Think about this ... Germany had the most advanced army in the world in 1939 .. Russians will fight to the death to protect their country .

It's a war best left alone

They wont just roll over, it's why the west always give them a wide birth and not countries like Iraq

You only have to look at Vietnam to understand technology doesn't win every war

I was listening to a fascinating talk on Nazi Germany’s war economy just yesterday. It’s an hour long, but well worth it. Long story short, it argues that Germany wasn’t anywhere near as advanced economically as its opponents.

It wasn't and it was doomed as soon as the US entered the war

Russia are unlikely to spunk the lives of 8 and a half million soldiers lives on this

Suspect China will now feel emboldened to steam into Taiwan.

This is far more of an issue/concern than Xi taking Russians side in a conflict he ultimately has no interest in. Our/the Wests reaction to this will probably determine Taiwans future

Ps thank god Germany sent an he Ukrainians 5000 helmets ! Let’s hope they’ve got some more balls when it comes to sanctions

The helmets thing is a bit of a Daily Mail-esq headline.

I agree they have been weak but Post war Germany was discouraged from developing any military power. It's a bit rich for the countries that imposed that to now complain they are not showing military muscle.

Germany is also Ukraine's biggest donor.

It’s us who need the balls when it comes to sanctions. Let’s see what happens. The government is very close to Russians who are considered security risks by British intelligence. Especially the PM who himself is considered a security risk by British intelligence because of his historical and current association with those oligarchs. That’s before you even go into how London is Russias laundry.

It’s also worth noting that the people of Germany are opposed to any military involvement preferring sanctions.

The Ukraine government are only asking for Military aid, sanctions and economic aid to rebuild post any conflict. They are not asking for any combat action from the West.

I fear this is only going one way now. Putin´s comments are extremely alarming. Thoughts with them all. I really hope this doesn´t escalate any more, but it seems like one man has lost the plot and is thirsty for trouble.

My football manager is from Ukraine and he has gone back to get his family out.
Make sure he only takes them to the next safe country and not where he has built a life for them already.

What does that have to do with anything unless you are heading down the frankly fucked up WW2 view of seeing all people from one country as the enemy

No it's an interesting point , how would the thousands of Russians living in Europe react to armies of the countries they live in fighting their own country

they'd do what most people would do and follow it on the news

There's also a lot of westerners who live in Russia

A war won't happen anyway david .. nato will back off as always so it's all hypothetical

Russia are more likely to back off. The Ukraine aren't asking for western/nato military intervention

The west will fuck the Russian economy

It was a bit tongue in cheek. They did however refuse to provide any military equipment to help Ukraine defend themselves potentially due to historical issues but also probably due to gas reliance (there was an interesting article in the times about Germany/Russian relationship in particular the gas supplies)

I agree with the other comments on here about us being strong with sanctions. I expect us to be freezing Russian assets especially if there’s any line of sight to the Kremlin.

Yeah, they can’t really ask for help from us militarily otherwise it would potentially turn into a nuclear conflict

What if a full invasion happens? Would we still not intervene on the basis of a nuclear threat?

All is well and good saying ‘but he won’t’, yet if he does he’s in a position to invade from 3 directions.
