Ran the Peris Horseshoe fell race yesterday. Absolute beast of a race at 17.5 miles and 8000ft of climb/descent.

Came 12th in 4hrs46, which was 11mins slower than my best time, but given the conditions yesterday (zero visibility, chucking it down with rain, really slippery on the rocky terrain) it wasn't too bad.

Made a few minor route errors in the clouds which cost me the chance of a top ten finish. But really i'd left it all out there the week before at the English Champs, and yesterday being my 4th race in as many weeks, it was just a race too far, and was really hanging on from about 3hrs in.

Was also a very lonely race... due to the visibility i barely saw another runner in the final couple of hours of the race, and it does make you feel very isolated and is mentally tough to keep pushing hard.

Got 4 weeks now til the next race (a road half-marathon, but very hilly with over 2000ft of climb), so time to recover and get some solid training done.

Is anyone running Cov half this year? Ran 11 miles for my long run today, hoping to do the full distance for the next 3 weekends now before tapering down ahead of the day. Feels like forever since my 1st attempt in 2019 but im pretty confident ill be able to improve on my time from that day.

My wife’s doing it with her friend I did it a couple of years ago I struggled at the 8 mile mark for a couple of minutes but got through it

I broke my ankle , fibula and tore ligaments and had a skin graft On my left leg 2 years ago I still get swelling to my ankle so at the moment I’m not running as far as I used to but I’m thinking of doing the half next year

Bloody hell that's quite the injury list!
I struggled at 8 miles, its just as you exit those back lanes onto the Tamworth rd and i knew i was in massive trouble having gone too faat early on. Took every ounce of will i had to get to the finish from there so im hoping for a better run this time!

Being doing 8-10km 5 days a week for the last few weeks and already injured. Is it possible to get shin splints just above the inside ankle that is painful to even walk upon?

Yes it is possible. It may not be shin-splints though, better to get a proper opinion.

Have you gone from low mileage up to 40-50km/week very quickly? This is one of main causes of shin splints and impact injuries (that, and doing too much hard running off a low mileage)

Thanks for the reply.
I have ramped up very quickly, I hardly ran at all over the summer as it was too hot here. The main pain (sensitive to touch) is in the middle just above the ankle.

Just snuck a run in and about to work out before travelling down for the match so I can enjoy the inevitable heavy weekend guilt free. 3rd fastest 5k time of 21:48, was hoping to trouble my 2nd fastest time but only 10 seconds off so still happy.

Couple of my fastest km splits since I've been able to push again too, best today was 4:05/km (PB 3:51/km)

Did my first decent rep session after racing last weekend.

4 x 1 mile with 90secs rest, on the Penrith Parkrun course (flat, but was windy and rainy tonight).

6:10
6:05
6:05
6:00

I'd usually be looking to string a minimum of 5 together, and also a good 10 seconds faster, but given the conditions, solo session, and still not quite 100% recovered from last weekend, i was fairly satisfied and didn't want to push too much further.

Felt like I'd got back into the swing of things and some prick went through me at 5-a-side last night, got a 2nd ankle on top of my foot now hopefully won't stop me running for too long!

Went out running yesterday and ankle is fucked again, reckon it’s tendinitis - i’m sure someone on here had it before?

I had a achilles tendinitis about five years ago, brought on by llaying too much tennis and other exercise. I was hardly able to walk for a week and it took the best part of a year to get over it. I was hardly able to exercise beyond walking for that year. Was told it would be likely to recur but fortunately hasn't done so far. Not a lot that can be done for it beyond rest and anti inflammatory drugs.

Been told nothing other than walking for a month and to return then to have it looked at. The specialist looked at me like I was insane when I asked if that included training with a heavy bag.

Iced my foot for a couple of days, played again Wednesday and found it's only really kicking that causes pain but running was fine. Was desperate to get out the houses yesterday so did a 10k round the Mersey, managed my 2nd fastest time of 49:17

Not posted for a while as been pretty frustrated re running, as I had to pull out of the marathon a few days before.

Got a stupid injury on a training run and despite trying to recover and attempting a few practise runs, there was no way I could get through 26 miles.

The positive is that I have a deferred place for next year guaranteed.

So, my plan is to absolutely nail it. I’ve sort of drifted through two marathons without proper preparation or training. So now I’ve got a year I’m using it as a target to get as fit as I was a few years ago and aim for a 3:30 marathon.

On that note; other than running, any advice re other training to incorporate, for example strength and conditioning training etc?

Join a boxing gym, it’ll get you into shape in no time if you put the effort in.

I had achilles tendonitis when i was doing Muay Thai. Continued to train through it (so it must have been fairly mild), but couldn't run for a good while and had to cycle/cross-train.

Fixed it with a lot of stretching and visits to physio for ultrasound and massage. Hasn't re-occurred (and it's been a good 6 or 7 years since) but i'm very dilligent with stretching it now (prevention rather than reaction!)

Used the tram to get to 7-a-side last night then, on a high after what is essentially an hour long sprint session, thought it would be sensible to run the 7km home as a "warm down". Made it just under 6km before having to give up and struggling to walk the rest. Glad to have my fitness back but pushed it a bit far with that one

Went out this morning wanting a fairly hard run. Ended up doing 6km at 19:50/5km pace.

Not quite the distance (nor pace) that i was looking for. However i ran 13 miles yesterday, have trained twice a day all week except for friday, with a number of strength sessions in there too... so couldn't really expect much more.

It was also quite a grim morning.

69 miles for the week.

Only 4 weeks to the start of the excellent Birmingham League Cross Country season. I say this every year, but i can't encourage club members on here enough to get involved... the best level of competition you're likely to get in the country.

The first fixture is up at Crewe and i believe all divisions are racing together for the opener (then each division reverting the the usual format of separate venues for fixtures 2-4) .... so whether you're Godiva, Masseys, Northbrook, Sphinx, Nuneaton, Kenilworth, Leamington.... we'll all be on the same start line!

Did 9 miles (almost but not quite two laps) round Draycote Water this morning at 6:40/mile pace (20:50/5km pace)

Windy across the dams, and the uphill undulations really make it tough to maintain good pace and rhythm.

Currently on 76.5 miles for the week, but might finish the week off with a very steady 3 miles or so later.

Club night with Godiva last night. 5 x 1km with 90secs rest, round a road loop in the Warwick Uni campus.

3:34
3:30
3:23
3:21
3:24

Wasn't looking forward to it as not done any reps shorter than a mile for a good few weeks, as been trying to build strength for the upcoming cross-country season. But very pleasantly surprised by the times above.

Must pay tribute to my club-mate, as we were very evenly matched and flogged each other to death on the last couple, stride for stride all the way... couldn't have kept that pace up on my own.

8.5 miles for the session, on top of 6.5 in the morning, a very satisfactory 15 mile day.

Is anyone doing the Coventry Half Marathon this weekend?

I've been laid low with a cold and not ran since wednesday morning, but i might be out along the route somewhere on sunday if i can shift it....
