an age related thing though - Without coming across condescending, I doubt many 40 and under can honestly differentiate the last 29 years from what went before.

100%. It dawned on me as I watched the programme last night. I'd never previously given credence with the injury and then Eric's massive success being the catalyst that benefited us with DD.

apart from the Football league chap who thought it was all about 22 men playing a ball

i quite enjoyed the reminder and Cantona is entertaining - my manager is a sack of shit moment !

no room for any Cov stuff as we were and are a very unfashionable city - interesting to see us up there in 6 and 7th early doors

This is right to a point but the real change happened with Euro 96 it totally changed the type of person who went to watch football and stopped being a working class persons sport..

How many episodes are there? Next one, according to the listings, is about Cantona and his lunge into the crowd and the Blackburn / Man U title race that season.

Would love there to be an episode on the impact its had on the clubs left in the EFL and / or clubs like us that voted for the Prem and ended up out of it and in the shit. Be amazed if we get anything like that.

I think we were heavily in debt and Strachan and the management just wasted money on players that couldn’t keep us up - what these big teams don’t realise is that they need weaker teams to play and gain points - without half the premier league it wouldn’t stand up - like the Scottish pub league

There were some really good moments in the first episode.
Cantona's look to the camera as he heard Fergie speak about him in glowing terms was great.
As was the background to Cantona joining United and agreement on the price - again Martin Edwards knowing look to the camera as they replayed the press conference as he stated the incorrect price was good documentary making.
I hated that United team, still pretty much despise Ferguson and his bully boy tactics but characters like Cantona don't come around very often - I enjoyed it a lot.
I also had no idea that Dion's injury was the catalyst to Cantona joining United.

I'm sure the programme did not ask Brian Glanville for his opinions

I think that's a fair point in terms of balance - maybe in later episodes there will be a reflection on some of the negatives. But there have certainly been positives in terms of profile and the quality of players who now play at Prem level in this country.

There has been no positives - as glanville said at the time the rich wanted to make hay and the poor could just die. As he dubbed him Bert the inert just caved in along with wet fish Kelly.

At the FA meeting they caved in and allowed the premier league clubs into a conference room and make their own rules. It was a pathetic act of cowardice and is not now much different To the rugby premiership

The deed is done and the deed is gone but let’s not pretend it’s improved a thing

Man U vs Liverpool in 1991 and 2021 is and was a big game

Burnley vs Crystal Palace was and remains a dull unappealing cold bowl of soup

Fucking hell lads. The International break really brings out the cobwebs.

Bring on the 'Boro.

It’s referencing a current BBC programme and is a valid discussion
