Nice little write up from one of their fans at the game. Pretty fair and honest I would say

A VIEW FROM SOMEONE WHO WAS THERE: COVENTRY V CARDIFF
Post by Bakedalasker » Wed Sep 15, 2021 11:04 pm

Well talk about coming back down to earth with a bump. Everything about the Forest game had the opposite tonight. Our support was subdued and the performance on the pitch was worrying.

From the start it was clear who was going to play football on the ground and who was going to play it in the air. The team that played it on the ground got it off to perfection while the team trying to do it acrobatic style need to go back to the drawing board. Coventry, no prizes for guessing they play it on the ground, ripped us apart and deserved their lead. Besides stunning the Cardiff side it knocked the wind out of the Cardiff supporters.

We tried to reply with our aerial threat but it just was not there tonight. Be in a throw in or corner we just never troubled their keeper. In fact our targets were all on their knees trying to get to the ball. The quality of the deliveries was very poor. Adding to that take the battle in the midfield the home side were coming out 90% on top. The worrying part for me as we came up to half time was who did we have on the bench to change things?

It was no surprise that Colwill never returned for the 2nd half. He went from hero to zero. He joined Harris on zero as both were substituted by Collins and Bowen who then both returned zero. In fact Collins hits the negatives but a bit about that later. These 2 changes made no difference as the game went into the second half. Coventry just seemed more in control and it felt like it was only a question of tie before they got their second.

So as the game went on it was clear to me our only chance was if the home side made a mistake and we capitalised on it. Well the chance came as we went into the last quarter of the game. What look like a comfortable situation for the home side with their left full back in control of the ball by the touchline he then slipped allowing Ng to collect and send a pinpoint cross into the 6 yard area that look like it just needed a tap in. This happened at the far end from us supporters and the disbelief on everyone's faces when the header from Collins went over could be felt in our section. A massive cheers echoed around the stadium from the home support and you just knew that was our chance gone.

You could hear a pin drop in the away end and the only thing that woke us up out of our despondency was when the home fans starting singing at us "You're f%^&ing shit you're f%^&ing shit". We replied "We're f%^&ing shit, We're f$%^king shit". Yeah it was painful watching to the dire end.

Their sending off at the end was the only cheer you heard from us. Absolute a stupid tackle by their guy as the ball was in our half by the corner flag and he went in 2 footed from behind. It was right in front of us so watching him walk to the changing room was little consolation.

The final whistle blew and I had witnessed on of the quite performances by our fans for a long time. There was a lot of booing and thumps down as some of our players came over to us. They quickly realised that was not a good thing to do.

To be honest I'm expecting some poor performances as we go from this transition with the youngsters. This performance was too low for my liking and you could feel the worry as we left the stadium.

Blimey, I thought we go hard on our team. Didn't think they were that bad
It was the same with the Boro fans at the weekend. Most of our fans thought they looked reasonable. I don’t think these teams are performing that badly, I think they’re not coping with our intensity. We’re winning every lose and second ball and stopping teams from playing.

They went for the long throw route, but they lacked a long thrower! They were very loopy and easy for the CBs to read. Ironically, the first time they done away with that option we go & hit them on the counter.

They were rather quiet for the numbers they had.

The other point is that these teams are expecting to roll over Coventry given that we've been in the lower leagues for nearly a decade

They were an ok side but couldn’t cope with our speed on the break. Reality is it could and should have been a thumping. It was basically a 1-0 thrashing
Thats the only thing we are missing at the moment not putting games to bed. We need to find a way to score more than one goal as sooner or later we will be made to pay.
still think a fully fit Godden and Gyokeres are the answer but Im not complaining about Waghorne who seems to be getting better every game

I actually think he’s right. They had no idea other than boot it long or hope for a throw in somewhere near our area. Our defence were amazing.

Speed on break, forwards holding ball and releasing runners, intelligent movement and a defence that stood up to everything. The only thing missing is that final ball and clinical finishing but it will come. If we had that last night we would have been out of sight by ht. Cardiff were a little one dimensional but are not a bad side and will be in the mix come next April/May. They tried to play to their strengths but we out fought and out thought them. We will play worse and win by more than 1-0. Even so last night if they had taken their one golden chance they would have walked away with a draw.
Robins (and coaching team) deserves great credit in creating the belief in players and allowing/encouraging them to play that fast free flowing football. And how exciting is it to leave 2 and sometimes 3 players forward when defending corners.
Downside Dabo’s last minute rush of blood…what was he thinking…ball deep in their half and and no threat.

I think it’s because it’s Coventry. They are all expecting us to be a bottom 6 team

Yeah, I think that has a lot to do with it. All teams are the same. We used to be in L1 and L2 and were getting beaten. "A team like Coventry shouldn't be losing against <insert team name here>.

They're an established Champ team and they have expectation.

Playing like that the only thing they will be "in and around" in April/May will be Forest

As stated by other posters, it's the intensity of our play that is making it really challenging for some teams. Cardiff's "land of the giants" team leaves little to the imagination and I'm glad that we don't have to watch that each week.

I thought it was a really smart move by our coaching staff to have the advertising boards moved forwards, so it denies their players a run up for throw ins. I think we can expect an increased arial bombardment on the return fixture.

Need to to do the same re: advertising boards for the likes of Blues and Baggies (Roberts and Furlong), which I'm sure they will.

Can't really ask for more than that...getting rave reviews. Media havnt really picked up just how well we are playing and how good our brand of football is.

we had 4 breakaways from their long throw routine and if you noticed it was not used a lot in the 2nd half

We were very smart keeping players up when they did their long throws and corners. It stopped their centre backs getting as involved as they'd have liked to as they knew they had a long quick run back should we win possession.

I hope the wife of the bloke who wrote that has hidden everything sharp in the house. Reminds me of our days under Slade

They're in ninth position after 7 games and have just lost 1-0 away. Does feel a bit of an over reaction. Collins scores and they get a decent away point.

It's all absolutely true though and he is spot on with everything he says. Cardiff are an awful team aesthetically on last nights shwoing. Imagine watching that, knowing they have nothing in to change the way they play.

Three players left up on their corners was a masterstroke wasn’t it? Seemed to really nullify their aerial threat and allowed the three amigos (who looked like they’d been playing together for 10 years) to deal with the balls in.

Typical football fans really
What would our board have looked like if Collins' header had gone in and it finished 1 -1?
I think we all know...........

Still wouldve been pleased with the performance, but commenting on how we arn't clinical enough (which we've known since this time last year).

What I agree with most in there is that the writer mentions that they have nothing to be positive about in their defeats. Whereas we in contrast have genuine reasons to be positive. Good build up play, pleasing on the eye, tireless work rates. etc.
