If it’s a young player with a viable path to the first team in the future, if you can match them with a team who will commit to playing them every week and/or in a system comparable to the parent club’s, then it’s worthwhile. Tom Bilson is the one who springs to mind. But the vast majority of our loans are just farming people out to manage the squad numbers and prune the wage bill.
Its not all about developing them for our first team, but about developing players in general so that they may be able to make a living out of football if they arent good enough for us, whether that be in a lower league or non league.

Strange considering he was playing pretty regularly for Ross County, where 2 of our other 23’s are, when we signed him. 2 years with us and he’s not ready anymore?

Yeah it's a bit weird, would think he would at least be decent for a League 2 loan.

He only started 17 SPL games in fairness, all of which were as a LB rather than a LWB.

I've seen him play a few times in the U23s & he's definitely not ready yet.
He is clearly still getting to grips with a wing-back role & doesn't look entirely comfortable with it, particularly going forward imo.
That's not been helped that he's been asked to play as a LB again & even a LCB on occasion to cover for absences in the squad.

He's still 19 & lots of development potential there. I can understand the logic of keeping him here, learning a system & style rather than loaning him out.

Interested to hear what @SBchimp & other regulars at the U23s think?

They may throw him into a one month national league loan after January has ended towards the end of the season. He's got plenty of time yet.

Why a loan ? There’s enough U/23 games, loan him out and who knows how many games he gets picked for. We can monitor him here play him regular in various positions as we have done. Still only 19 but I’d see the next 12 months as crucial.

We are a victim of our own success. Many of the (development) players signed over the past few years were brought in when we were Div 1 or 2 and were almost ready for those leagues. Now we are a top 10 Championship team so those same players are now expected to raise their games. No one to blame.

I like him, plays with passion and desire. If he has the ability to get up and down as a wing back would be the biggest question. As long as we keep playing this formation and at this level he’s going to find in incredibly hard to break through. He could play lower down the leagues as an out and out LB right now for sure. Maybe L1 but I think L2 to get a decent run of games.

Agreed totally.

So the question would be, is it more important to test him in first team, competitive games at a lower level as a LB or keep him here & try to get him up to speed with our system & the wing-back role?

In my opinion, if he has any chance of making it here, it should be the latter or can we find a lower league team who plays a similar style & could guarantee him games at LWB?

I hope Reid and G Burroughs will be battling it out come summer for the back up LWB spot. Both will of had similar amount of games in Scotland at first team level. It will be good competition and hopefully they both improve enough to give MR a headache and at least save him money in that position. Good to hear Reid is with the 1st team he is heading in the right direction...

The thing is about buying players to develop them, you don't actually know how they will turn out. Because there are so many factors involved.

We have an academy to run and it has its own budget.

Fans are too first team focused. Players often develop and move on without making the first team. Some move to other clubs and some from other clubs come here.
That is how football works.
