Dont call them Manure. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and presume you dont know the history of the word but trust me when I say its in poor taste.
So by that logic someone who has never been to an England game is not a real England fan? Ive been to a handful of England games, does that make me more of a fan than someone who hasnt? Genuine question..
Exactly and I wouldnt say that makes you any less of a fan. Its very easy for people to call themselves proper supporters when you live within 1 mile of the ground and are used to buying a ticket for 50p and half a bag of chips but its not quite so simple for everybody. I know people who are real fans of big clubs and have never been to a game and I wouldnt dare say they arent real supporters.

A fan and a supporter are different. A fan (definition - devoted admirer, enthusiast) would be what somebody would be classified as for watching England passionately from their sofa. A supporter (definition - to sustain, assist) is somebody who actively spends time and money to travel to watch and support their team from the stands.

I think it all depends on what teams you went to see when you were a kid.
I've supported Cov since i was about 10 (properly that is, for the first 10 years of my life i kinda followed them on the off) and i've gone to 6 games (Leicester & Man U away, Chelsea x2 (FACup) & Milwall Home). Yeh thats not a lot of games considering ive been a City supporting for nearly 19 years but i have followed them religiously on the radio or on the net when ive not been near a radio. I also try to catch any live televised games at a pub in town.
But someone i know who is a Man United fan. Now he's born in the Man City side of Manchester and everyone in his family is a City supporter apart from his Grandfather who is a united supporter. He said that the reason he supports Man U is because his Grandfather took him to several games when he was a kid and from then on he decided to be a united fan.
Also i know of several fans (some cov fans) who chose Cov purely because their father/uncle/grandfather took them to a few Cov games when they were children.
I'm moving to Wrexham next year to live with my Mrs but i plan on bringing my kids to cov for games as i'd like them to support Cov too. I don't think where you live matters as long as you do it the right way. Just supporting a team because they won the league X amount of times is shameful really...
So i don't think its fair to say a fan is purly a glory supporter until you know all the facts. Doesn't mean there aren't any glory supporters though...ive met loads of them and they all tick me off lol

I supported Coventry because they were my local Premier League team (I'm from Northamptonshire). I used to read about them in the Pink when I went stock car racing at Brandon Stadium every month with my late dad (who was a Spurs fan). Even though they seemed to lose every time I read the paper(!) I grew fond of them, and started remembering the players names (I was 8-9 at the time, must have been about 1990). It was annoying at school because everybody supported Man Utd, Liverpool or Arsenal back then, so if we lost to them I got heckled by everybody, whereas on the odd occasion that we turned them over any banter was countered by "Where are you in the league? How many leagues have you won?" etc etc
I live in Sheffield now and since we moved to the Ricoh I've been to about 20 home games in total (i.e. about 3 a year). It costs me £20 in petrol (return), £20+ to get in (admittedly this would be less if I got a season ticket), £5 to park a ten minute walk away and then I can't even get pissed. To be honest I can sit at home for free watching Sky Sports and I'll find out what's happening 30 seconds later than live at most. I can also drink on my own sofa, experience a similar atmosphere (pin-drop-esque), not get told to STFU by some 50 year old couple when I moan about a crap 10 metre pass, or get accosted by stewards. Call me an armchair supporter, but it's common sense overruling my heart/wallet. Last season I went to Bramall Lane, Sincil Bank and even Loughborough Dynamo's ground more times than the Ricoh. I love watching football at every level, but it just pains me to say that a day out at the Ricoh, for me, is one of the least enjoyable I've experienced.
Like many others here I live for the away days (I go to about half). Grounds that aren't 5 miles outside the city centre, where you can virtually touch the players, where the fans sing for 90 minutes whatever the score, and I can get drunk after a 4-0 defeat knowing that a train station is within reach and I haven't lined SISU's pockets. I personally can't wait to go to some of the new grounds this season.
Having said all of the above, the train station at the Ricoh will make me attend much more frequently when (if) it is complete...

People can use whatever terminology they like but the point remains the same. Is someone who doesnt go to England games not an England supporter? Are they less of a supporter than me? I would say no. There is more than one way to skin a cat, as they say.

Manure was/is a reference to Duncan Edwards being manure. It was a chant by the Baggies aimed at Man Utd fans to wind them up about Edwards and the other players that were killed in the Munich disaster.
It's not a play on Man U or Man Utd.

Ok thats explainable...
A - I come from a poor family and so there wasn't extra cash around for me to buy cov tickets + my parents didn't think it was a good use of resources im afraid.
B - After my father died (2002) I just didn't feel like going to games anymore...too painful...he loved Rugby and any sport i watched made me remember him so yeh...it hurt too much. I just didn't want to break down in the middle of a match if you understand what i mean.
C - I moved away to South West Wales 5 years ago while i was at university and hardly ever came home and most of my time & money went on drinking/smoking/food/studying/performing etc I did what any student would do, i enjoyed myself lol
D - As a Professional Actor, when im not between jobs and back in Coventry, im travelling all around the country performing at schools and other types of venues. A lot of the time im living out in the middle of no where without the ability to drive I can't just hop out to a game you see.
E - At the moment im on JSA, barely paying my bills and surving on very little food. So yeh, another reason why i can't make games.

And please, no childish comments like "I'm in the same situation but i still go"...great, im glad you find the money to go to games while managing to survive and i really envy you for it but to put it simply, paying my bills and having enough food to survive are of a higher importance right now.
But in the end you and I aren't the same person, we have different sets of circumstances no matter how similar they may seem at face value. So just because ive only gone to 6 games, doesn't make me any less of a Coventry City Supporter than someone who goes to 40 a season.
Each of us follows our chosen football team in our own way and based on the limitations of our situations and no one has the right to critercise that person simply because they do not fit the mould that that person believes everyone should fit. When i have the money to go to a game, ill go. I'm hoping to go to one very soon as it has been too long.

I don't agree with you one bit here.
I 'support' my team where ever i am! Don't have to be at a match to support them.
I could be on the beach or at work but ill still be on my phone checking to see how the games progressing.
If you relegate everyone who doesn't come to the games to 'fans' then you should take everyone who lives in a different country, everyone who can't afford to come to the games, everyone who has a serious disability that does not allow them to go to matchs and put them all into that little catagory of yours.
Your saying because you go to matches and they don't your better than them, even though you don't know them and have no idea about their personal circumstances.
You know mine because i've just posted it up as an example of the things that can get in the way of being able to attend matches.
Some Cov fans could have Cancer for God's sake and you'd think the demote their support of our football club just to puff up your own sense of self worth even though the illness could kill them...
I think you need to consider the whole situation, bones and all before you make statements like that....

You can call them supporters or fans....whichever floats your boat and makes you feel good about yourself but in the end what matters is that we all follow Coventry City and we all want to see them do well this season!

Really? yeah I've been looking for someone to travel with. well my old man is a city fan but I dont think he has the funds this season. Went to see lynn a few seasons back for a few games when JJ was playing. What games you got your eye on?

I am not saying one is better than the other or that supporters care more than fans about their team but read the definitions, they mean different things.
I would guarantee that my knowledge of the club is greater than 90% of season ticket holders, i even embarrass myself sometimes with the useless info i have in my head about appearances, goals scored, attendances etc. I own every shirt since 1983 and am a good chunk of the way through collecting every programme from that year as well. I am a saddo.
However i am significantly less of a supporter than a st holder these days due to my personal circumstances. I am more of a fan. Thats my point.

If you have never been to a game before you are a fan and not a supporter. Of you get to as many games as you can you are a supporter and not a fan. This to me does not mean most games.
I can't make as many games as I would like. I live 4 1/2 hours from Cov and also work shifts which includes weekends. My first game this season will be Yeovil. I am off work after the shift I am doing tonight for nearly 3 weeks, but will not be on the mainland. It is going to take me about 7 hours to get there. I might only be able to get another couple of games in during the next couple of months, but will then have 3 weeks of being able to go.
I used to be an England supporter. I used to go to England games. I am now an England fan. Prefer to waste my money watching Cov. Each game costs me about £250 and I have a big family to support

I now live in NZ but was a season ticket holder for many yrs...Even moved house when we moved to the Ricoh to be within walking distance..Still listen to the phone in after the games...as most games are played in the middle of the night here so get up early Sunday morn to listen....PUSB...Sky Blue Army....:claping hands:
Its very easy to look at distorted facts like that but bare in mind that Manchester United have something like 600million fans worldwide so the percentage will always be low. Perhaps the most telling poll was the one that showed 55% of football fans in Manchester support United compared to 15% who support City. With so many fans it would be impossible for them all to live in Manchester, there just isnt room.
Of course I read your post. Lets look at a hypothetical situation. Man A spends £400 on a season ticket, goes to every game, buys a beer and a pie and has a replica shirt, spending around £600 per year on Coventry. Man B doesnt go to any games, for whatever reason, but through shirts and other merchandise he spends £700 per season on Cov. Is the man that supports the club by giving them money (as stated in someone elses earlier definition) not a supporter just because he doesnt go to games? Or is there a chance that things arent quite so black and white?
