I was thinking more of compulsory voting per se. As in general elections. As I said previously, I'm a fan of it.

P.S.

Don't bother rising to @Grendel and his bollocks.

I'm only interested in informed opinions.

(watch @Grendel bite)

In general elections I'm unsure. G's been OK tonight though I disagree strongly with his wage rise arguments

That laffer curve bollocks has long being discredited, and given who some its main cheerleaders have been, no wonder

Shall we increase taxes then perhaps? I’m sure only applies to certain sectors of society

Why on earth would you enforce votes - it’s the stuff of North Korea and Putin led Russia

It does of course depend which taxes and by how much. The Conservatives and to a much greater extent their Republican counterparts have tended to raise taxes on lower earners and offer giveaways to higher ones and big business. The US in particular has seen an obscene transfer of wealth in that direction

It's a bit like vaccinations to me.

Everybody should vote/get vaxxed, it's for the greater good.

I admit, that's a bit of a stretch ideologically, but that's what I believe.

If you want the benefits of society, then you fucking vote for or against the incumbent party. Doesn't matter which way, but you fucking vote.
That's the social contract.

I always took abiding by the laws of the country as the social contract. On voting which isn't really related to the thread, I don't think it should be compulsory but that politicians need to engage a lot more with the 30-35% of the electorate that doesn't turn up even in a GE

...and Australia

Yes I know but you have to have the ability to spoil the ballot and frankly Australia isn’t a great example of democracy - people can’t be dragged to a ballot box - I’ve hardly ever voted in most local elections and if I had to I’d vote for Tarquin Biscuit Barrell

I love it when a thread goes west.

Ironically Russia doesn't have compulsory voting. The fine in Australia for not doing it is pretty nominal anyway

Its an argument used as an assumption is most would vote left. I doubt it and anyway you have to be allowed to spoil your paper. Never happening and pointless anyway

They did that in 2016-19 and it was battle of the mentals. There’s no evidence non voters are a special breed, leave ‘em to it if they can’t be arsed.

So, fuck the disenfranchised. Is that what you're saying?

Not saying force them to participate just think it's generally a shame that turn out has decreased over time. In the US it's sunk to below 60% even for the presidency.

I would like people to be automatically registered when they turn 18 at least, it should be made as easy as possible to take part.

No. I’m saying most the disenfranchised vote the same way as the enfranchised and many that don’t vote because they’re not represented have fringe views that you shouldn’t pander to.

Electoral politics should be about compromise because the winner rules us all.

If you don't vote you are a c**t.

There, I said it.

True fact that.

Conservatives still odds on to form the next government. Despite how horrific you all think they are, still no credible alternative. Just thought I'd leave you all with that cheerful thought 😀

Is Starmer a worse bet than Johnson in your view?

No, as in who do you think would do a better job?
I have no idea tbh. This far into his opposition I still don't know what Starmer stands for. I wasn't a fan of Corbyn and disagreed with him on almost everything, but at least you knew where he was and he had principles.

In fact I think his entire opposition is based on 'yeah but Boris'

I saw the thread title and just assumed that it was a dyslexic person trying to spell Ben Stokes.
