and Birch fires straight back !!

..............................................

Birch has hit back at the club’s highest wage earner. And, while he did not comment on Ben Haim’s claim over his offer to waive £1.5m, he stressed the defender should not be entitled to special treatment when several other players have already left the club and turned their back on vast amounts of money.

Birch countered: ‘It’s disappointing that Tal Ben Haim has chosen to make a personal attack but perhaps understandable when you consider his advisors in this matter.

‘I realise too that he hasn’t been willing to negotiate a compromise on a number of occasions in the past – including when the club was last in administration.

‘I understand why nobody wants to lose money – whether they are players or the club’s other creditors. Tal Ben Haim is not alone here.’

The likes of Greg Halford, David Norris, Erik Huseklepp and Dave Kitson have sacrificed money owed to them by leaving Pompey in recent weeks. And Birch also pointed to the local businesses and non-football creditors who have effectively written off the debts to try to keep Pompey afloat.

He said: ‘Many of his (Ben Haim’s) former team-mates were in the same situation, yet made big sacrifices and showed the club is more important than any individual.

‘Many non-football creditors, some small local businesses, have also told me that they’d be willing to take a personal financial hit in order to keep the club going.

‘And then there’s the pain felt by the club’s employees who lost their jobs or took pay cuts earlier in the year.

‘If we all keep that in mind over the next couple of days then there is hope that the club may survive.’

Exactly mate. I'm actually with Tal on this one, let them take the further £300,000 hit if Tal's willing to take 1.5 mill. It's not like they are poor and desperatly need the cash, the amount they've bleed out of Portsmouth already should line their pockets for a while..

TV and money ruin everything. And TV is only so evil because it runs to satisfy the advertising industry-bringing me right back to money! This guy articulates that better, and more entertainingly, than I ever could http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDW_Hj2K0wo

I find it strange that Ben Haim is being put forward as the reason why Pompey may be liquidated whilst the people who actually made decisions and ran the club are well in the background.

The fact that he has offered to write off £1.5m shows he is willing to help, it isnt insignificant, but also shows just how ridiculous the contracts are/were that Pompey offered players ..... cant blame the players for accepting stupid money. Lets be honest the administrators are no less money minded.

I dont have much sympathy for any of the parties involved

50:50 at the moment but i would expect so. If there was no prospect then they would have already pulled the plug.

Personally i think with their financial track record they should have been out of business a long time ago..... in any other business they would have been. Have some sympathy for the fans if they were to lose their club but very little sympathy for any of the parties involved in creating this mess (players, managers, directors, owners, administrators, premier league, football league, fa etc)

Football needs a real wake up call ..... plenty of lip service to financial prudence very little evidence of action.... come 10th it may get that call..... but my guess is Pompey will scrape by

I know people will say if you are not interested then don't read it. I agree with that.

I am surprised Portsmouth evokes such interest on here. I don't think there is a thread on their fans site. Discussing our shocking finances ie not paying the rent.
Also is this not a thread for other football business.

Any thread discussing cov's finances gets shipped away to another forum.

Yet portsmouths sits here week in week out.

Sorry to be a miserable git. Just frustrates me probably because I hate Portsmouth.

I see it as a reminder of where we could have been if finances hadn't been brought under control at our club. Not as excessive as theirs, but a big unfundable debt is the same whatever the number becomes.

I think Dongo its because Pompeys history is so public - our owners have made a good job of muddying the waters enough so that even our own fans don't seem to realise the deep doo doo we are in let alone fans of other clubs. For too many of our fans the fact that we have signed a few journeymen on frees papers over the cracks and makes everything ok. The real test will come when the Escrow account is exhausted and needs topping up - will they simply shove some of the transfers money in there and allow it to run down again thereby buying some more time - I suspect so.

I can't work out how it is in any way acceptable to have a former owner be the person being lined up to take control again. Surely anyone who has had a hand in this mess shouldn't be let anywhere near the club?

The council are due to have a meeting on Thursday to decide if they're going to lend money to the club via the supporters trust. As a taxpayer in Portsmouth I'm far from happy about this, fair enough if the club was liquidated and they were helping the trust start a new team but the thought of taxpayers money being used to pay off old debts makes me angry, esp with the clubs record of repaying it's debts. This is their 3rd time in admin so who's to say it won't happen again and the taxpayers will lose out.

That's why I can still see them somehow weaseling their way out of it, building a good squad on more money than anyone in the division, and going up.

TREVOR BIRCH has confirmed that Tal Ben Haim has agreed to leave Pompey - a deal that takes the club another step closer towards securing its future.

The Israeli was locked in talks with advisers and representatives from Portpin into the early hours of this morning, after the pre-season friendly win at AFC Wimbledon, in a bid to strike a compromise deal on his outstanding contract that threatened to see Pompey liquidated.

But in a statement, club administrator Trevor Birch announced that the former Chelsea man had now accepted a pay-off and Birch also revealed that Liam Lawrence’s future could soon be finalised.

In a statement, Birch said: ‘I am pleased to announce that we have reached a compromise agreement with Tal Ben Haim, who will now leave the club.

‘We expect to make an announcement on Liam Lawrence’s future later today and, whilst the situation with Kanu has not yet been resolved, we are cautiously optimistic about our prospects.

‘The progress that we have made over the past 24 hours means that there is now a much better prospect of meeting the conditions of the CVA, completing the sale of the club and avoiding liquidation.’

Birch, who set the deadline for Friday for a deal to be agreed to seal Pompey’s future, appears to now be open to extending that deadline with some of the major obstacles cleared.

The quality of players they have on trial will certainly make them competitive,

Luke Moore
Izzal McLeod
Brian Howard

to name 3.

not sure they will be able to overcome the -10 to get authomatic promotion, especially as they will be finding their feet for the 1st few weeks, however they could certainly feature in the top 10 before you know it.

Well those 3 doubles the squad on their website which shows 3 full time players - they are going down.

Unbelievably the local council has agreed to loan the supporters trust nearly £1.5m of taxpayers money, not happy at all that my council tax is going to be covering their overspending.

They won't they are well up the creek.

Wouldn't be so sure, they have pretty much a full squad in training they just can't formalise the signings till the CVA goes through, for which the deadline was Friday.

Once that goes through expect to see a lot of signings very quickly and worrying they have players training with them who have chosen Pompey over other clubs as they have offered them more in wages!

Birch said

"I'd like to thank Liam for his support and all of the other players for putting the club's interests ahead of their own. They have all had to make very difficult decisions and been placed in an impossible position which wasn't of their making. "

er, you do it for free ?
