At least they might drop Buttler now after his latest showing

There isn’t a system though is there, the Test side is clearly an afterthought and going all in on the short format didn’t even get us to a final spot. If we’re not going to take Tests seriously then stop competing and let a new nation have a go.

If we are, then let’s commit equally to developing excellence in both formats and giving some help to the County Championship.

The system is there and is still used but players are putting more emphasis on short formats of the game due to the money involved and it affects the way they play the longer form.
We are very underprepared for the series which has made us look worse than we are.Im more surprised by our lack of bowling penetration than the lack of batting (which i had expected tbh).

Well that hasn’t been helped by the sheer number of dropped catches.

This is the problem:
the batting averages of this England team

Rory Burns - 31.36

Haseeb Hameed - 34.25

Dawid Malan - 29.61

Joe Root - 50.09

Ben Stokes - 36.61

Ollie Pope - 31.37

Jos Buttler - 33.27

Chris Woakes - 27.42

Ollie Robinson -10.55

Stuart Broad - 18.51

James Anderson - 9.32

Woeful that, Buttler is not even the 3rd best keeper in Australia. Foakes, Bairstow and Bracey all better

he’s in the team becuase he allegedly can counter attack and take it to the opposition. He’s done it twice in 50 odd test. He’s done nothing to justify selection. For all the runs he gets they might aswell play Foakes who’s by far the best keeper in the country

I really like Buttler and thought he’d finally got to grips with test cricket over the past year or so but he’s not looking good...the drops were poor (albeit one very good catch) and I’m wondering if his minds on the job as he’s had a kid recently and was one of the players they thought might not tour

Burns, Buttler and Pope are all playing for their places. Team selections poor (no spinner this test and four similar seamers ?!!), dropped 40% of our catches, looked undercooked due to crazy limited overs schedule/limited warm ups. All in all bit of a shambles so far. Let’s hope it improves !

Strategic. Quick turnaround in tests. Make us spend another day in the field tomorrow, put us in tomorrow evening then bowl us out in 2 sessions on day 5

Or bowl and get England out lunch tomorrow and have a extra time off I always think an innings win looks better.

The only one I’d make a case for is Pope, has something about him and he’s only 23 - averages 50 in first class cricket - worth persevering with.

Burns doesn’t have the mentality for ashes cricket - got upset when that woman cricketer made a joke, and shied away from opening after his first baller. Hameed has faced the first ball last two innings

silverwood has a lot to answer for - both teams have regressed under his leadership. England also have too much reliance on stats and numbers

Silverwood should never have got the job and they need to move away from him quickly.

An extra day in the field puts more overs into The bowlers legs. Also demoralises the opposition. Basically a slow tortuous death. Why put England out of their misery when they can make it worse.

let’s face it Australia have spent about 4 sessions in the field over 2 tests.

an innings win only looks better for the fans

Should have been Gary Kirsten but the rumour is he didn’t turn up with a presentation, Silverwoods was spot on though.

Kirsten literally only has to say “I’ve won a World Cup and took 2 teams to world no1 - when do I start”

Getting England bowlers tired won’t matter the whole team are shot, Australia can clear most of the top order with minimum effort. They can even make this Harris look average. England are just not doing the simple things well the catching is shocking and they are bowling far to many no balls.

18 no balls ( two of them would have been wickets) to Australia's one, they said on BT. That's shocking.

Yeah, I’m not talking for good, especially for Pope. However he’s almost the most disappointing as by all accounts he’s a quality player at county level that everyone raves about but something not right at the moment. Flatters for device but plenty of time for him.Hoping he’s not another Hick !

Agree with comments about silverwood. Questionable selections and tactics. Plus the no balls mentioned above, plus the 40% dropped catches when Australia had their first drop in 24 I think earlier ! We look well undercooked and selections etc have just compounded the situation.

I don’t understand how international cricketers can be no balling at that kind of rate. Just beggars belief

I do get your point about Pope. I’ve been frustrated with him. Everything about his technique says he should be good… but it’s not happening.

Says a lot. If Root/Malan don’t get going we’re fucked, if they do we’re still fucked but slightly less

That was a shocking decision from Tucker against Burns it was nowhere near the bat a true homer umpire.

Starc ran straight down the pitch earlier as well nothing done.

England are getting beat easily but people like Tucker make sure it’s a lot easier for them.

Only seen three balls from Lyon and it was nice of England to help the Aussies by leaving the spinner out.

Agreed. Silverwood and Root just don’t trust our spinners 🤷‍♂️. This pitch would’ve maybe helped Leach or Bess restore some of their confidence at this level. Shame rashid isnt fit enough to play test cricket.

They need to work with Bess or find another spinner and stick with them. I don’t think Leach will ever bowl a team out and this lot more than have his measure.

That's a real loss. Combination of humour but a real understanding of the game from both a playing and coaching perspective.
