Ostigard returns to Brighton (1 Viewer)

Definitely worth a 250k bid as he's out of contract in the summer. Speculate to accumulate. Would be worth 10 times that with a 3 or 4 year contract the day he signs.
We’re not going to spend 250K when we could agree terms this month and then sign him on a free in the summer.
Not sure he’d automatically be worth 2.5m either.

A) Can’t agree terms on domestic free transfers until the final month of their contract, unless given permission by the club.
B) No doubt he’ll be offered a new deal at Brighton and that would mean compensation would apply.

The Brighton fans I know have doubts they’re going to offer him a new deal.

I like Ostigard but I believe there will be better available come summer we are okay with the four CBs we have until then.

Let's face it he is nowhere near being a Premier League player at the moment. He would really have to build on his game to get to that level. Would be reasonable for us in the Championship though.

Absolutely would take Osti back, surprised it even needs to be discussed.

He seems to get stroppy when not picked - he was playing regularly then relegated to train with the U23 squad - I doubt we will take him back

Oh quite. But they can offer him a deal on the same wage as he is now, almost knowing he will reject it because he wants first team football, and then still qualify for compensation. Would be madness not to make that offer on their part.

I would love to see him back. Like Gyko, he excelled after an extended run in the team, something he hasn't had at Stoke for whatever reason.

But....

How much of the Stoke move was down to the Brighton management ? The decision may have been out of Osti's hands. If he chose to move there, does that mean he felt he'd achieved what he needed with us and wanted another challenge. Coming back won't change that from the players perspective.

My bigger concern is if he came back, would that would push Hyam out or over to left CB where he struggled at times last season? We've got a reasonable balance at the back. Osti may shift that balance out of whack a bit too far.
No rose and JCS are the LCBs
Hyam and Osti would be the RCBs
McFadz would be the CB

For people saying we dont need a CB, we play a three at the back formation, besides JCS,Hyam, Rose and McFadz who else do we have that Robins sees as first team ability, when one of them is injured or suspended there is no depth and what happens when 2 of them are unavailable for a match, I say sign him up as he would fill the depth, then if we can look for a LWB and/or a CM

You misread my post. If Osti came back, Hyam would likely move across to LCB as he's another Robins favourite at the expense of JCS and Rose. I hope I'm wrong but stranger things have happened at the Sky Blues.

Im sure Robins wouldnt be that sentimental even with his golden boy, surely Hyam would get dropped as Rose ans JCS are clearly better at LCB

I have said before I liked Ostigard for me he is a down the middle centre-half but is he better than McFadz possibly our player of the season so far by the sound of it he wouldn’t be happy to be a reserve and although now in his mid thirties can we drop McFadz at the moment as for back up to our 4 CBS what is in our U/23 squad 8 points clear at the top of their league are they not good enough for our bench & we have just signed Abel Alabi at 18 when will he be good enough for our bench, there’s Drysdale too. I’ve only seen the U/23s once but those of you who see them more often what are our reserve CBS like ?

Drysdale is not there yet, possible needs a league 1 loan, Pask the obvious (Robins looking for a permanent move for him), Alabi just signed for 23s and needs to work on his positioning, George Burroughs I would say is the closest needs a loan to League 1. There is a big step up from u23s football to Championship football

We’re one injury away from having no cover at CB. Just emphasising more how the squad needs help and if we don’t get it we’ll be on for last season’s points tally or thereabouts

I was saying on Twitter that the wage bill is the real issue. We seemingly don’t have the budget for a squad of championship quality players. We’re 8/9 players short from a full squad (2 permanent players in every position, I’d argue we’d need: GK, CB, LCB x 2, LWB x 2, CM x 2, AM) and that’s about what we’ve got in deadwood (Wilson, Pask, Kelly, Allen, Shipley, Jobello, Hilßber, Dacosta) but of those only Hilßner and Dacosta were signed in this division.

Boddy said before wage demands are roughly quadruple L1 which would imply we’d need to shop four players out to get one in. Leaving the budget about 6 players short. About £3m give it take.

£10 a ticket, 23 home games means an increase of 13,000 required to be self sustaining with that squad. Which is more than our capacity. Something has to give.

There is a bigger step from U/18s/U/23s to the Premiership but Arsenal have been transformed since Arteta had the confidence to put youngsters in. Was discussing this recently with someone who while not criticising Robins generally mentioned he doesn’t give his young guns a chance and looking at it he doesn’t, he did with McCallum who proved a success but I can’t think of anyone else.

Tom Bayliss
Jordan Shipley
Josh Eccles

All made first teams debuts after being in the academy from a young age. That is without mentioning those like Thompson, Drysdale, Wakefield etc. who came in later and were given a chance. Also ignoring Willis, Burge etc. who are youth players that he kept in after already having broken through.

Glad to see your resolution isn't to make any decent points.

We got about a third of that from the combination of higher crowds and £500k from TV games. Succeed in binning off all those players named and that’s probably another £1-1.5m. Even if we made an extra £3 million though you know where it’s going and that’s not back into the team.

That’s the real problem we have here in my view

I think the finances for last season will show a grim picture. We also bow have the football league loan to lay down as well as interest rate accumulation.

Fisher was not joking when he said this set up doesn’t work in the championship

It is ironically I think the higher risk strategy

Don't think Allen wants binning just signed new contract and should be a regular imo

Thats because Arsenal has one of the best academies in the world and to be fair a couple of them were on the fringes of the first team anyway, where as ours at the moment there is no one that can dislodge anyone in our first team as we were playing so well, and currently going through a blip. Tavares, Rus, Eccles and Burroughs (Jack) are probably the next to make the step up but not this season, Eccles probably could but not with Sheaf, Kelly and Hamer playing well

I don't think Kelly is playing well at all.

sheaf or Kelly we play with to many holding midfielder we are to cautious

Kelly’s only in cos Hamer is out. I’d agree I’d have him ahead of Kelly when that’s the case. But you’re saying he should be starting so drop Hamer?

I think his decent performances are too rare and his anonymous performances too common personally. I’d rather have a more commanding CM in. Which aside from Hamer is something the squad lacks IMO.

Osti would have been first choice RCB for us at the start of the season, as he was the previous season. Now not so sure. Both Hyam and Rose look better than last year and their overall distribution has improved even taking into account our recent blip. JCS looked good (Luton apart) before his injury. That said, Osti has that will to win that you can't train into some players. Osti in nowhere near Prem level but there seems to be a good deal of potential for him to improve. Missed sitters last year from set pieces, but I think his directional heading from set plays will improve over time. I would definately welcome him back but I feel cost may prove a step to far for our fragile finances.
