How can so many fans not know the basic premise of it? Fair enough the interfering, the second phase etc it's complicated.

To be honest, i've been playing and watching football my entire life and i am no longer sure i know the offside rule - the way it is officiated these days, anyhow!!

It's always been the same basic rule of having to be 2 players between you and the goal though.

Yeah all the interfering nonsense is confusing but that's the whole basis of it.

Most fans have been brought up playing and/or watching football where flagging somebody offside was a spontaneous decision made by somebody using the naked eye only.
In that circumstance you could see the decision easily going either way and on the basis of the general "benefit of the doubt" to an attacker Kane would likely be judged onside.

No it's people thinking he was onside because of Rugider being by the 6 yard box rather than the one he was more in line with.

WTF is the keeper doing? Said it before but the maths just doesn't stack up for making decisions this tight using VAR. Once you factor in the frame rate and speed the ball & players are moving at there's a significant margin of error. Needs something similar to umpires call in cricket.

That was my point, people saying why did they need VAR as it's obvious as Rudiger was there. ha

Would still expect a lino to spot that in terms of the line with the other player as it's a decent margin.

You can only be offside with a part of the body that you can legally score with (cant be offside with your hand)
Can an opponents hand play you onside?

To be fair, they hadn’t really moved. I called offside immediately.

I have also had a discussion with someone who thought he was played onside by Rudiger. Didn’t realise that it was 2 defensive players to be onside.

I believe so, I swear they draw the lines from the furthest back part of the defender's body? Not 100% sure though.

I did think it was a goal when I first saw it, but then of course on the replay I could see there was only the one defender, Rudiger, in front of Kane. I didn't spot that live at the time.

Unbelievable that so many seemingly don't know the the rules. As someone said on Twitter, that rule has been in place for over 100 years.
