And even if you were, the cause of the Chernobyl disaster wasn't something inherently wrong with nuclear, it was a number of avoidable factors. Quite a few old the Soviet era reactors are still going today.

I do agree that we should scrap VAT and the green levy on fuel bills to balance it out as much as possible but in the end this will be a reality for many other aspects of our lives. I think I read some countries in Europe - Denmark being the worst - have had even higher increases - we have not invested sufficiently in nuclear power to mitigate the need for gas fired electricity

So we just go from one crisis to another. Tackle the energy crisis by adding to the climate crisis. So characteristic of this Government. No foresight.

Disagree here. The chances of disaster with modern reactors is low. And yeah it’s kicking the can with the waste problem, but the only way out of this is to kick the can really.

Of course the chances are low, but it's a cumulative probability. It only has to happen once an a large area is fucked for generations. And you know full well what we're like with upkeep costs on infrastructure in this country. Fuck that, let's give a massive wedge to the shareholders instead. The when it becomes a massive problem we'll just let it be nationalised and let the public purse pay for it.

Fact is the money we've spunked on nuclear and keeping gas/coal going over the years would have been sufficient to have had a viable renewable energy network in place by now. So we wouldn't be talking about needing to scrap green levies, or wholesale gas prices, or being bent over by the oil cartels and having to ignore all sorts of human rights abuses because it'd all be irrelevant and we'd have a much healthier environment to live in to boot. Those that are complaining about how the green levy is making energy unaffordable are making it that way because they refuse to give up antiquated energy sources out of financial self-interest.

The last serious nuclear disaster was Fukushima 11 years ago, you can go and visit it now. And we aren’t likely to be hit number an earthquake or a tsunami any time soon. This is all hangover from a generation ago when plants weren’t as safe.

What we should’ve done is go harder on nuclear instead of transitioning to gas.

I'd love you to be right but I can't see it. It'll damage them a bit but they'll be quick to push the "new leader, new Tories" mantra and sadly far too many people will fall for it.

Even if people are suffering with energy bills, food bills, mortgage increases there will still be this weird over-riding belief that the Tories are more economically competent.

Agreed shmmeee, but over the years there’s been protests against nuclear, protests against fracking, protests against coal…we/Europe have started ramping down fossil fuel usage to save the environment (correctly) without alternative energy infrastructure in place. Leaders of countries like China, Russia etc don’t give a fuck about the environment, other countries consumer costs etc and will do what they want and now we’re all being screwed by gas producers. What did everyone expect ?

We live in a society where too many don’t want to accept that in life there is sometimes a need to pick the least worst option…like at 2am on a Saturday night for example
