Finished 3-1. Not a great performance from our lads vs a very young Crewe side really. Had a lot of the ball but were pretty wasteful.

Do you have a teamsheet? I guess the Crewe side was unusually young/weak given they're playing in the EFL Trophy tonight?
All the Twitter/Facebook lot will be demanding Tavares be ahead of Walker on the basis of scoring a goal against kids even though I guarantee 95% of them have never even seen him play.

Don’t have a team sheet but I was talking to the Dad of one of the Crewe players and he said the average age of the team was about 17 and that all their older players were with the first team for the Papa John’s.Good to hear from someone who was there.

Tavares looked nowhere near ready for the first team to me. Probably should have had a hat-trick, but hit a few right at the keeper. Jones was our most involved player, but felt he was trying to hard to make things happen. Impressed with Ngamdu and Howley most of all.

Yeah, I'm exactly of same opinion with Tavares, he definitely has something but still miles off first team level. Would hope for a L2/NL loan in January & see how he gets on.
Most fans don't really understand the drop off to U23s, particularly with the squad changes etc. This was a lot of fringe Championship first teamers vs the teenagers of a club bottom of League One.
I like Ngandu but difficult to see his progression tbh. Howley is very exciting though.
Yeah but apparently he can run really fast?

Think Ngandu is in need of a loan to League Two. I remember talk of Exeter being in for him in the summer which would have been a good move. He’s only 20 still so he’s got time.
He didn’t get much of a chance to show that off today tbf as Crewe were playing very deep.

Why?
- With 7 subs, I think two Centre Forwards is a good option. We typically go with this before Waghorn injury
- Having a young-pro experiencing match day with the first team can only be a good thing. Training/warming up with better players
- More likely to be ready should we suddenly need him. Another suspension/injury and we are down to bare bones up front
- He's the star performer in the U23s right now. Scored 13 in 9 or 10?
- He's hardly 16 or 17. At an age where he could in theory be ready. Similar age to when Wilson was thrust in (not saying he will be as good as him at all before you jump on that).
- Why not? I don't see it causing a major issue.....

Let's not try and create an fan divide over Tavares. No need.
Some fans have read about how a young kid is doing really well in the U23s and have suggested a chance on the bench with the first team. Like we saw with McSheffrey and Wilson. That's what we want to see isn't it? We want the young lads to progress and push as far as they can. He's doing all he can. There is absolutely nothing wrong with people asking the question. No-one is demanding him in the XI.
Ultimately it's down to Robins. He'll make the call. But don't start taking the piss out of people for wanting to see the young lad progress.

Don't think it's anyone taking the piss, more those that have actually seen him play trying to temper the expectations of those that just see he's scoring loads of goals in frankly uncompetitive games & then demand he's thrown in. Particularly when they use it as a stick to beat existing, established first team players with.
The club have a development plan for him & throwing him in before he's ready could actually do more damage if he then struggles. We all want him to do well but progression of young players is not linear.

I agree with all that. But I can see this developing into another unnessecary manufactured divide. Another Cult shall we say.
Personally I don't think there are many players that are first team ready before they are given minutes in the first team. Getting in around the senior match day squad is all part of the development. The U23s doesn't compare to Championship football obviously but at the same time not everyone is knocking in goals for fun in the U23s. Progression in practice, albeit on the bench also inspires not only the player himself but all U23s.

Now we are an established championship team it’s going to be hard for anybody to break in from the u23s.
Really excited to see Eccles back and hopefully pushing for a first team place. He certainly looked more than capable last season

When I've seen Tavares he plays on the shoulder of the last defender and tries to use his pace to get in behind
It will be harder to do that in the Championship
Maybe he'll go out on loan

But I think that late in games where we're winning and the opposition are pushing to score that could be useful. He either gets covered by a player and can get in a foot race with them if we clear it into space upfield or they have to keep an eye on him and it reduces pressure on us.
It’s whether he has the football intelligence to stay onside, that could be an issue and then also the intelligence to make the right decision when on the ball. They’re just two factors the first team management will be considering. As others have stated he could do with a loan back to league two to play more first team games
